Rangers break through in seventh, beat Mariners 2-0
SEATTLE (AP) — Interim manager Don Wakamatsu is getting a long September look at some of the future pitching pieces of the Texas Rangers.
Rookie right-hander Ariel Jurado is stating his case to be included in the Rangers' 2019 rotation. And hard-throwing Jose Leclerc just keeps putting up zeroes at the back end of the bullpen.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Rougned Odor thrived in oppressive conditions.
Odor drove in three runs, Ryan Rua hit a two-run homer and the Texas Rangers withstood the heat on a 108-degree afternoon to beat the Cleveland Indians 5-0 on Sunday, stopping a four-game losing streak.
The game time temperature was 102 degrees — 5 shy of the stadium record set Friday and matched Saturday — then rose in the afternoon sunshine.
BALTIMORE (AP) — Ryan Rua has struggled over his young career as a pinch hitter for the Texas Rangers.
However, he made the most of the opportunity against the free-falling Baltimore Orioles.
Rua had a tiebreaking, pinch-hit three-run homer in the seventh inning and the Rangers held on to beat the Orioles 5-4 Friday night to snap a three-game losing streak.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Texas Rangers have placed first baseman Ronald Guzman on the seven-day concussion disabled list and recalled utilityman Ryan Rua from Triple-A Round Rock.
The Rangers made the move Tuesday, a day after Guzman left in the sixth inning of a 7-4 win over San Diego after his head struck the knee of third baseman Christian Villanueva when the rookie was diving back on an attempted pickoff.
SEATTLE (AP) — The Texas Rangers activated third baseman Adrian Beltre off the 10-day disabled list before Thursday's series finale against Seattle.
Ryan Rua was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock to clear a roster spot.
Guzman caps rally in Rangers’ 6-5 win over Houston
HOUSTON (AP) — Ronald Guzman said he is having the best week of his life, and after Saturday, it's hard to argue.
Guzman's first career homer tied the game in the eighth inning, and he put the Rangers ahead with an infield single in the 10th as Texas rallied from five runs down to beat the Houston Astros 6-5.
Rangers’ Ryan Rua avoids arbitration with $870,000 deal
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Texas Rangers outfielder Ryan Rua has agreed to an $870,000, one-year contract to avoid salary arbitration.
In four stints with Texas last season, Rua hit .217 with three home runs and 12 RBIs over 63 games. The right-hander, who has spent parts of the last four seasons with the Rangers, played left field and also appeared some at first base last year. He had a major league salary of $544,740.
Tyler Ratliff is a self-admitted underdog.
The Spokane Indians third baseman says he’s had to prove himself throughout his playing career.
Ratliff was a 17th-round draft pick in June. It’s a round that has proven golden for the Texas Rangers, Spokane’s parent club. Such standouts as Ian Kinsler, Mitch Moreland and Ryan Rua have been 17th-round selections.
Whether Ratliff proves to be worthy of mention with that company is still to be, well, you know, proven.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Rangers have activated right-hander Tyson Ross for his Texas debut following offseason surgery, and first baseman Mike Napoli and center fielder Carlos Gomez are coming off the disabled list.
Texas also recalled left-handed reliever Dario Alvarez from Triple-A Round Rock on Friday before the opener of a three-game series at home against Seattle.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Tampa Bay right-hander Matt Andriese has left the Rays' game against Texas in the second inning with a mild groin strain.
Andriese walked off the mound after striking out Ryan Rua for the second out, and a Rays trainer came out to check on him along with manager Kevin Cash. After a brief conversation, Andriese threw one warm-up pitch before leaving Tuesday night's game.
Chih-Wei Hu, who was recalled from Triple-A Durham earlier in the day, replaced Andriese.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Delino DeShields provided a spark at the top of the lineup. Ryan Rua and Shin-Soo Choo topped off a big finish with some late long balls.
Rua hit his first career grand slam and Choo connected for a three-run homer in Texas' eight-run eighth, leading the Rangers to a 14-3 rout against the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday night.
Before the game got out of hand, the Rangers went ahead to stay when Joey Gallo took a couple of hits on a tiebreaking trip around the bases.
Napoli’s return alters expected roles for some young Rangers
SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — Jurickson Profar is pretty much off first base for now with the Texas Rangers. So are young slugger Joey Gallo and Ryan Rua.
The team's reunion with slugger Mike Napoli has changed the outlook this season for those young players. It also will likely mean veteran Shin-Soo Choo spending more time as the designated hitter than in the outfield after being plagued by injuries in 2016.
Rangers’ Choo set for surgery on broken left wrist, forearm
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Texas Rangers leadoff hitter Shin-Soo Choo is set for surgery Wednesday to have a plate inserted near the break in his left wrist and forearm.
Choo went on the disabled list Tuesday for the fourth time this season. The fracture occurred during Monday's 5-2 win over Oakland on a pitch from left-hander Ross Detwiler and is likely to end the right fielder's season.
The surgery will be performed by Dallas hand specialist Dr. Thomas DiLiberti.
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Jefry Marte hit a three-run homer and the Angels shut down a late rally by the AL West-leading Texas Rangers for a 7-4 win Wednesday night that gave Los Angeles a three-game sweep.
It was the second straight sweep for the Angels, who won their sixth in a row and moved out of last place in the AL West.
Albert Pujols had two hits and scored twice, Yunel Escobar had two RBIs and Marte hit his sixth home run.
