Newman was listed as the starter on the team's depth chart released Tuesday, two days before gameday. He replaces Sam Hartman, a freshman who started the first nine games before suffering a season-ending leg injury late in last week's 41-24 loss to No. 13 Syracuse.
Wake Forest QB Hartman out for season with leg injury
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Wake Forest says starting quarterback Sam Hartman will miss the rest of the season with a leg injury.
Coach Dave Clawson disclosed Hartman's injury on Sunday, a day after he was hurt during a 41-24 loss to Syracuse.
Hartman had started all nine games for the Demon Deacons (4-5, 1-4 ACC) but becomes the 12th Wake Forest player to suffer a season-ending injury. He was 161 of 291 for 1,984 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Wake Forest blows out Louisville 56-35 for first ACC victory
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Wake Forest running back Matt Colburn II couldn't believe the space he had on many of his carries against Louisville.
While that says a lot about the Demon Deacons' run blocking, the senior did a lot in turning those openings into a career day against the school that pulled its scholarship offer.
Florida State pulls away to knock off Wake Forest
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Cam Akers had two touchdown runs, including a 58-yarder, and Deondre Francois threw for a season-high 353 yards as Florida State bounced back from a sloppy start and scored 38 straight points in a 38-17 win over Wake Forest on Saturday.

Brown throws 5 TDs, BC beats Wake Forest, 41-34
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Anthony Brown kept beating Wake Forest's defensive backs with long throws. That helped Boston College beat the Demon Deacons — and Hurricane Florence.
Brown threw two of his career-high five touchdown passes to Jeff Smith, and BC defeated Wake Forest 41-34 on Thursday night in a game that started two hours early with the hurricane approaching.
"Everybody was on point with what we were doing and everybody was in tune with what we had to execute," Brown said.
Wake Forest looks to keep Hartman rolling vs Towson
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — No Wake Forest quarterback had a better starting debut than Sam Hartman. The freshman wants to keep it going in Week 2.
The Demon Deacons (1-0) play host to Towson (1-0) of the FCS on Saturday, and they hope Hartman will be just as effective against the Tigers as he was in his first college start.
Wake Forest survives to beat Tulane 23-17 in OT
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Wake Forest true freshman quarterback Sam Hartman wasn't entirely immune to the type of blunders that plague young players and drive coaches crazy.
Still, he was prolific enough to get away with it in what was roundly reviewed as a promising collegiate debut.
Hartman passed for 378 yards and two touchdowns, Cade Carney powered in for a short TD in overtime, and the Demon Deacons escaped their season-opening visit to Tulane with a 23-17 victory Thursday night.
Seven members of Wake Forest’s 2018 football recruiting class arrived in Winston-Salem early. The freshmen joined the program in January and have been working out since.
That many mid-year enrollees is a large number for any program, and it’s the most ever for Wake Forest. With so many new faces around spring practice, it seemed like as good a time as any to get to know them.
