Michigan man charged with killing 73-year-old father
ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) — A 31-year-old Detroit-area man has been charged with killing his father, who was found dead with his hands and legs bound.
Dane Matthew Steward of Royal Oak appeared in court Monday on a first-degree murder charge and was ordered held without bond.
Police say they found 73-year-old Dennis Steward's body Thursday inside the home the two men shared. An autopsy determined he died from strangulation and had likely been dead for more than a day. His car was missing.

River otter moved to Detroit Zoo after rescue in Alaska
ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) — An orphaned North American female river otter found by hikers in southeastern Alaska has been moved to the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak.
The Detroit Zoological Society says 7-month-old Kalee is a potential mate for Sparky, a 4-year-old male otter born at the zoo.
Kalee had suffered a laceration and puncture wound to her side when she was discovered in June. Alaska Fish and Game officials turned her over to a zoo there for initial care.
Detroit Zoo opens new habitat for red pandas, rope bridge
ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Zoo has opened a new habitat for red pandas.
The Holtzman Wildlife Foundation Red Panda Forest made its debut this month at the zoo in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak. It's designed to provide a larger and more stimulating naturalistic environment for the pandas. And it seeks to help teach people more about the animals.
Officials: Newborn polar bear cub dies at Detroit Zoo
ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) — A newborn polar bear cub has died at the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak.
The cub was born Wednesday and moved to the zoo's intensive-care nursery on Thursday after video surveillance showed she had stopped nursing.
Officials say staff worked in shifts to provide fluids, antibiotics and infusions of polar bear blood plasma.
Lawsuit seeks millions in death of young man by police
ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) — The family of a young man who was fatally shot by police in suburban Detroit has filed a lawsuit seeking $10 million, alleging his civil rights were violated when he was shot in the back.
The lawsuit was filed Monday in federal court. Cody Reynolds' mother is accusing Royal Oak police of using excessive force in May.
$5 million gift to help create new Detroit-area heart center
ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) — A $5 million gift from a suburban Detroit couple will help create a new heart center at Beaumont Hospital .
The money from Orchard Lake residents Max and Debra Ernst will go to the $9 million Max and Debra Ernst Heart Center at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. Max Ernst is a former Arbor Drugs executive. The center will be dedicated to consolidating cardiac care, particularly for patients with heart failure.
Democrats will control Oakland County Board of Commissioners
PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) — For the first time in decades, Democrats are in the majority on the Board of Commissioners in Michigan's second-largest county.
Voters in Oakland County chose four Democrats in districts that usually go Republican. Democrats now will have a one-seat majority.

The Detroit Zoological Society says 25 dusky gopher frogs were moved this month to the Ward Bayou Wildlife Management Area in southern Mississippi.

Michigan law firm gets rich by suing cities over sewers
DETROIT (AP) — A single law firm based in Royal Oak has won tens of millions of dollars in lawsuits against a growing list of metro Detroit communities — including Detroit, Royal Oak, Ferndale, Birmingham, and the townships of Bloomfield, Waterford and Brighton.
More cases are pending against St. Clair Shores, Taylor, and most recently Harper Woods. The firm did lose a notable case against Westland and appealed another loss to Dearborn.
Halloween arrives early for inhabitants of Detroit Zoo
ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) — Halloween has arrived ahead of schedule at the Detroit Zoo, where inhabitants are enjoying some frightfully good fare.
Animal care staff at the zoo in suburban Royal Oak on Wednesday provided special seasonal munchies to anteaters, great apes, grizzly bears, penguins and vultures, among others.

Royal Oak hospital receives national nursing designation

Jury awards family $130 million in medical malpractice case

5 flamingo chicks born in recent weeks at Detroit Zoo

Zoo officials say five flamingo chicks have hatched in recent weeks. They're being guarded by their parents in the African bird habitat, not far from great apes.
The zoo's chief life sciences officer, Scott Carter, says it's a wonderful opportunity for visitors to see chicks getting plenty of attention from their parents. He says they'll grow into tall, pink flamingos.
Detroit Zoo opens new habitat for Japanese giant salamanders

The former Rainforest Immersion Gallery at the zoo's National Amphibian Conservation Center has been transformed into a space to provide the aquatic amphibians with a habitat twice the size of their previous dwelling.
Beaumont Hospital to pay $84M to resolve overpay charges
ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) — A Detroit-area hospital will pay $84.5 million to settle U.S. Justice Department allegations over improper pay to eight doctors.
The department said Thursday the settlement resolves allegations that Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak overpaid the doctors and provided them with free or below-market office space and other incentives so they would refer more patients to Beaumont. The allegations occurred between 2004 and 2012.
ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) — A prosecutor says the fatal shooting of a man by a suburban Detroit officer after police say he sped away from a traffic stop was justified.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Zoo says a female chimpanzee named after primatologist Jane Goodall has been born there on the first World Chimpanzee Day.
It says the baby named Jane arrived early Saturday on the anniversary of the date in 1960 that Goodall first traveled to what's now Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania to study the social interactions of wild chimpanzees.
ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) — Visitors to the Detroit Zoo can learn about snake conservation as part of World Snake Day.
The Detroit Zoological Society will hold events from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday at the Holden Reptile Conservation Center.

The renovated 20,000-square-foot (1,858-square meter) habitat aims to provide a more "naturalistic" experience for the bear brothers Mike, Thor and Boo. Police: Officer fatally shoots man who fled traffic stop
ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say a suburban Detroit police officer has fatally shot a man who sped away from a traffic stop.
Royal Oak police say the officer pulled over a car Tuesday evening for a traffic violation, but the driver, 27-year-old Antonino Thomas Gordon of Commerce Township, fled and was spotted later in a fast food restaurant drive-thru lane. Police say the officer shot Gordon after he tried to flee again, and the injured suspect's car collided with a van.
A driver was fatally shot by police after he fled a traffic stop Tuesday in Royal Oak, authorities said.
An officer tried to pull over the motorist around 6:10 p.m. near 13 Mile and Woodward but the man did not stop, investigators said in a statement.
The same officer soon spotted him about a block away, at a White Castle drive-through near Coolidge, according to the release.

Zoo offering visitors buckets of ‘Detroit Zoo Poo’
ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) — Some visitors to the Detroit Zoo will soon be able to add animal droppings to their souvenir list.
Free buckets of 5 pounds (2.3 kilograms) of animal manure, dubbed Detroit Zoo Poo, will be handed out on April 14 as part of the zoo's GreenFest celebration. The event precedes Earth Day and will showcase how the zoo recycles waste.
Buckets will be available to the first 1,000 visitors to the zoo's anaerobic digester educational display.

Displaced bats, sloth to find new homes at the Detroit Zoo
ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) — Bats, squirrels and a sloth displaced by the closure of a live animal center will find new homes at the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak.
The Detroit Zoological Society says it is providing sanctuary for the 54 bats, five southern flying squirrels, a 2-toed sloth and a horned frog.
The zoological society says more than 200 animals need homes after this week's closure of the animal center in Pontiac, northwest of Detroit.
One week after falling in the Catholic League A-B tournament semifinal, ending a four-game winning streak, Farmington Hills Mercy girls basketball ended its regular season on a high note, defeating visiting Royal Oak Shrine on Wednesday night, 44-31.
