MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minneapolis city attorney has declined to file charges against Minnesota running back Shannon Brooks after an alleged assault.

Brooks was arrested after an Oct. 14 incident in which his male roommate accused him of assault. No injuries were reported.

City spokeswoman Sarah McKenzie said in a statement that the investigation has been completed and there is insufficient evidence to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota running back Shannon Brooks will redshirt the 2018 season with a lower-body injury that will require surgery.

Coach P.J. Fleck said Tuesday, as the Gophers began spring practice, that Brooks will return to action as a fifth-year senior in 2019. He missed six games last season due to injuries, rushing for 369 yards on 79 attempts. Brooks has 20 total touchdowns in 28 career games. His absence leaves Rodney Smith as the only experienced ball carrier.

Oregon State coach Gary Andersen pretty much knows what to expect from Minnesota, even though the Golden Gophers have a new coach.

As coach at Wisconsin from 2013-14, Andersen faced Minnesota in the battle for Paul Bunyan's Axe twice, winning both times. Then last year he took the Beavers on the road for the first game of the series against the Gophers.

So while there are differences with the Gophers under P.J. Fleck, Andersen said he's confident about what Oregon State will face.

Whether Brooks will play Saturday against Colorado State depends on how he fares in practice. Coach Tracy Claeys said Tuesday that if Brooks is sore, the Gophers "won't take a chance on him this week."
