Senators’ Smith, Lightning’s Kucherov fined $5,000 each
NEW YORK (AP) — Zack Smith of the Ottawa Senators and Nikita Kucherov of the Tampa Bay Lightning have been fined $5,000 each Saturday for rough play during separate games.
The NHL said Smith was disciplined for elbowing Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Marcus Pettersson. The infraction came during the second period of Pittsburgh's 5-3 home victory.
Kucherov was fined for a dangerous trip of New York Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield during the first period. Tampa Bay won 1-0 in a shootout.
Islanders win in return to Coliseum, beat Blue Jackets 3-2
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) — The New York Islanders were energized by a boisterous home crowd as they rallied for a win in their first regular season game at Nassau Coliseum in more than 3 1/2 years.
Casey Cizikas scored the tiebreaking goal in the third period and the Islanders beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-2 Saturday night.
Greiss stops 35 shots, Islanders blank Devils 3-0
NEW YORK (AP) — Thomas Greiss made 35 saves for his first shutout of the season, and the New York Islanders beat the New Jersey Devils 3-0 on Saturday night for their fifth straight win.
It was Greiss' ninth career shutout. Dating to Oct. 28, Greiss has allowed just four goals on 114 shots.
Jordan Eberle, Brock Nelson and Scott Mayfield scored for New York, which improved to 6-0-0 against the Metropolitan Division this season. Josh Bailey had two assists to extend his point streak to eight games.

NEW YORK (AP) — So much for all that talk about the New York Islanders' situation in goal.
Thomas Greiss and Robin Lehner have formed a pretty solid tandem so far.
Greiss made 35 saves for his first shutout of the season, and the Islanders beat the New Jersey Devils 3-0 on Saturday night for their fifth straight win.
"We feed off that," forward Josh Bailey said. "When he and Lehner are on, it adds so much confidence to our team."
Islanders sign D Scott Mayfield to 5-year contract extension
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The New York Islanders have signed defenseman Scott Mayfield to a five-year contract extension through the 2023-24 season.
The deal announced Thursday has an average annual value of $1.45 million, according to Newsday.
The 25-year-old Mayfield has two goals and eight assists in a career-high 29 games this season. He led the team with 35 penalty minutes before Thursday night's game at Philadelphia.
Philadelphia —Justin Abdelkader's holiday just got a little less bright.
Abdelkader was fined $5,000 — the maximum allowed under the collective bargaining agreement — for his spear Tuesday on New York Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield.
Abdelkader was assessed a minor penalty for slashing.
Red Wings’ Abdelkader fined $5,000 for spearing Islander
NEW YORK (AP) — Detroit Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader has been fined $5,000 by the NHL for spearing New York Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield in Tuesday night's game.
The league's department of player safety handed down the fine Wednesday.
The incident occurred in the first period of the Red Wings' 6-3 win over the Islanders. Abdelkader was assessed a minor penalty for slashing.
Mathew Barzal has 5 assists, Islanders beat Avalanche 6-4
NEW YORK (AP) — Mathew Barzal put on a passing clinic for the New York Islanders.
Barzal had a franchise-rookie record five assists in the Islanders' 6-4 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday night.
"It's pretty cool I didn't know," Barzal said about the record. "Actually (Jordan Eberle) was saying maybe six would be a record, but we were just joking around. I had no idea, so that's a pretty cool thing to do."
Tavares’ tiebreaker finishes hat trick, Isles top Coyotes
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Islanders invariably look to their captain John Tavares for a boost and he delivered with a timely hat trick against the struggling Arizona Coyotes.
Tavares completed his three-goal night with a tiebreaking score in the third period, lifting the Islanders over the winless Arizona Coyotes 5-3 on Tuesday night.
The Islanders won their third straight and improved to 5-3-1. Jaroslav Halak made 32 saves for New York.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The New York Islanders' last four games have been must-wins — and Jaroslav Halak has won them all.
Halak stopped 29 shots in his second shutout of the season, and the fast-starting Islanders beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-0 on Thursday night.

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Islanders are playing their best hockey of the season, and they're doing it against some of the top teams in the Eastern Conference.
Andrew Ladd scored in the second period and Jaroslav Halak stopped 36 shots to lead the Islanders to a 4-2 victory over the crosstown-rival Rangers on Tuesday night. John Tavares, Jason Chimera and Scott Mayfield also scored at Barclays Center to help the last-place Islanders improve to 4-0-1 in their last five games.
Islanders place D Seidenberg on IR, D Hamonic returns
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Islanders have placed defenseman Dennis Seidenberg on injured reserve due to a broken jaw and called up Scott Mayfield from Bridgeport of the AHL.
Seidenberg was hit in the face by a puck Saturday night in the Islanders' 3-2 overtime loss at Florida.
