NC State beats UNC 34-28 in OT on Gallaspy’s 5th TD
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State kept giving the ball to Reggie Gallaspy II, and he kept carrying it into the end zone. It added up to a historic day for the senior — and yet another victory over the Wolfpack's fiercest rival.
Gallaspy ran 1 yard in overtime for a touchdown, his school-record-tying fifth TD, and North Carolina State beat North Carolina 34-28 on Saturday in a rivalry game marred by a fight in the end zone after it ended.

No. 22 NC State hosts Wake, determined to make up for ’17
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Dave Doeren doesn't necessarily need to remind his North Carolina State players of the way they fumbled away last year's loss at Wake Forest.
"Probably not," Doeren quipped, "but I will."
The 22nd-ranked Wolfpack play host to the Demon Deacons on Thursday night with fresh memories of that miscue-marked loss in the last meeting of their instate rivalry.

WHAT'S AT STAKE?
North Carolina State will try to rebound after suffering its first loss of the season at No. 2 Clemson as the Tigers turned back their biggest challenge in the ACC's Atlantic Division. Syracuse, which is unbeaten at home, can tie the Wolfpack in the division with a win. The winner becomes eligible for a bowl game.
Dabo Swinney, Ryan Finley among ACC’s first-half winners
ATLANTA (AP) — This has not been a run-of-the-mill first half of the season for the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Sure, No. 3 Clemson looks as strong as ever, but who saw a change coming at quarterback while the Tigers were undefeated? That's only one of the ACC's surprises that set the pace for some unlikely highlights and low points midway through the season.
No. 23 NC State holds off Boston College 28-23 to reach 5-0
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State went from dominating Boston College on both sides of the ball to frittering just about everything away — first momentum, then nearly all of a big second-half lead — in a suddenly close finish.

Meyers helps NC State beat James Madison 24-13 in opener
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Jakobi Meyers has offered North Carolina State quarterback Ryan Finley a simple suggestion when it comes to throwing his way.
"He says just put it in his area code," Finley said.

Trio of big wideouts give Wolfpack potential pass-game punch
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — From the day Dave Doeren took over at North Carolina State, he knew he needed to find and develop bigger receivers.
Now entering Doeren's sixth season, the Wolfpack's top receivers are all big-bodied targets with the ability to make contested catches. And with an NFL prospect in quarterback Ryan Finley, it's easy to see why there's so much optimism in Raleigh about the team's potential to move the ball through the air.
NC State backup QB McClendon to transfer after graduation
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State redshirt senior quarterback Jalan McClendon will play elsewhere next season as a graduate transfer.
The school announced McClendon's decision Monday. He is scheduled to graduate in May and has a year of eligibility remaining.
North Carolina State quarterback Ryan Finley will return for his final year of eligibility with the Wolfpack.
N.C. State announced the news Saturday afternoon.
Finley, who earned his undergraduate degree in 2016 and is working on a master's degree, will enter his final campaign ranked fifth in school history in career passing yards with 6,577 after just two seasons.
"I'm looking forward to building on the success we had this season," Finley said in a statement posted on GoPack.com.
Wolfpack QB Finley returning for final college season
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State quarterback Ryan Finley says he'll return for his final season of eligibility instead of entering the NFL draft.
The school released Finley's statement Saturday, with Finley saying he believes N.C. State could win an Atlantic Coast Conference title with several key starters returning on offense.
NC State's 52-31 Sun Bowl victory against Arizona State matched the Pack's talent and its potential to end a season that raised the bar in Raleigh.
"We have records being broken in this game -- the all-time leading receiver here in Jaylen Samuels, we have a 3,000-yard passer in Ryan Finley, a 1,000-yard receiver in Kelvin Harmon and a 1,000-yard rusher in Nyheim Hines," head coach Dave Doeren said after the game.
NC State beat Arizona State 52-31 in the Sun Bowl to finish the season with a 9-4 record (6-2 ACC). The performance is the Wolfpack's first 50-plus point game against a Power-Five opponent in Dave Doeren's five years in Raleigh and the first for the program since beating Maryland 56-41 in 2011.
Hines’ career day leads NC State past UNC, 33-21
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Nyheim Hines recovered from a concussion just in time to give rival North Carolina a headache.
Hines rushed for a career-best 196 yards and two long touchdowns, and North Carolina State beat the Tar Heels 33-21 on Saturday night.
No. 25 NC State looks to finish strong against Wake Forest
No. 25 North Carolina State (7-3, 5-1 ACC, CFP No. 19) at Wake Forest (6-4, 3-3), Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPNU)
Records: Clemson 6-1, 8-1; N.C. State 4-1, 6-3.
Why the Wolfpack lost: Strong out of the gate, State’s offense couldn’t maintain consistency and scored on just two of eight drives in the second half while also turning the ball over twice. Untimely penalties proved costly again, and the Wolfpack couldn’t get the Tigers’ offense off the field, allowing Clemson to convert 7 of 16 third-down attempts.
No. 6 Clemson holds off No. 20 NC State 38-31 in ACC
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Clemson trailed much of the day. It faced a veteran ranked team with a strong defensive line. And it was playing in front of a hostile crowd in a game the sixth-ranked Tigers had to win to stay in the race for another College Football Playoff appearance.
In the end, Dabo Swinney's bunch responded with the same big-game composure — even with a younger team that lost so many stars from last year's national championship squad.
From Ryan Finley to Jaylen Samuels, Clemson defense has hands full at N.C. State
CLEMSON — He has watched the tape and spent all week formulating a game plan. And for Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables, this N.C. State offense his Clemson team faces Saturday seems to have a familiar vibe to it.
In one sense, it reminds him of one of Clemson’s biggest divisional rivals in the past: Florida State.
Harmon leading No. 20 Wolfpack’s improved wide receiver play
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State's Kelvin Harmon is changing the 20th-ranked Wolfpack's passing game.
The 6-foot-3 sophomore is on pace for the program's best receiving season in more than a decade entering Saturday's game against No. 6 Clemson. He's providing quarterback Ryan Finley with a big and strong downfield target, one that N.C. State didn't really have in its first four seasons under coach Dave Doeren.
Sapakoff: The Gamecocks’ best offense is a big-play defense good enough for a sweet season
KNOXVILLE, TENN. — When Travaris Robinson made his pregame Rocky Top revelation Saturday morning he saw eyes light up in the visiting locker room at Neyland Stadium.
The South Carolina defensive coordinator told his players the Gamecocks’ SEC game at Tennessee would probably come down to a last-second play.
“That’s what we live for,” senior linebacker Skai Moore said. “We love that pressure.”
As N.C. State arrives at the midway point of its season at 3-0 in ACC play and 5-1 overall, a look at how the Wolfpack got here and what might be ahead for Coach Dave Doeren’s team.
FSU QB Blackman gets 1st start for Seminoles vs NC State
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — The matchup between North Carolina State and 12th-ranked Florida State features a stark contrast between quarterbacks.
Wolfpack quarterback Ryan Finley is on a roll.
One week after knocking off Marshall, Finley was locked in in a 49-16 win over Furman.

Finley throws 3 TDs, NC State beats Marshall 37-20
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State's slow start had nothing to do with losing last week. The Wolfpack's strong finish had everything to do with finding a rhythm.
Ryan Finley threw three touchdown passes and N.C. State beat Marshall 37-20 on Saturday night.
The season's first round of football coaching grades for area schools North Carolina, NC State, Duke and East Carolina are in and the good news is there’s room for a world of improvement for almost everyone in the room. Ron Rivera of the NFL Carolina Panthers will join the roll-call next week.
CHARLOTTE – If you got to win by making one less mistake than the other guy …
You won the game.
South Carolina survived an N.C. State rally after a huge blunder on special teams Saturday as it won its season-opener, 35-28. The Gamecocks’ defense bared its teeth and was forcing the Wolfpack into submission in the second half, taking a two-touchdown lead, but Chris Lammons’ botched punt return opened the door for an N.C. State comeback.
NC State hopes veterans provide edge against South Carolina
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State coach Dave Doeren spent the offseason touting the Wolfpack's depth and experience. Now his team gets a Saturday opener against a power-conference opponent — South Carolina in Charlotte — in the first test of whether the program is ready to take a leap in his fifth season.
"This is what we've been building," senior Jaylen Samuels said. "This is what everybody has been waiting for."
After years of building, NC State poised for leap in 2017
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Dave Doeren has spent the past four seasons building up North Carolina State's roster, developing young players into game-ready starters and gradually accumulating experience throughout the depth chart.
The payoff could come this fall.
"We've been playing young against some really talented rosters," Doeren said, "and this year we're not — finally."
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State's offense now knows what it's doing.
With Boise State transfer Ryan Finley settling in for his second season as the starting quarterback and everyone else more familiar with second-year coordinator Eli Drinkwitz's system, the Wolfpack didn't have to worry about adjusting to wholesale change.
Instead, they dedicated this spring to getting things finely tuned.
NC State beats Vanderbilt 41-17 in Independence Bowl
SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — North Carolina State quarterback Ryan Finley has a simple philosophy when it comes to getting do-everything threat Jaylen Samuels involved with the offense.
"Just give him the ball in as many ways as possible," Finley said.
The method of choice on Monday was by air, and Finley found Samuels for three touchdowns passes in North Carolina State's 41-17 win over Vanderbilt in the Independence Bowl.
NC State's defense played well when its offense didn't and the Wolfpack offense gained steam as the defense lost its force.
The result: a 27-13 loss to Miami on Senior Day, yet another missed opportunity for a win by a team that points to basic mistakes after the clock winds down.
A fourth-quarter drive, that started with NC State trailing 20-10 encompassed the type of frustrating play that has become the marque of the 2016 season.
