MADRID (AP) — Atletico Madrid says midfielder Saul Niguez has agreed to a new contract that will tie him to the Spanish club through 2026.
The 22-year-old Niguez extended his current contract by five seasons a day after he helped Spain reach the final of the Under-21 European Championship, which they lost to Germany 1-0 on Friday. Niguez was the tournament leading scorer with five, including a hat trick to beat Italy 3-0 in the semifinals.
MURCIA, Spain (AP) — Alvaro Morata scored in the 87th minute as Spain salvaged a 2-2 draw in a friendly against Colombia on Wednesday, remaining unbeaten under coach Julen Lopetegui.
Morata headed home a cross from the left-flank by Saul Niguez to extend Spain's streak without a loss to nine games since Lopetegui took over after the European Championship last year.
Atletico beats Leverkusen 4-2 in Germany in Champions League
LEVERKUSEN, Germany (AP) — French forwards Antoine Griezmann and Kevin Gameiro tore Bayer Leverkusen's defense apart to put the Champions League quarterfinals within reach for Atletico Madrid with a 4-2 away victory on Tuesday.
Gameiro created one goal for Griezmann and scored another, with Saul Niguez setting the Spanish side on its way, before substitute Fernando Torres completed the scoring in the Round of 16 match.
