After late firing of GM, Suns look to begin winning, finally
PHOENIX (AP) — This is supposed to be the year that the Phoenix Suns finally start to win again.
General manager Ryan McDonough had said the goal was to be the most improved team in the NBA. If that happens, it will be without McDonough.
Owner Robert Sarver fired the general manager nine days before the Suns' season opener.
"For me, the switch has flipped and it's now time to start figuring out how to win," Sarver said in an interview on 98.7 Arizona Sports the day of the firing.
Suns get Anderson, send Knight, Chriss to Rockets
PHOENIX (AP) — The Phoenix Suns have completed a four-player trade that sends guard Brandon Knight and forward Marquese Chriss to the Houston Rockets for forward Ryan Anderson and guard De'Anthony Melton.
Knight had been considered in line to start at point guard for the Suns after missing last season while recovering from knee surgery but now will see time as a backup to Chris Paul for what is expected to be an NBA contender in Houston.
AP Source: Deal close on 4-player trade with Suns, Rockets
PHOENIX (AP) — A person with knowledge of the situation says Phoenix and Houston are close to finalizing a trade that would send forward Ryan Anderson to the Suns and point guard Brandon Knight to the Rockets.
Phoenix also would send former first-round pick forward Marquese Chriss to Houston and the Suns would get guard De'Anthony Melton from the Rockets.
The person asked for anonymity Thursday night because the deal had not been completed.
We might as well start calling them the Washington Crimsonskins.
The Redskins drafted linebacker Shaun Dion Hamilton in the sixth round of the NFL draft Saturday, and get this Hamilton went to Alabama.
Entering his second year, linebacker Ryan Anderson apparently got in better shape. The 2017 second-round pick hardly saw the field last season, buried in the depth chart behind the Redskins' other pass rushers.
Next up is the spring game for Wake Forest’s football team, rain or shine or anything else.

LeBron James' media platform Uninterrupted has sent a letter to the University of Alabama athletic department calling a planned video seriescopyright and intellectual propertyinfringement.
Justin Herron and Phil Haynes were both headed for ice baths at the end of Wake Forest’s football practice on Tuesday, which sounds strange given they were outside in 40-degree weather with winds whipping around for much of the day.
Trent Murphy, Niles Paul highlight Redskins exits in Day 3 of free agency
The Alex Smith trade became official Wednesday, but the departures for the Redskins' own free agents continued.

Harden scores 34 as Rockets beat Wolves 126-108
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Whenever the Minnesota Timberwolves threatened, the Houston Rockets had an answer.
It usually came from long range.
The Rockets hit 10 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 126-108 victory on Tuesday night, extending their winning streak to nine.
"I knew we were making our shots, but that fourth quarter, that's what we're capable of," said Rockets guard James Harden. "I think it was a four-point game and we went on a 12-0. That's how fast it was."

"Tonight was my night," Ariza said with a grin. "If those guys are out, call on me. I get it, rightfully."
Harden has 31, Rockets win again in NY, 119-97 over Knicks
NEW YORK (AP) — The struggles stopped for the Houston Rockets once they got to New York.

Harden had 31 points and nine assists, and the Rockets had their 3-pointers falling again in a 119-97 victory over the Knicks on Wednesday night.
Harden’s triple-double lifts Rockets past Hornets 109-93
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Houston Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni seemed genuinely disappointed his team only attempted 55 3-pointers against the Charlotte Hornets.
"I don't know why we didn't shoot 60," D'Antoni quipped. "We passed up about four."
James Harden had his first triple-double of the season with 27 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds, and the Rockets finished 22 of 57 from beyond the 3-point arc in a 109-93 win Friday night.
Eric Gordon hits 3 at the buzzer to lift Rockets past 76ers
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Eric Gordon and Ryan Anderson kept an eye on the TV in the Houston locker room, which was appropriately showing the World Series.
"Justin Verlander is a neighbor of mine," Anderson said. "He's obviously a clutch guy. The city is lucky to have him."
The Rockets' own Mr. October was pretty clutch in the NBA's version of the bottom of the ninth.
Wake Forest’s offense has had 40 possessions in the past three games combined that didn’t end in a kneel-down. Twenty-six of them have lasted less than two minutes and 18 of those have been three-and-outs.
Newcomers turn Redskins defense into a force early in season
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — When the Washington Redskins turned over almost half their starting defense from last season, coach Jay Gruden didn't know how it would go.
"You're never quite sure until they get here," Gruden said.
The Redskins' defensive newcomers are here, and so far they're spectacular.
Sweet Home Alabama: Redskins’ Allen, Anderson quick learners
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — When Jay Gruden watches college football, it's no surprise the program that has won four of the past eight national titles sticks out.
"You watch other defenses, no disrespect, and then you flip on an Alabama game, it's different," Gruden said.
New Redskins defensive coordinator Greg Manusky tells his players he doesn't have a crystal ball to always know the right play to call, yet before stepping on the field they have an idea what to expect.
"A lot of pressure," linebacker Ryan Kerrigan said. "You look at the install sheets for when we're installing our defense, you see a lot of lines going forward."
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — Alabama teammates Jonathan Allen and Ryan Anderson have signed their rookie contracts with the Washington Redskins, who have deals with nine of their 10 draft picks.
The only player Washington drafted but has not signed yet is third-round selection Fabian Moreau, a cornerback from UCLA.
The Redskins announced agreements Thursday with first-rounder Allen, a defensive lineman taken 17th overall, and second-rounder Anderson, a linebacker.
With a little more than eight minutes remaining in Friday night's game and the Spurs clutching a four-point lead, Rockets guard Pat Beverley had a squeaky clean look at the basket to the right of the top of the key.
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — The Washington Redskins hope to have found short- and long-term upgrades to their 28th-ranked defense on the second day of the NFL draft.
Washington went back to the Alabama well Friday night to take outside linebacker Ryan Anderson in the second round at pick No. 49 and selected injured UCLA cornerback Fabian Moreau in the third round with the 81st pick. Rockets report: Ryan Anderson leads charge on boards with 12 rebounds
One of the Thunder's advantages over the Rockets before their first-round playoff series began was supposed to be size and rebounding.
Ryan Anderson good-naturedly shoved aside Rockets teammate Pat Beverley during a loosening drill Friday on the Toyota Center court, primarily because of Beverley moving a little slow and grooving a little too much in front of Anderson.
Ryan Anderson's voice echoed in his corner of the Toyota Center practice court as he raved about everything from the Houston weather to his tutelage of rookie Troy Williams on the art of the high-flying tip-dunk.
Rookie Troy Williams started because three of the Rockets' usual starters were out Sunday, but he started again Wednesday night even with James Harden and Trevor Ariza back.
CHICAGO (AP) — Although the Houston Rockets put up big offensive numbers in the second and third quarters, their work on the defensive end dominated the discussion in the postgame locker room.
"We just locked it in," James Harden said. "We stuck to our principles. We knew if we gang rebounded and got out in transition, we had a chance."

INDIANAPOLIS — The Patriots’ good karma is carrying into their draft preparation.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — When the Houston Rockets get going the way they did Wednesday night, all those 3-pointers become a blur.
James Harden scored 26 points and the Rockets hit 20 of their first 39 attempts from beyond the arc in a 122-103 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.
Houston opened a 31-point lead early in the fourth quarter, so it didn't even matter that the Rockets missed their last 13 tries from 3-point range.
Anderson, Gordon lead Rockets past Kings, 105-83
HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Rockets could not have been happier to be home.

BOSTON (AP) — In a midseason matchup of MVP contenders, the loudest chants at TD Garden were for the little guy carrying the Celtics.

Now, it’s Alabama that wants to pull a Clemson
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Bo Scarbrough and Ryan Anderson sat side by side in Alabama's somber, mostly silent locker room, their shoulders hunched over.
Anderson stared glumly at his phone. Scarbrough kept his head down. There was nothing to say.
Both the tailback Scarbrough and senior linebacker Anderson delivered big games in Alabama's 35-31 last-second fall to Clemson. They had wanted a celebration. Instead, they got an unfamiliar feeling: loss.
Rockets extend streak to 7 with 100-93 win over Magic
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The Houston Rockets are edging toward elite status in the Western Conference, and learning that the climb comes with challenges.

Houston escaped against Oklahoma City with a two-point win at home Thursday night after leading by 18 in the second half.
Peach Bowl was a typical day for ’Bama’s high-scoring D
ATLANTA (AP) — Ryan Anderson no longer holds the unhappy distinction as probably the best Alabama defender without a touchdown.
The top-ranked Crimson Tide linebacker took care of that with a 26-yard interception return late in the first half of Saturday's 24-7 Peach Bowl defensive throttling of No. 4 Washington. With a spin move and a short sprint, he joined that not-so-exclusive club.
Alabama wears down Washington 24-7, returns to title game
ATLANTA (AP) — For Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide, it would be unimaginable to end a season any other way.
Once again, they'll be playing for a national title.
Going old school on playoff newcomer Washington, top-ranked Alabama relied on a stifling defense and the bruising runs of Bo Scarbrough to wear down the Huskies for a 24-7 victory Saturday in the Peach Bowl semifinal game.
A ‘hot’ Scarbrough could be Alabama’s next star running back
ATLANTA (AP) — Bo Scarbrough broke tackles, juked defenders and headed to the end zone.
Then No. 1 Alabama's backup — yes, backup — tailback did it again. The 6-foot-2, 228-pound Scarbrough flashed power and moves on both his 18-yard touchdown run early and his 68-yarder in the fourth quarter that all but iced the Crimson Tide's 24-7 victory over No. 4 Washington Saturday in the Peach Bowl and helped launch the team to another national championship game.
