ROME (AP) — Former U.S. Open finalist Roberta Vinci will retire from tennis after the Italian Open in May.

The 34-year-old Vinci made the announcement on Twitter and in an interview with the Gazzetta dello Sport.

She said she decided to retire midseason after struggling with injuries this year, which dropped her ranking to No. 117.

Vinci will enter qualifying for the Australian Open in January "with the goal of arriving in Rome in form. I want to go out with a bang."

ROME (AP) — Italy's anti-doping agency is appealing to lengthen the two-month ban handed to former French Open finalist Sara Errani.

NADO Italia — which operates independently from the Italian Olympic Committee — filed a "statement of appeal" with the Switzerland-based Court of Arbitration for Sport, without specifying how long of a ban it is seeking.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Daniil Medvedev fought off a match point with a 129-mph ace during a third-set tiebreak and beat Reilly Opelka to advance to the second round of the Citi Open.

Medvedev, of Russia, twisted his ankle on the final point before the tiebreak, but shook off the pain to defeat the American 6-7 (6), 6-3, 7-6 (6) in 2 hours, 26 minutes on Monday night. He will next face 14th-seeded American Steve Johnson.

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (AP) — Former French Open runner-up Sara Errani edged Belinda Bencic 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in the Miami Open's first round Tuesday to win a match between former top-10 players.

Errani was once as high as No. 5 and a finalist at Roland Garros in 2012, but she has won only two Grand Slam matches since the start of 2016 and is now ranked 102nd. Bencic has been ranked No. 7 and is now 135th.

ROME (AP) — Camila Giorgi has been banned for nine months by the Italian Tennis Federation for refusing a Fed Cup callup.

The 74th-ranked Giorgi was also fined 30,000 euros ($32,000) for turning down a request to take part in Italy's tie against Spain in April.

The ban prevents Giorgi from Fed Cup play, training at federation facilities, and from receiving a wild card for the Italian Open in May.
