Bears thinking of using Roquan Smith in preseason finale
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Chicago Bears linebacker Roquan Smith could be the exception to an unwritten NFL preseason rule.
The team's first-round draft pick could become one of the few key players who actually appear in Chicago's fifth and final preseason game Thursday against Buffalo.
Roquan Smith signs with Bears, and gets right to work
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Roquan Smith wore a smile on his face, and a Chicago Bears uniform for the first time since training camp started.
The Bears on Tuesday got a first look at their first-round round draft pick 30 days after he was supposed to report with rookies for camp. Both sides quickly sought to put the stalemate in the past.
"It's a great feeling just to be back out here with my teammates, getting back into rhythm," Smith said. "So it's an awesome feeling."

Unsigned Roquan Smith among issues facing Bears as camp ends
BOURBONNAIS, Ill. (AP) — It has become a familiar refrain for Chicago Bears coach Matt Nagy.
Nagy has often repeated the words "nothing new" over the past 3½ weeks regarding contract talks with first-round draft pick Roquan Smith, and the situation remains status quo.
Nagy's first training camp with the Bears concluded Sunday, and it remains uncertain when defensive coordinator Vic Fangio can plug the former Georgia linebacker into the lineup.
BOURBONNAIS, Ill. (AP) — When linebacker Danny Trevathan returned to practice Monday after recovering from a pulled hamstring, it left the Chicago Bears missing only one inside linebacker — first-round draft pick Roquan Smith.
When Smith will join the team is hard to say.
After the New York Jets reached a contract agreement Monday with quarterback Sam Darnold, Smith became the lone unsigned pick from the 2018 draft class.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Still no sign of Sam Darnold.
The No. 3 overall draft pick sat out of New York Jets camp for the second straight day in a contract impasse that has already lasted longer than most expected.
Darnold is expected to compete with Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater for the starting quarterback job once he's under contract. But he and Chicago linebacker Roquan Smith, the No. 8 choice, remain the only unsigned picks from the entire NFL draft.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — There was no sign of Sam Darnold as the New York Jets opened training camp.
The No. 3 overall draft pick officially became a contract holdout when the team began its first practice of the summer Friday without its prized rookie quarterback.
"He's not here," coach Todd Bowles said, "so I'm coaching the other (89) guys."
Darnold joins Chicago linebacker Roquan Smith, the No. 8 choice, as the only unsigned picks from the entire draft.
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Chicago Bears linebacker Roquan Smith appreciated the chance to display his speed on the field Friday at rookie minicamp.
At least for a while, it let him leave behind an unwanted distraction. A man was arrested Thursday for breaking into Smith's car at the University of Georgia and taking several items, including a Bears-issued iPad containing a playbook.

Chicago Bears turn to defense on final day of draft
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — While the Chicago Bears addressed one need at linebacker early in the NFL draft, their problem at outside pass rusher had to wait.
It waited until the sixth round on Saturday.
Bears general manager Ryan Pace turned largely to the defensive side in the final day with three selections, including sixth-round defensive end Kylie Fitts from Utah.
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Roquan Smith mentioned Dick Butkus and Mike Singletary, Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs. The Georgia standout hopes to add his name to the list of great Chicago linebackers.
The Bears drafted Smith with the No. 8 overall pick Thursday night, adding a potential cornerstone player on defense rather than another offensive weapon for quarterback Mitchell Trubisky.
Saints in NFL draft: Nick Underhill, Joel A. Erickson take control of war room in final mock draft
Most mock drafts are predictions. Not The Advocate's. Instead of taking a wild stab at what the Saints might do, Advocate writers Nick Underhill and Joel A. Erickson play the part of the top two decision-makers in New Orleans. A draft simulator at Fanspeak.com handles the other 31 teams, and when it's time for the Saints to pick, Underhill and Erickson talk it out and come to a selection to offer one look at what the team might be thinking when it's on the clock.
Former Georgia players show off for NFL coaches, scouts at 2018 Pro Day
While the NFL Scouting Combine brought college football’s top athletes to Indianapolis, the 2018 Georgia Pro Day brought the NFL’s top coaches and scouts to Athens Wednesday. Former Georgia linebacker Roquan Smith dealing with pressures of high NFL draft projections
At Georgia football’s pro day on Wednesday in Athens, Roquan Smith and other former Georgia linebackers participated in drills run by New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia.
Even working out under the direction of an NFL legend like Belichick, though, Smith was unfazed.
Georgia LB Roquan Smith delivers late in Rose Bowl comeback
PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Georgia linebacker Roquan Smith expected to make the Rose Bowl his home after originally committing to UCLA.
In his only game at the fabled stadium, Smith still made an impression by earning defensive player of the game honors in the Bulldogs' 54-48 double-overtime win over Oklahoma in the College Football Playoff semifinal.
Guerin Emig: Kenneth Murray must withstand Georgia run game for OU to win Rose Bowl
LOS ANGELES – With so much focus on how Roquan Smith does against Baker Mayfield, we’re forgetting another matchup critical to Monday’s Rose Bowl – how Kenneth Murray does against Nick Chubb.
How Murray, Oklahoma’s freshman middle linebacker, does against Georgia’ vaunted running game.
“I can guarantee you this,” OU linebackers coach Tim Kish said. “For a month we’ve been talking about how there’s no mystery to what’s going to happen Monday.”
While Mayfield ails, Bulldogs scheme to stop QB in Rose Bowl
LOS ANGELES (AP) — An illness has slowed down Baker Mayfield for the past few days, and Oklahoma's Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback has missed a handful of public events leading up to the Rose Bowl.
Georgia's defense is taking no comfort in Mayfield's condition.
"Oh, I'm sure he'll be in that game," said Roquan Smith, Georgia's star linebacker. "It's going to be big playing against him. I'm a big college football fan, and he's a winner. I've been hearing about him for a long time."
OU at the Rose Bowl: What did Georgia say about defending the Oklahoma offense?
LOS ANGELES – Georgia defensive coordinator Mel Tucker expects a much different challenge from Oklahoma than the program has faced during much of the regular season.
“Well, I think, for one, they have an outstanding quarterback. He's elite, and he really makes those guys go. You don't see quarterbacks like that every week, regardless of who you play,” Tucker said during a Friday news conference in downtown Los Angeles.
Georgia’s Smith relishes matchup with Sooners’ Mayfield
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — The award-winning leaders of Oklahoma's high-scoring offense and Georgia's shut-down defense will be in the spotlight in the Jan. 1 Rose Bowl.
That's just fine with Georgia's Butkus Award winning linebacker Roquan Smith, even though he says he'll need help in the marquee matchup with Oklahoma's Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Baker Mayfield.
Georgia, Auburn split top awards on AP All-SEC football team
ATLANTA (AP) — After meeting in the Southeastern Conference championship game, Georgia and Auburn split the top awards on The Associated Press All-Southeastern Conference team released Monday.
NORMAN — Sunday afternoon, not even an hour after the Oklahoma Sooners were announced as the No. 2 team in the country and slated for a Rose Bowl matchup against No. 3 Georgia, we were again talking about the 2014 Sugar Bowl.
That game, of course, was when the Sooners lit up Alabama in a 45-31 victory. And that’s also where many of the parallels we’ll likely keep talking about for the next few weeks begin.
ATLANTA — Kerryon Johnson spent a long moment on his knees on the still fresh Mercedes-Benz Stadium turf, while Roquan Smith ran the other way with the football he just fumbled as the Georgia sideline erupted.
Auburn’s star running back, Johnson gamely gave it his all after suffering a shoulder injury in last week’s Iron Bowl, but now he looked as crushed and crumpled as the recently imploded Georgia Dome next door.
No. 6 Georgia makes playoff bid, routs No. 4 Auburn 28-7
ATLANTA (AP) — Kirby Smart took the customary drenching with an ear-to-ear smile. He bounced up and down on the sideline with as much exuberance as his players. And when the coach waved his visor to the red-and-black faithful, he knew better than anyone how much this meant after a long, long wait.
AP All-America Watch: Championship weekend star matchups

The AP All-America team will be released Dec. 11.
Fitzpatrick, Chubb, Jewell among 5 Nagurski Trophy finalists
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Alabama defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick, Georgia linebacker Roquan Smith, Houston defensive tackle Ed Oliver, Iowa linebacker Josey Jewell and North Carolina State defensive end Bradley Chubb are the finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, given to the nation's top defensive player.
The finalists were named Wednesday. The winner will be announced Dec. 4 at the Charlotte Touchdown Club awards banquet.
SEC powers piling up wins, if not Heisman-worthy stats
The Southeastern Conference doesn't have any football players putting up video game-style numbers.
There's Jalen Hurts and Jake Fromm but no Baker Mayfield. Nick Chubb, Damien Harris and Kerryon Johnson, but no Bryce Love. And if that keeps up there probably won't be much Heisman Trophy love either.
No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Georgia are loaded with talented players, but the teams divvy carries with multiple tailbacks and don't put up huge passing numbers.
No. 15 Georgia outslugs No. 24 Notre Dame, 20-19
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Georgia got to Dawg Walk out of Notre Dame Stadium with a victory, dozens of its fans forming a line from the locker room to the buses to congratulate the Bulldogs after the program's first trip to this part of the country in more than 50 years.
Lorenzo Carter and Davin Bellamy led a swarming Georgia defense and the No. 15 Bulldogs got enough plays from an offense starting a freshman quarterback to beat No. 24 Notre Dame 20-19 on Saturday night.
Georgia says 2 players cleared in marijuana investigation
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Georgia's two leading tacklers will be able to play against No. 14 Florida after being cleared in a marijuana investigation.
The school announced Monday that inside linebackers Natrez Patrick and Roquan Smith violated no university policies that would require a suspension.
Athletic director Greg McGarity said the investigation "included drug testing, which was negative for both student-athletes."
