Snowmobilers rescued on Shawano Lake
SHAWANO, Wis. (AP) — The Shawano County Sheriff's Office is warning about ice conditions on Shawano Lake after two snowmobilers broke through and were rescued.
Deputies were called to an area near an island in the lake Saturday about 8 p.m. on a report of a snowmobile that hit some open water.
A 52-year-old Illinois man and a 39-year-old man from Appleton were rescued. Their conditions were not released.
Barn fire in Shawano County kills dozens of animals
SHAWANO, Wis. (AP) — Cows, horses, cats, dogs and chickens were killed when fire destroyed a barn in Shawano County.
The sheriff's office says barn in the Town of Red Spring was fully engulfed when deputies arrived on scene about 4 a.m. Wednesday. The owner of the barn says 30 cows, six horses, cats, dogs and chicken died in the fire.
The cause of the fire has not been determined, but is not believed to be suspicious.
Competency exam ordered for mother accused in son’s death
SHAWANO, Wis. (AP) — A competency exam has been ordered for a Shawano woman charged in the death of her infant son.
Prosecutors say 22-year-old Catherine Barker neglected her 2-month-old baby resulting in his death, failed to report the death and attempted to hide the body.

SHAWANO, Wis. (AP) — Shawano police say they're investigating the death of an infant.
Officers were called to a home last Friday to check on the welfare of a two-month-old child. Responding officers found the baby dead inside the home.
Authorities did not provide any additional information about the death Tuesday.
Attempted homicide charged filed in deputy attack
SHAWANO, Wis. (AP) — A man accused of choking a Shawano County sheriff's deputy who had pulled him over on suspicion of driving drunk is charged with attempted homicide.
Forty-five-year-old Chad Kohel, of Marion, is facing six charges, including strangulation and third offense drunken driving, stemming from that traffic stop July 27. The deputy pulled Kohel over, conducted a field sobriety check, then took him to a Shawano hospital for a blood draw.
Court calendars cancelled in northeast Wisconsin because of big snowstorm
Justice couldn't be served in seven northeast Wisconsin counties on Monday, because of a huge snowstorm that dropped over two feet of snow in parts of the region over the weekend.
The Wisconsin Courts System website posted a release Monday, saying circuit court calendars were canceled in Brown, Door, Kewaunee, Marinette, Oconto, Outagamie and Waupaca counties.

Two hunters die during opening deer-gun season
MONTELLO, Wis. (AP) — Two hunters have been found dead in Marquette County during opening day of the gun-deer season.
Authorities say a 57-year-old man was found with a gunshot wound in his ground blind in the Town of Newton Saturday. The Marquette County man was pronounced dead at the scene.
3 hunters shoot themselves on Wisconsin gun deer opener
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Three hunters shot and wounded themselves on the opening day of Wisconsin's gun deer season.
Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Recreational Safety Warden Mark Little says the first happened in Brown County about 5:30 a.m. Saturday. A 49-year-old man was working on his firearm when it discharged into his right ankle.
Nancy Jo (Haase) Hoffman passed away Sunday, Nov. 5, 2017, at ThedaCare Medical Center in Shawano.
Born Feb. 1, 1967, in Beaver Dam, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Jacquelyn (Hendry) Haase. On June 15, 2002, she married Gerald Hoffman in Fond du Lac. Nancy enjoyed watching TV, talking and visiting with her family and her three dogs.

Driver in crash that killed 3 pleads no contest
SHAWANO, Wis. (AP) — A man charged in a Shawano County crash that killed three teens in 2014 has pleaded no contest to charges in an agreement with prosecutors.
Twenty-year-old Ryan Swadner entered the plea to three counts of homicide while under the influence of a controlled substance and one count of causing injury while under the influence.

But the 76-year-old Connors gave money to the fund last week, anyway, despite the fact she lives 147 miles northeast of Madison.
2 killed in collision with logging truck in Shawano County
SHAWANO, Wis. (AP) — Sheriff's officials have identified the couple killed in a traffic crash with a logging truck in Shawano County.
The driver, 77-year-old Ireneo Gonzalez, and passenger, 76-year-old Soila Gonzalez, were killed when their vehicle collided with the truck in the Town of Grant Monday afternoon. The couple was from Marion.
SHAWANO — Leroy “Red” Gustav Gerondale, 92, of Shawano, passed away on Feb. 3, 2017, at Theda Care in Neenah.
He was born on Nov. 14, 1924, in Fort Atkinson, to Gustav and Esther (Markgraff) Gerondale.
Leroy served in the Army 26th Infantry Division from 1944-46.
On Feb. 22, 1947, he married Bernice Reich in Rome, Wis. She preceded him in death in 2004.
Together they owned and operated the Village Inn in Rome for 18 years.
Leroy was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Shawano.

4 charged in connection to northeastern Wisconsin burglaries
SHAWANO, Wis. (AP) — At least four people have been arrested and linked to a series of burglaries in northeastern Wisconsin, including thefts of more than 60 guns.
Elaine Lucille Sweney, 94, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2016, in Shawano.
Elaine was born on Aug. 5, 1922, in Portage to Raymond and Velma Hopwood. She enjoyed reading, politics, and board games. She also was an avid bridge player and loved spending time with her family.
SHAWANO — David Lee Murray Sr. of Shawano, formerly of Jefferson, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 16, at Thedacare Medical Center in Shawano.
He was born in Fort Atkinson on March 17, 1945, the son of Robert and Helen (Gerondale) Murray.
He attended Fort Atkinson High School.
On Nov. 26, 1966, David was united in marriage to Linda L. Free at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Jefferson.
Jury clears ex-Packers ticket broker of fraud in civil suit
SHAWANO, Wis. (AP) — A jury has cleared a Shawano businessman of fraud allegations in a lawsuit brought by Green Bay Packers fans upset that he sold their season tickets to Lambeau Field.
Jurors late Friday ruled in favor of Douglas Burris on nearly every count. The Shawano Leader (http://bit.ly/2gerOBd) reports jurors awarded the plaintiffs a combined estimated $25,000 on a couple of minor findings.
