SHENZHEN, China (AP) — Qualifier Monica Niculescu upset fourth-seeded Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia 6-0, 6-2 in the first round of the Shenzhen Open on Tuesday.
The 99th-ranked Niculescu swept past the 2017 French Open champion in 51 minutes with Ostapenko winning only four points in the first set.
"I came here early, and actually I didn't spend Christmas at home, I spent it on the plane," Niculescu said.
"But that suits (me) well ... I thought I really played well on Center Court."
MADRID (AP) — Two-time defending champion Simona Halep brushed aside Ekaterina Makarova 6-1, 6-0 in the first round of the Madrid Open on Sunday.
Top-seeded Halep recorded her 13th consecutive victory on Madrid's clay courts.
"I was moving great. I felt the game, I like to play on this court," Halep said. "Always when I come back here, I feel a little bit more relaxed, so maybe that's why I can touch my best level every time I play."
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Top-seeded defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland beat eighth-seeded Shuai Peng of China 7-5, 6-3 on Thursday night to reach the Connecticut Open semifinals.
"She's definitely a tough opponent," Radwanska said. "I've played her a few times before so I knew what I had to do. I really pushed myself even more than 100 percent today."
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Second-seeded Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia rallied to beat Alize Cornet of France 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 on Wednesday night to reach the Connecticut Open quarterfinals.
Cibulkova will face sixth-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia on Thursday in the U.S. Open tuneup event at The Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale. Pavlyuchenkova beat Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro 7-6 (3), 6-0.
STRASBOURG, France (AP) — Defending champion Caroline Garcia of France survived an early scare to beat Kristyna Pliskova in straight sets on Thursday and reach the semifinals of the Strasbourg International.
The fifth-seeded Garcia fought back from a double-break down at 5-1 and saved six set points on her way to a 7-6 (3), 6-2 victory.
Garcia will next face Daria Gavrilova after she beat fellow Australian Ashleigh Barty 6-4, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (5).
