4 Americans pull off upsets at Shanghai Masters
SHANGHAI (AP) — Four American players pulled off upsets at the Shanghai Masters on Monday. A fifth wasn't so lucky.
Sam Querrey, Mackenzie McDonald, Bradley Klahn and Taylor Fritz all posted wins in the first round of the tournament, while Frances Tiafoe lost his match.
Perhaps the most surprising win came from the 81st-ranked McDonald, who defeated 14th-seeded Milos Raonic 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.

Chair umpire Ramos hands Cilic warning for slamming racket
ZADAR, Croatia (AP) — Chair umpire Carlos Ramos issued a code violation to Croatia after Marin Cilic slammed his racket to the clay and mangled the frame during a Davis Cup loss to Sam Querrey of the United States.
Since it was the first violation of the match, it was only a warning. No points were deducted and Cilic did not exchange any words with Ramos.
"Usually when you break a racket you get a code violation," Cilic said.
US Open final chair ump Ramos to work US-Croatia Davis Cup
The chair umpire who penalized Serena Williams a game in the U.S. Open final has been assigned to officiate the Davis Cup semifinal matches between the United States and Croatia, The Associated Press has learned.

Playing his first match since February, the three-time Grand Slam champion lost to 55th-ranked Steve Johnson 6-4, 6-4 Sunday in the first round of the Italian Open.
Wawrinka committed 30 unforced errors to his American opponent's 17, was broken once in each set and failed to take advantage of his only two break opportunities.

Nashville will host US-Belgium Davis Cup quarterfinal
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Davis Cup quarterfinal between the United States and Belgium will take place April 6-8 at Belmont University in Nashville.
Belmont's Curb Event Center was announced as the Davis Cup quarterfinal site Thursday.
This will mark the Davis Cup's first stop in Nashville since a 1978 matchup between the United States and South Africa.
Harrison wins opening match at New York Open

Seen by some as a tennis version of the Ryder Cup in golf, the inaugural Laver Cup was played on an unusual black hard court.

NEW YORK (AP) — Sam Querrey was about as perfect as can be en route to becoming the first American man in the U.S. Open quarterfinals since 2011.
Not that Querrey feels any sort of burden when it comes to the carrying-the-flag aspect of his career-best run at Flushing Meadows.
"I never once thought about that this whole tournament or that match out there tonight," he said. "I don't feel any extra pressure."

The 17th-seeded Querrey hit 18 aces and never faced a break point while dominating his way to win in 77 minutes on Sunday night in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Murray out of Cincinnati event because of hip injury
LONDON (AP) — Andy Murray has pulled out of next week's Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati because of an ongoing hip injury.
The top-ranked Murray has not played since his Wimbledon quarterfinal loss to Sam Querrey on July 12.
Murray said in a post on his Facebook page Wednesday that he is working hard to be fit for the U.S. Open, which starts on Aug. 28.
