Funding from a $230,000 grant to promote green jobs is helping the city transform three empty city-owned lots to space for growing trees, the Savannah Morning News reported. The pilot project already has 12 trainees growing 150 bald cypress and black gum saplings at the first site.

The Rhode Island Airport Corp. on Tuesday announced that Allegiant Air will offer direct flights to Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport in Savannah, Georgia, starting June 6.
Flights will run twice a week on Thursdays and Sundays through November. Opening fares for the first day to celebrate the new route are as low as $49.

2 people killed in South Carolina mobile home fire; 7 escape
BLUFFTON, S.C. (AP) — Two people have died in a fire at a mobile home near the South Carolina coast, while seven other people escaped.
Beaufort County sheriff's deputies say the bodies of a man and a woman were found inside the home after firefighters extinguished the blaze around 12:15 a.m. Thursday.
Deputies said in a statement four people who escaped were being treated for burns or smoke inhalation. They were taken to hospitals in Augusta, and Savannah, Georgia.
Historic Savannah restaurant damaged by fire may reopen soon
SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — A popular Georgia restaurant housed in one of Savannah's 18th century mansions plans to partially reopen soon after a fire caused extensive damage to the building during the holidays.
Investigators traced the Dec. 27 fire to a Christmas tree in an upstairs ballroom of the Olde Pink House in downtown Savannah. The restaurant is in a Georgian mansion built in 1771.

Georgia authorities investigate human remains at scrapyard
METTER, Ga. (AP) — Authorities say human remains found at a Georgia scrapyard came from a funeral home, where an owner says they had been stored for decades.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Monday in a news release it is attempting to identify three sets of remains discovered in containers delivered Friday to a scrapyard in Metter, about 60 miles (96 kilometers) west of Savannah.
