No. 11 North Carolina beats No. 10 Virginia Tech 103-82
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina went from being unable to hit a 3-pointer to seemingly unable to miss. And its touted freshmen rolled to big nights against a highly ranked Atlantic Coast Conference opponent.
This is more what coach Roy Williams envisioned — or hoped for, anyway — from his 11th-ranked Tar Heels.
UNC’s Williams: Manley to miss 6th straight game at Miami
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina coach Roy Williams says sophomore big man Sterling Manley will miss his sixth straight game at Miami on Saturday due to lingering knee soreness.

Little, No. 13 North Carolina hold off Notre Dame 75-69
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Once Nassir Little got rolling, No. 13 North Carolina didn't have to worry much about yet another home loss.
Little scored all 11 of his points in the final 11 minutes, and the Tar Heels beat Notre Dame 75-69 on Tuesday night.
"It was just a matter of time," Little said. "Everybody was just waiting for me to do what I do, to help the team be as good as we can be."
Louisville hands No. 12 UNC worst home loss under Williams
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Louisville went from suffering a confidence-jarring loss against a long-struggling Atlantic Coast Conference program to handing Roy Williams his worst home loss in 16 seasons with North Carolina.
Tough to explain? Even the Hall of Famer had a hard time with that.
"We never really got into the game," Williams said after Saturday's 83-62 defeat to the Cardinals. "I'd like to give you a brilliant answer as to why, but I can't give you that brilliant answer."
UNC’s Williams: Manley won’t play at Pittsburgh
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina coach Roy Williams says sophomore big man Sterling Manley will miss his second straight game when the Tar Heels play at Pittsburgh.
Manley sat out of Wednesday's home win against Harvard due to soreness in his left knee. At the time, the school said it was unclear when he would return and he was still being evaluated.
Tar Heels surge past Harvard in second half
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina got ready for Atlantic Coast Conference play with a lackluster performance against Harvard.
Luke Maye scored 14 points to help the 15th-ranked Tar Heels beat the Crimson 77-57 on Wednesday night.
Cameron Johnson and Coby White added 13 points apiece in North Carolina's final nonconference game of the regular season.
"This stuff is over now," coach Roy Williams said. "It's big-time basketball in front of us now. We've got to play better."

Asked if he could see himself coaching to 2028, Williams quipped Thursday: "Somebody sees me doing that, I don't know who, but somebody does."

No. 12 North Carolina beats No. 4 Gonzaga 103-90
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina made shot after shot, finally backing its Hall of Fame coach's claim that he has a sharp-shooting bunch. And when they did miss, the Tar Heels relentlessly flew to the rim to pursue the ball for another chance.
Saving all that for a highly ranked opponent in a marquee nonconference game will only help with confidence, too.
The Latest: Coach OK with players signing anti-statue letter
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — The Latest on a meeting by a North Carolina statewide university board to consider the fate of a toppled Confederate statue (all times local):
University of North Carolina's basketball coach says he's OK with several of his players signing a letter opposing the return of a Confederate statue to campus.
No. 12 UNC seeking defensive fixes entering Gonzaga game
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina can score the basketball. Roy Williams just needs the 12th ranked Tar Heels to do a better job of keeping opponents from doing the same.
They can't afford any defensive lapses — whether it's struggling to handle a screen or pressure a ballhandler — with fourth-ranked Gonzaga coming to Chapel Hill on Saturday night.
No. 14 North Carolina beats UNC Wilmington 97-69
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina gave its Hall of Fame coach what he wanted in a dominant second half against an in-state opponent.
The 14th-ranked Tar Heels need it to be the first step during an important month that could give them the chance to sharpen their imperfect play.
Cameron Johnson scored 21 points to help the Tar Heels beat UNC Wilmington 97-69 on Wednesday night, turning a close game into a rout by doing the very things coach Roy Williams has been pushing them to do.
No. 7 Michigan rolls past No. 11 North Carolina 84-67
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — After 40 minutes of poised offense and smothering defense by Michigan, North Carolina coach Roy Williams was at the end of his wits.

Correction: T25-North Carolina-Wofford story
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — In a story Nov. 6 about a basketball game between No. 8 North Carolina and Wofford, The Associated Press misspelled the last name of a Wofford player. He is Fletcher Magee, not Fletcher McGee.
A corrected version of the story is below:
Maye, Johnson lead No. 8 North Carolina past Wofford 78-67
Luke Maye scores 24 points as No. 8 North Carolina defeats Wofford 78-67
Johnson, Little lead No. 8 North Carolina past Elon, 116-67
ELON, N.C. (AP) — No. 8 North Carolina opened an in-state neighbor's arena by putting up some numbers that will be tough for other teams to surpass.
The Tar Heels routed Elon 116-67 on Friday night behind 21 points apiece from Cameron Johnson and freshman Nassir Little.
No. 8 Tar Heels must find answer at point with Berry gone
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina's Roy Williams likes to joke that he doesn't ask much of his point guards at the helm of the Tar Heels' fast-paced attack.
"Don't turn the sucker over and stay in front of the ball," the Hall of Fame coach said. "If you can do those, I can work with you."
Yet Williams opens the season with more uncertainty at the point than he's faced in years.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — C.B. McGrath paced the court Wednesday, watching his UNC Wilmington team get up shots and sprint through transition drills like seemingly any other preseason practice.

Elon announced Monday that the Tar Heels will visit the Phoenix on Nov. 9 in its first regular-season game in the 5,100-seat Schar Center. The campuses are separated by about 40 miles, but this will mark UNC's first visit to Elon since December 1950.
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Not all too long ago, Jay Wright was still one of those many standout coaches without a national championship despite repeated winning seasons and appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
Less than two years and a Texas two-step of titles later, the sharp-dressed Villanova coach is now in very select company.
San Antonio – Michigan's run in the NCAA Tournament came one win short of the program's second national title as Villanova beat the Wolverines, 79-62, at the Alamodome on Monday night.
The Wildcats have now won two of the last three national titles and coach Jay Wright joins Mike Krzyzewski and Roy Williams as the only active coaches with multiple championships.
Tar Heels look to future without mainstays Berry, Pinson
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Joel Berry II and Theo Pinson led the way as North Carolina won Atlantic Coast Conference titles, reached two Final Fours and claimed a national championship.
Now they've played their final games, and the Tar Heels have massive holes to fill: Berry's competitiveness at the point, Pinson's knack for playmaking and the duo's role as UNC's seen-it-all leaders.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Texas A&M had its big men relentlessly snatching down loose rebounds, its wing players knocking down shots and an entire roster full of guys playing with aggressive confidence.
Stunningly, reigning national champion North Carolina found no match for any of it.
And just as shockingly, the Tar Heels are heading home with the most-lopsided NCAA Tournament loss of Roy Williams' Hall of Fame career.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina coach Roy Williams hammers his team so much about rebounding that he has frequently quipped about the existence of an 11th commandment: thou shalt box out.
"I think it's the most critical factor in the game, the way we play," Williams said.
NEW YORK (AP) — North Carolina was up 16 with 5 1/2 minutes left, all set to cruise to a victory that would snap a six-game Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament losing streak against Duke and put the Tar Heels in the championship for a record 35th time.
Then things got weird — and college basketball's greatest rivalry produced another memorable finish.
No. 14 North Carolina tops Louisville 93-76
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — North Carolina got the fast start it sought against Louisville and the No. 14 Tar Heels displayed that energy in numerous areas, giving coach Roy Williams a lot to like — for the most part.
Joel Berry scored 23 points, Luke Maye had 19 with 13 rebounds and North Carolina dominated the boards and second-chance points to beat the Cardinals 93-76 Saturday night for its fifth consecutive victory.
North Carolina's latest accomplishment leaves little time for celebration.
The No. 21 Tar Heels, who are fresh off defeating Duke, are back in action for Saturday afternoon's game against North Carolina State at sold-out PNC Arena (2 p.m., Fox 50, Mix 101.5 FM).
This one is bound to have an emotional edge as well.
N.C. State (16-8, 6-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) is aiming for its first regular-season series sweep of the Tar Heels in 15 years.
