Rested Cardinals face daunting trip to Kansas City
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — When the season started for the Arizona Cardinals, Sam Bradford was the quarterback and Mike McCoy was offensive coordinator.
Now both are gone.
On Saturday, while the team was enjoying a long weekend off, the Cardinals released Bradford, who lost his starting job after three games to rookie Josh Rosen and had been inactive for the last five. Bradford's departure came a little less than two weeks after McCoy was fired and replaced by quarterbacks coach Byron Leftwich.
Cardinals release QB Sam Bradford
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals have released quarterback Sam Bradford.
Bradford, whose eight NFL seasons have been plagued by injuries, signed a one-year, $20 million contract — with $15 million guaranteed — in the offseason. He started the first three games before being replaced by rookie Josh Rosen.
Cards right guard Pugh active with big wrap on left hand
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona Cardinals right guard Justin Pugh was active for Thursday night's game against Denver, his injured left hand encased in a large cast-like wrap.
There were no other surprises among inactives. Broncos left guard Ron Leary (Achilles tendon) and right tackle Jared Veldheer (knee) already had been declared out, as was Cardinals left guard Mike Iupati (back) and safety Tre Boston (shoulder, ribs).
Cardinals switch to rookie Josh Rosen at QB
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Rookie Josh Rosen will take over as the Arizona Cardinals' starting quarterback this Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks.
Rosen, the 10th overall pick in this year's draft, replaced veteran Sam Bradford in Sunday's 16-14 loss to the Chicago Bears with 4:31 left to play after three Arizona second-half possessions ended in turnovers.
Defense does it again for Chicago; QB change in Arizona?
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Defense did it again for Chicago.
An early two-touchdown deficit in Arizona seemed to make the Bears even angrier. The Cardinals never scored again and the Bears escaped the desert with a 16-14 victory.
"Turnovers, takeaways and stopping the run," Bears coach Matt Nagy said. "... For our defense, three weeks in a row they've done some special things."
The Cardinals, 0-3 for the first time since 2004, may have a new quarterback, too.
Bears rally for 16-14 victory over winless Cardinals
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Another opportunistic day by the Chicago defense has the Bears at 2-1 and alone in first place in the NFC North for the first time since late in the 2013 season.
The Arizona Cardinals, meanwhile, have joined the parade of teams with a rookie quarterback on the field.
Cody Parkey kicked his third field goal of the game, a 43-yarder with 4:31 to remaining, to rally the Bears to a 16-14 victory over the winless Cardinals on Sunday.
FANTASY PLAYS: Burning fantasy questions for Week 3
A look at some key fantasy questions going into Week 3:
ARE THE CARDINALS REALLY THIS BAD? CAN YOU STILL START DAVID JOHNSON?
‘Frustrated’ Bradford looks to turn around Arizona’s offense
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals' offense has been dreadful by any measure and Sam Bradford knows that, as the quarterback, he takes the lion's share of the blame.
Cardinals looking for answers on offense after loss to Rams
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals' offense ran one play in opposing territory on Sunday, the last play of their 34-0 loss at the Los Angeles Rams.
Not surprisingly, first-year Cardinals coach Steve Wilks is considering making changes to get an offense that has scored six points in eight quarters headed in the right direction.
"I don't even know where to start right now," Wilks said. "It's just we got to do a much better job running the football. We got to do a much better job protecting.
Bradford faces Rams for 1st time when Cards visit Coliseum
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Six years before the Rams chose Jared Goff with the No. 1 overall pick to be the savior of a struggling franchise, they tried the same thing with Sam Bradford.
And if Bradford had been running an offense created by the likes of Sean McVay, he might still have that job instead of being on the other sideline Sunday with the Arizona Cardinals.
Colts’ Luck is next big test for Redskins’ Dunbar
LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Quinton Dunbar watched in middle school as Larry Fitzgerald caught passes in the NFL.
Years later, Fitzgerald was patting Dunbar on the helmet for a job well done.
Arizona’s sputtering offense faces Rams’ stout defense
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals offense did very little in their season opener, a 24-6 home loss to Washington.
They promise improvement, but it will have to come Sunday against a team with maybe the best defense in the NFL, the Rams, and in Los Angeles yet.
Cardinals routed 24-6 by Redskins in Wilks’ debut
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The new-look Arizona Cardinals looked a lot like the old ones with a desert dud of a debut under coach Steve Wilks.
Pushed around all afternoon, the Cardinals were dominated in nearly aspect on Sunday to open the Wilks era with an ugly 24-6 loss to the Washington Redskins.
QB Bradford says he’s done all he can to have healthy season
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — If another injury comes, Sam Bradford says, there is nothing else he could have done in his preparation for the coming season to avoid it.
Approaching Sunday's debut as Arizona Cardinals quarterback, Bradford said Wednesday his battered left knee "does feel as good as it has felt in a long time."

NFL 2018: Vikings-Packers rivalry as fierce as ever
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Will the Minnesota Vikings pick up where they left off, following their surge to the NFC championship game last season?
Or will the Green Bay Packers rebound forcefully enough to take back the division they've mostly dominated for two decades?
The annual report on the NFC North has almost always focused on the Packers, the Vikings or both of these fierce rivals since the NFL's most recent realignment produced the current eight-division format in 2002.
Cardinals rookie QB Rosen hoping to play in preseason finale
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Josh Rosen wants to play, but the rookie quarterback needs the go-ahead from his head coach before he can suit up and take snaps in the Arizona Cardinals' preseason finale.
That isn't likely to come until before kickoff Thursday, when Arizona hosts the Denver Broncos.
Rosen threw sharp passes in practice Tuesday, the thumb injury that kept him out of Sunday's game against Dallas not appearing to bother him. Rosen slammed his thumb into a helmet during practice last week.
Cardinals rookie Rosen a game-time decision for Cowboys game
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals may be without rookie quarterback Josh Rosen when they play at Dallas in a preseason game Sunday night.
Coach Steve Wilks said after Friday's practice that Rosen's participation would be a game-time decision. Rosen slammed his thumb into a helmet during practice early this week.
Wilks said if Rosen doesn't play, Mike Glennon and rookie Charles Kanoff would split time after starter Sam Bradford departs the game.
Cardinals QBs productive in 20-15 preseason win over Saints
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Free-agent acquisition Sam Bradford and 10th overall draft choice Josh Rosen combined to provide a promising outlook for the Arizona Cardinals' quarterback situation.
After Bradford completed all six of his passes for 61 yards, Rosen went 10 of 16 for 107 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown to rookie Christian Kirk in a 20-15 preseason victory over New Orleans on Friday night.
Jets and Redskins a study in contrasts at quarterback
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Unsure of Kirk Cousins' future, the Washington Redskins scoped out the quarterback market and saw a lot of unknowns.
Former Michigan QB Speight enjoying fresh start at UCLA
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Wilton Speight does not fit the mold of the dual-threat quarterbacks Chip Kelly coached at Oregon.
In his three seasons at Michigan, the 6-foot-2, 232-pound Speight's longest run was a 17-yard scamper in the 2016 Orange Bowl.
But in joining UCLA for his final season of eligibility, Speight trusts Kelly to show the same offensive flexibility he did in coaching the Philadelphia Eagles should the graduate transfer win the starting job.
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Barring unforeseen circumstances, rookie Josh Rosen will begin his first NFL season on the sidelines as Arizona's backup quarterback.
The preseason, though, will be his chance to shine, beginning Saturday night when the Cardinals play at home against the Los Angeles Chargers.
"We want him to play quite a bit and really get into the flow of the game," coach Steve Wilks said.
Rosen said his two weeks of training camp have "gone really well."
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Quarterback Sam Bradford was well aware of David Johnson even before signing with the Cardinals in the offseason.
Bradford was on the opposite sideline when Johnson rushed for 187 yards and three touchdowns while trouncing Bradford's Eagles in 2015.
A training camp with Johnson has only amplified Bradford's appreciation.
Vikings, Diggs reach deal on 5-year extension
EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings have secured yet another core player with a long-term contract, signing wide receiver Stefon Diggs to a five-year extension and moving the star of the "Minneapolis Miracle" pass into the NFL's top 10 highest-paid players at his position.
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — If he stays healthy.
Those words have shadowed Sam Bradford through most of his injury-plagued eight seasons in the NFL.
And it looms large again as the 30-year-old quarterback went through the first practice of Arizona Cardinals training camp Saturday.
"I think you have to be optimistic," he said. "I think if you're not optimistic, then the odds of staying healthy and the odds of playing well, they're probably not that great."

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The temperature was well into triple digits and sweat-soaked Larry Fitzgerald was still going full bore, hauling in passes from Sam Bradford and Josh Rosen.
Entering his 15th season, with career receiving numbers among the best to have played the game, Fitzgerald is not talking about whether this year in the NFL will be his last.
"I'm just trying to make it to February in one piece," he said after the team's second day of minicamp on Wednesday.
Cardinals release QBs Doughty, Torgersen
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals have released Brandon Doughty and Alek Torgersen, two quarterbacks they claimed off waivers a month ago.
The drafting of Josh Rosen and signing of Princeton's Chad Kanoff as an undrafted rookie free agent leaves the team with enough quarterbacks to get through the three-day rookie minicamp that starts Friday. The Cardinals also have veterans Sam Bradford and Mike Glennon.
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — It's a new world for the Arizona Cardinals — a new head coach, new offense, new coordinators and an old problem.
The team still needs a long-term solution at quarterback.
When the Cardinals hired Carolina defensive coordinator Steve Wilks to replace the retired coach Bruce Arians, there was nary a quarterback on the roster.
General manager Steve Keim addressed that issue short term by signing Sam Bradford to start and Mike Glennon as the backup.
Vikings announce preseason game opponents, starting with Case Keenum’s Broncos
Case Keenums debut in a Broncos jersey will come against the Vikings.
NFL teams announced preseason opponents Wednesday, and the Vikings opening contest will be in Denver. The date isnt set yet, but will be between Aug. 9-12 in the first week of the exhibition slate.
Keenum signed a two-year, $36 million contract with the Broncos last month as the Vikings pursued and signed Kirk Cousins. The Vikings went 12-4 in Keenums starts last season, ending in a NFC Championship game loss.
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals have been awarded waiver claims on quarterbacks Brad Doughty from the Miami Dolphins and Alek Torgersen from the Detroit Lions.
Neither has thrown a pass in the NFL.
Doughty was a seventh-round pick of the Dolphins out of Western Kentucky in 2016 and spent the last two seasons on the Miami practice squad. Torgersen was an undrafted rookie free agent out of Penn last year and spent the season on the Washington and Detroit practice squads.
Trevor Siemian offers familiar risks, welcome security as Vikings’ backup quarterback
Randball: Michael Rand
After deciding to trade for Sam Bradford late in the 2016 preseason when Teddy Bridgewater was injured and backup Shaun Hill was deemed not desirable enough as a full-time starter, the Vikings probably didnt need much more convincing when it comes to the value of having a good backup plan at QB.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings have finalized their trade with the Denver Broncos for quarterback Trevor Siemian to be the backup to free agent prize Kirk Cousins.
Though Siemian started 24 games for the Broncos over the past two seasons, he didn't balk at his unquestioned place as the second-stringer on the depth chart.
"I'm here for Kirk. I'm here for these guys, and I want to win a bunch of games here," Siemian said.
Its not the complete list, but here are some of the players who changed teams in the past week and some of the ones who stayed put:
Player 2017 team Status 2018 team
Danny Amendola, WR New England Free agent Miami
Michael Bennett, DE Seattle Traded Philadelphia
Sam Bradford, QB Vikings Free agent Arizona
Nigel Bradham, LB Philadelphia Free agent Re-signed
Bradford says knee feels ‘good’ as he signs with Arizona
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Sam Bradford has arrived in Arizona, acknowledging his difficult history with injuries but saying he feels fine now as he prepares to start at quarterback for the Cardinals under new coach Steve Wilks.
John Elway says Case Keenum was his main man all along
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Kirk Cousins was the unequivocal jewel of this year's free agent quarterback class in just about everyone's mind but John Elway's.
"We got our guy," the Denver Broncos general manager said Friday at Case Keenum's introductory news conference. "We got the guy that was our target."
Even though Keenum was No. 1 in Elway's eyes, he was viewed over the last several weeks as something of a runner-up even in the Broncos locker room.
Here are five general observations from Arthur Arkush about the start of a frenzied free-agent period:
1. Playing with fire in the desert
If the Cardinals get 2016 Sam Bradford, their decision to guarantee him $15 million coming off a year in which he played four quarters of football, albeit brilliant football, before his season was ultimately over won't come back to haunt them.
The Vikings front office and coaching staff, there was a big benefit in how they were able to evaluate Kirk Cousins both on film and in person.
Kirk Cousins’ lucrative Vikings contract is cost of doing business in high-stakes NFL
The Vikings were coming off a division championship in 2008 when they jumped at the opportunity to replace former second-round pick Tarvaris Jackson as their starting quarterback with Brett Favre. They paid the Hall of Famer $12 million for the 2009 season, and boosted his 2010 salary from $13 million to $16 million to lure him back one more time.
Cardinals look to shore up QB spot in free agency
PHOENIX (AP) — With a quarterback or two finally on the way, the Arizona Cardinals were acting quickly to shore up their lineup with some early free agency moves.
A person familiar with the situation said quarterback Sam Bradford had agreed to a one-year contract worth up to $20 million, with a second year at the club's option. The person requested anonymity because the signing had not been announced.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — While Kirk Cousins was on his way to visit, the Minnesota Vikings were moving swiftly toward securing a potential backup.
According to a person with knowledge of the negotiations, the Vikings were working on a trade Wednesday with the Denver Broncos to acquire quarterback Trevor Siemian. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal, first reported by NFL Media, was not final.
