Manny the Masher, Manny the Miscreant & Macho Manny
BOSTON (AP) — Most players are questioned ahead of their World Series debuts. Manny Machado was cross-examined.
October's villain is especially despised at Fenway Park for planting his spikes into Dustin Pedroia in April 2017 . The Boston second baseman hasn't been the same.
"That's old history," Machado said Monday, deflector shields raised.
Braves’ Swanson, Dodgers’ Stripling off NLDS rosters
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Injured shortstop Dansby Swanson didn't make the Atlanta Braves' roster for the National League Division Series. His replacement is Charlie Culberson, someone familiar to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Braves announced their roster Thursday, hours before the start of Game 1.
Diamondbacks drop Dodgers to second in NL West with 7-2 win
PHOENIX (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers picked a bad time to have their first losing streak in two weeks.
Plagued by another night of missed opportunities and Ross Stripling's shaky start, the Dodgers lost 7-2 to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday night to fall to second place in the NL West.
Last-place Padres beat NL West-leading Dodgers 5-3
LOS ANGELES (AP) — With nothing left to play for, the San Diego Padres are in spoiler mode.
And it feels good.
Hunter Renfroe hit a two-run homer, Freddy Galvis added a solo shot and the last-place Padres beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3 on Friday night in front of a sellout crowd of 52,458.
"This is a crowd you don't play in front of every single night," third baseman Wil Myers said. "It was pretty cool to watch guys go out there and really compete."
Dodgers send right-handers Maeda and Stripling to bullpen
DENVER (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers are sending right-handers Kenta Maeda and Ross Stripling to the bullpen to make room for two starters about to return from the disabled list.
Left-hander Alex Wood is scheduled to come off the disabled list and pitch Tuesday against San Francisco. He went on the DL on Aug. 4 with adductor tendinitis. Lefty Hyun-Jin Ryu is healed from a strained groin that has sidelined him since early May. Ryu is expected to be activated and start on Wednesday.
Dodgers’ Ross Stripling reinstated from disabled list
DENVER (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers reinstated right-hander Ross Stripling from the 10-day disabled list and he will start Thursday night against the Colorado Rockies.
Stripling missed the last nine games with an inflamed right toe. The All-Star will be making his 17th start of the season. He has an 8-3 record with a 2.68 ERA.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Dodgers have placed All-Star right-hander Ross Stripling on the 10-day disabled list with right first toe inflammation.
Los Angeles announced the move Monday. The team also recalled left-hander Dylan Floro from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Boom or bust as homers, strikeouts dominate diamond
WASHINGTON (AP) — Boom or bust. This is what baseball has become — and that has owners worried.
"It's just kind of what it is: home runs and strikeouts," Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Ross Stripling said.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Chase Utley will retire from baseball at the end of this season, capping a 16-year career that included a World Series championship with Philadelphia and an elder-statesman role with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The six-time All-Star said he's leaving to spend more time with his wife and two young sons.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Ross Stripling got past the San Diego Padres despite not having his best stuff and now can look forward to his first All-Star Game.
And his defending NL champion Los Angeles Dodgers grabbed sole possession of first place in the NL West for the first time this season, by a half-game over the Arizona Diamondbacks, after beating San Diego 3-2 on Thursday night.
The Dodgers spent much of April and May in fourth place. They were tied for first on July 5, an off day.
CHICAGO (AP) — Cardinals pitcher Miles Mikolas was removed from the National League's active roster for the All-Star Game next Tuesday because he is scheduled to start Sunday for St. Louis against the Cincinnati Reds.
Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Ross Stripling was added to the NL pitching staff Wednesday as Mikolas' replacement.
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Ross Stripling has tentative plans to go to Lake Tahoe or somewhere close by in California during the All-Star break. He'll happily trade the lake for the sweltering July heat of Washington D.C.
Stripling (7-2) is making a strong case to make the NL All-Star team with another terrific outing, leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 3-1 win over the Angels on Saturday night.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Javier Baez put on a show for the Chicago Cubs and appeared to nail his audition for a high-profile role later this summer.
Baez hit two home runs, including a grand slam, Jon Lester won his sixth consecutive start and the Cubs ended a five-game losing streak with a 9-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — In his low-key way, Ross Stripling thinks of himself as "an unknown guy having a random good year."
Dodgers slugger Matt Kemp, third among National League outfielders in All-Star balloting, hopes he can take his 28-year-old teammate with him to the Midsummer Classic.
"He needs to be in there," Kemp said. "That boy is pitching his butt off. He's been a big part of our success."
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ross Stripling is surprising even himself with the way he's piling up strikeouts lately.
The right-hander had nine more Wednesday night to increase his total to 28 over his last three starts, Matt Kemp homered and drove in four runs, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-2.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Matt Kemp didn't waste any time jumping on his old team.
He slugged a three-run homer in the first inning, Enrique Hernandez added a solo shot in the third and the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the San Diego Padres 4-1 on Friday night in a matchup of the two worst teams in the NL West.
MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) — Walker Buehler and two relievers have combined for eight hitless innings for the Los Angeles Dodgers in a neutral-site game against the San Diego Padres.
Buehler pitched six hitless innings Friday night in his third major league start. The touted rookie right-hander struck out eight and walked three over 93 pitches before handing off to left-hander Tony Cingrani, who walked two in the seventh but kept the no-no intact. Yimi Garcia struck out two in a perfect eighth.
Teams find it hard to rebound from tough Series losses
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dodgers reliever Ross Stripling was confident as the World Series headed back to California.
"If we can just hold them to less than 12 runs, we'll get some wins," he said playfully.
Los Angeles players seemed dazed after Sunday night's 13-12, 10-inning loss to the Astros, which gave Houston a 3-2 Series lead.
Astros felt ecstatic and energized, Dodgers drained and dispirited after 5 hours, 17 minutes that resembled Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots transferred from a ring to a diamond.
Dodgers keep Baez on playoff roster; D-backs make 2 changes
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dodgers relievers Pedro Baez and Ross Stripling are on Los Angeles' roster for the NL Division Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Slumping outfielder Joc Pederson and utilityman Tim Locastro didn't make the squad announced by manager Dave Roberts on Friday before Game 1 in Los Angeles.
CLEVELAND (AP) — Lonnie Chisenhall usually senses when Indians manager Terry Francona is going to call on him as a pinch-hitter.
That moment came earlier than normal for Chisenhall on Thursday, and he was ready.
Chisenhall connected for a three-run, pinch-hit homer in the fifth inning and had five RBIs as Cleveland salvaged the finale of a three-game series by beating Los Angeles 12-5 and stopping the Dodgers' six-game winning streak.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — This one had a little bit of everything: Alex Wood extending his scoreless streak, balls leaving the yard and players clearing the benches.
When it was all over, the Los Angeles Dodgers had navigated a 7-2 victory over the Miami Marlins on Friday night, though three were no longer around to witness the final out.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Austin Barnes and pitcher Ross Stripling were the only options manager Dave Roberts had left on the Los Angeles Dodgers bench.
Believe it or not, Roberts had planned it that way.
Pinch hitter Barnes doubled with one out in the 10th inning, scoring pinch runner Stripling to lift the Dodgers over the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 on Tuesday night.
Dodgers place Hill on 10-day DL with blister on hand
DENVER (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Rich Hill was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a blister on the middle finger of his pitching hand.
The 37-year-old left-hander spent more than a month on the DL last season while dealing with blisters on his fingers.
