Sabres place Moulson on waivers; acquire Wilson from Wings
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The shake-up is starting in Buffalo, where Sabres general manager Jason Botterill began making moves in a bid to improve a vastly underperforming team on Monday.
Detroit — With the reality of a seven-game winless streak swirling everywhere around them, the Red Wings made a minor personnel move Monday in trading forward Scott Wilson to the Buffalo Sabres for a 2019 fifth-round draft pick.
Wilson was acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins early this season for Riley Sheahan, with draft picks going both ways.
Wilson, 25, didn't register a point in his 18 games with the Red Wings, mainly playing on the fourth line.
Buffalo — Andreas Athanasiou will be joining the Red Wings soon.
General manager Ken Holland said Tuesday Athanasiou has received a work permit and will be joining the Red Wings in Florida.
The Red Wings play Tampa Bay on Thursday and the Florida Panthers on Saturday.
Athanasiou still must pass a physical and it's up to coach Jeff Blashill as to when Athanasiou will enter the lineup.
Buffalo — In a way, the schedule really has helped Scott Wilson.
The newly acquired forward — Wilson came over Saturday from the Pittsburgh Penguins in the trade for Riley Sheahan — played one game at home with the Red Wings, and now is on a three-game, six-day road trip.
It's a perfect chance to bond with the new teammates, get to know them better, and get acclimated to the new surroundings.
Detroit – You often hear in professional sports about a trade helping both teams.
That appears to be the result of the Detroit Red Wings' trade of forward Riley Sheahan to Pittsburgh for forward Scott Wilson, with 2018 draft picks headed both ways.
New Red Wings defenseman Trevor Daley played for Pittsburgh the last two seasons.
"He's (Wilson) coming to a good spot and I let Riley know he's going to a good spot too," said Daley after Sunday's morning skate. "Hopefully it works out for both guys."
Detroit — The Red Wings shuffled and traded some bodies around Saturday, but in the end, this was mostly about the Red Wings creating salary=cap space.
After agreeing Friday on a contract agreement with Andreas Athanasiou, the Red Wings gained the financial flexibility to do so by trading forward Riley Sheahan and a 2018 fifth-round draft pick to the Penguins for forward Scott Wilson and a 2018 third-round draft pick.

Penguins eliminate Blue Jackets with 5-2 win in Game 5
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The puck fluttered into the net and the Columbus Blue Jackets thrust their arms into the air, certain they had tied the Pittsburgh Penguins early in the third period of Game 5 of their first-round playoff series.
One problem. They weren't the only ones with their arms up.
When an official waved off the goal and called Alex Wenneberg for interfering with Pittsburgh goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, the Penguins still had the lead and — even better — a power play.
Penguins hold on late, edge Hurricanes 3-2
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Mike Sullivan keeps insisting his team isn't looking ahead. That the Pittsburgh Penguins haven't let their eyes creep ahead to next week when their injury riddled regular season ends and the real defense of their Stanley Cup begins.
Sullivan's team backed up its coach, even with another familiar face out of the lineup indefinitely.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin spent more time in the penalty box than usual for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

"They're always able to get us a goal when we need it," winning goalie Matt Murray said.

"You can win ugly in this league," Sullivan told them.
The Stanley Cup champions responded with 20 minutes of grit against an opponent only too familiar with how deep the Penguins can dig when the moment requires.
CRANBERRY TWP. — Scott Wilson was playing the best hockey of his career.
After shuffling up and down between Wilkes-Barre and Pittsburgh earlier in the season, he’d earned a place in Mike Sullivan’s lineup and had appeared in 19 games in a row.
Then, Columbus’ Dalton Prout ended Wilson’s season with a hit that resulted in a broken ankle in an eventual 3-2 win for the Penguins against the Blue Jackets on March 11.
Thomas Di Pauli suspects he might beat former Notre Dame teammate Bryan Rust in a race around the rink.
Even if his skating speed fails him against one of the Penguins' fastest wingers, Di Pauli believes it will give him a good shot to push someone else out of a roster spot.
