US Senate OKs Oklahoma professor for science policy office
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — President Donald Trump's appointment of a University of Oklahoma meteorologist as his top science adviser has been confirmed.
The U.S. Senate confirmed Kelvin Droegemeier Wednesday as director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Dozens of Trump nominees were approved by voice vote with most senators still away for their holiday break.

The White House announced Tuesday that the office will be directed by Kelvin Droegemeier. He is vice president for research and the regents' professor of meteorology at the University of Oklahoma. He also serves as Oklahoma Cabinet secretary of science and technology.
Clarification: Soda Tax story
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — In a story June 7, The Associated Press reported that CrossFit's chairman, Greg Glassman, planned to lobby for a bill to tax sugary drinks in Rhode Island. The headline and story should have made clear that while he planned to testify on behalf of the bill's sponsor that the soda industry has tried to influence health and science policy, Glassman did not plan to lobby for the tax.
Former Michigan Rep. Vern Ehlers, a physicist, dies at 83
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Vern Ehlers, a research physicist and moderate Republican who represented a western Michigan congressional district for 17 years and advocated for Great Lakes cleanup funding, has died. He was 83.
Ehlers died late Tuesday at a Grand Rapids nursing facility, Melissa Morrison, funeral director at Zaagman Memorial Chapel, said Wednesday.
