Mariners get lefty reliever Zach Duke from Twins
SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Mariners have added to their bullpen by acquiring left-handed reliever Zach Duke from the Minnesota Twins for a pair of minor leaguers.
Seattle made a second move in a matter of days to bolster its relief corps. Seattle sent pitcher Chase De Jong and infielder Ryan Costello to the Twins on Monday, less than 24 hours before the non-waiver trade deadline.
SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Mariners bolstered their bullpen on Friday by acquiring right-handed reliever Sam Tuivailala from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for minor-league pitcher Seth Elledge.
Tuivailala is 3-3 with a 3.69 ERA in 31 appearances for St. Louis this season, his second full season in the big leagues. He'll immediately jump into the playoff race with Seattle holding a one-game lead over Oakland for the second wild card in the American League.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Chicago Cubs got some key hits and effective pitching to get a big win.
Jason Heyward and Addison Russell homered, and Ian Happ had a tiebreaking RBI double in the seventh inning as the Cubs rallied to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3 on Saturday night.
Chicago starter Kyle Hendricks (5-6) gave up three runs and seven hits in six innings, snapping a career-high three game losing streak. Brandon Morrow got the last three outs for his 16th save in 17 chances.
Asuaje, Margot lead late rally as Padres beat Cardinals 4-3
ST. LOUIS (AP) — If Jose Pirela got a boost of confidence from facing a struggling St. Louis bullpen, he wouldn't admit it.
Carlos Asuaje's RBI single in the ninth inning gave San Diego the lead and Pirela's sacrifice fly proved to be the game-winner as the Padres rallied to beat the Cardinals 4-3 on Thursday night.
Cardinals activate OF Grichuk, LHP Duke from DL
CHICAGO (AP) — The sliding St. Louis Cardinals made a flurry of moves before the start of a key series against the Chicago Cubs, activating outfielder Randal Grichuk and reliever Zach Duke from the disabled list on Friday and recalling catching prospect Carson Kelly from Triple-A Memphis.
Cardinals activate Rosenthal from 10-day disabled list
WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have activated right-hander Trevor Rosenthal from the 10-day disabled list.
The former closer was sidelined with a right lat strain. Right-hander Sam Tuivailala was optioned to Triple-A Memphis to open a spot on the roster.
Rosenthal set the Cardinals' single-season save record with 48 in 2015. He made five spring training appearances, including one start, and struck out 11 with a 1.80 ERA in 10 innings.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have activated Kevin Siegrist from the 15-day disabled list, adding a left-handed reliever to the mix for the first series after the All-Star break.
Right-handed reliever Sam Tuivailala was optioned to Triple-A Memphis.
Siegrist, who turns 27 Wednesday, has been out since June 30 with mononucleosis. He was 5-2, tied for the National League lead in victories by a reliever.
