MARSEILLE, France (AP) — Eighth-seeded Serb Filip Krajinovic and ninth-seeded Russian Karen Khachanov advanced to the second round of the Open 13 on Tuesday.
Krajinovic rallied to beat Joao Sousa of Portugal 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 — with both players hitting six aces and dropping serve three times— while Khachanov had 15 aces in a 6-3, 7-6 (2) win against Ruben Bemelmans of Belgium.
Federer begins bid for No. 1 spot with easy win
ROTTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) — At the age of 36, Roger Federer is now two wins away from reclaiming the top ranking for the first time in six years.
Federer began his campaign at the ABN AMRO tournament on Wednesday with a flawless performance, defeating Ruben Bemelmans 6-1, 6-2 in just 46 minutes.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion was in complete control against the Belgian qualifier. The Swiss hit six aces, dropped only four points on his serve, and broke Bemelmans four times in the first round.
Gasquet advances to Open Sud de France quarterfinals
MONTPELLIER, France (AP) — Fifth-seeded Richard Gasquet won a hard-fought all-French match against Pierre-Hugues Herbert on Thursday to reach the Open Sud de France quarterfinals.
Gasquet, who played against his Davis Cup teammate for the first time on the main tour, prevailed 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-3 in more than two hours at the indoor tournament.
"The court is very fast, and he served very well," Gasquet said after facing 14 aces from his rival.
Haase beats Kavcic in 1st round of Maharashtra Open
PUNE, India (AP) — Fifth-seeded Robin Haase started the new year with a 7-6 (6), 7-5 victory over Blaz Kavcic in the first round of the Maharashtra Open on Tuesday.
Kavcic broke the serve of 42nd-ranked Haase three times, but the Dutchman eventually came through to line up a match against Chile's Nicolas Jarry.
Brazilian qualifier Thiago Monteiro was on court for 2 hours, 40 minutes before beating Ruben Bemelmans 6-7 (4), 6-3, 7-6 (8).
France wins doubles to lead Belgium 2-1 in Davis Cup final
LILLE, France (AP) — Yannick Noah took a big gamble in the Davis Cup final and it paid off.
When the France captain fielded an inexperienced pair for the doubles, many were perplexed. He was rewarded by a victory that put France one point away from a 10th Davis Cup title.
"It was a tough decision," Noah said after Richard Gasquet and Pierre-Hugues Herbert, who had never played together before, defeated Ruben Bemelmans and Joris De Loore 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4 on Saturday.

LILLE, France (AP) — Two-time Grand Slam champions Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert beat Filip Krajinovic and Nenad Zimonjic 6-1, 6-2, 7-6 (3) for France to lead Serbia 2-1 in the Davis Cup semifinals on Saturday.
Apart from a scare in the third set when the Serb pair won four games in a row, Mahut and Herbert were in control on the indoor clay court and put France one win away from its 18th Davis Cup final.
LONDON (AP) — Daniil Medvedev threw a handful coins in the direction of chair umpire Mariana Alves after his second-round loss at Wimbledon on Wednesday.
The 49th-ranked Russian repeatedly apologized during his post-match news conference, saying that he was not trying to imply that Alves was biased.
"I was just disappointed and (did) a stupid thing," said Medvedev, who earned headlines for a decidedly different reason Monday, beating three-time major champion Stan Wawrinka in the first round.
CHARLEROI, Belgium (AP) — Italy staved off losing to Belgium in the Davis Cup quarterfinals by winning the doubles on Saturday.
Simone Bolelli and Andreas Seppi defeated Ruben Bemelmans and Jons De Loore 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (6) in nearly four hours.
Belgium won both singles on Friday, and can clinch the tie on Sunday in the first reverse singles, when David Goffin plays Paolo Lorenzi. Goffin won their only previous match in 2014.
Darcis faces Lorenzi in opening singles in Davis Cup
CHARLEROI, Belgium (AP) — Steve Darcis will face Paolo Lorenzi in Friday's opening singles match when Belgium hosts Italy in the Davis Cup quarterfinals.
Darcis will be going for his 21st win in Davis Cup singles when play gets underway on indoor hard courts at the Spiroudome de Charleroi. But Lorenzi beat him in their only previous meeting, on a similar surface two years ago in Metz.

With the tie already decided, Ruben Bemelmans beat Mischa Zverev 7-5, 6-1, giving Belgium a 4-1 upset victory — its first over Germany at the ninth attempt in the Davis Cup.
German brothers lose as Belgium leads 2-1 in Davis Cup
FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Ruben Bemelmans and Joris De Loore defeated German brothers Mischa Zverev and Alexander Zverev 6-3, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 4-6, 6-3 to give Belgium a 2-1 lead in their Davis Cup first-round match on Saturday.
The first brothers to play together for Germany in the competition saved 15 of the 18 break points they faced but were unable to prevent Bemelmans and De Loore winning in 3 hours, 13 minutes.

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Belgium's Steve Darcis edged Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-4, 3-6, 2-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5) before Alexander Zverev struck back to pull Germany level 1-1 in in their Davis Cup first-round tie on Friday.
Zverev fired 17 aces in defeating debutant Arthur De Greef 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 to ensure the tie will be decided in Sunday's reverse singles after Saturday's doubles.
