Nemens succeeds Lorin Stein, who resigned last December amid allegations of sexual harassment. She had co-edited The Southern Review, based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, since 2013. She has also published short stories and previously worked at the Center for Architecture and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — Michigan wants the assets of a prisoner who has written a book of short stories about life behind bars.

The state filed a lawsuit against Curt Dawkins in October, seeking 90 percent of his assets, The Detroit News reported. The lawsuit points to a law that allows assets to be seized to reimburse the state for housing a prisoner.

COLDWATER, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan inmate's book that was published this summer is raising questions as to whether a prison writer should profit from tragedy.

Curt Dawkins, 49, is imprisoned for fatally shooting Tom Bowman of Kalamazoo while on drugs in 2004. He's serving life without parole at Lakeland Correctional Facility in Coldwater, the Detroit News reported .

NEW YORK (AP) — Jim Shepard, an author acclaimed for his distinctive, fact-based fiction, has won a $30,000 prize for short story writers.

Shepard is this year's recipient of the Rea Award, prize officials told The Associated Press on Monday. Established in 1986, the Rea Award is given to writers who have made a "significant contribution" to short stories. Prize judges cited Shepard's "prodigious research" into history and science and "X-ray vision of the soul."

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — In the blue-collar world of Tim Gautreaux's stories, characters get grease under their nails fixing old motors, eat gumbo and play bourre.

While much contemporary fiction focuses on the bleak side of humanity, Gautreaux's people are willing to lend a hand: A piano tuner helps a woman rebuild her life, or a retiree assists a neighbor girl with a school project.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A book of short stories titled "Forty Minutes Late" has been returned to a San Francisco library — 100 years late.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/2jOjGcm ) that Bay Area resident Webb Johnson returned the book Friday. There was no fine.

Johnson's great grandmother had checked it out from the city's old Fillmore branch in 1917. She passed away a week before the due date, and the Fillmore branch is no longer around.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Francisco Jimenez, a Mexican-American author of "The Circuit: Stories from the Life of a Migrant Child," is set to receive the John Steinbeck Award.

The book is published by University of New Mexico Press and is a collection of 12 short stories.

"The Circuit" draws from Jiménez's childhood experiences growing up in a family of Mexican migrant farmworkers.
