Grand jury finds no crime involved in death of jail inmate
OSHKOSH, Neb. (AP) — A grand jury has determined that no crime was committed by anyone in the death of a jail inmate in western Nebraska.
The jury met to investigate the Sept. 18 death of 37-year-old Candy Flood, of Sidney, at the Garden County Jail in Oshkosh. Flood was being housed there for Cheyenne County after being arrested on suspicion of disturbing the peace.
Former Cabela’s employees launch online retail site
SIDNEY, Neb. (AP) — A new online retailer of outdoors gear has opened for business, owned and operated by former Cabela's employees.
Highby Outdoors launched its website Monday and is based in Sidney, the home of Cabela's before being purchased by Bass Pro Shops in a $4 billion deal finalized in September 2017.

Man hurt in jail fight dies; charges expected for 2nd inmate
SIDNEY, Ohio (AP) — A coroner says an inmate hurt in a fight at an Ohio jail died a day later at a hospital.
The Dayton Daily News reports the Montgomery County Coroner's Office hasn't ruled on what caused the Saturday death of 54-year-old James Richards.
The Shelby County Sheriff's Office says the Sidney man was punched by another inmate at the Shelby County jail.

Canadian company makes deal to buy a Cabela’s building
SIDNEY, Neb. (AP) — A Canadian company has made a deal with Bass Pro Shops to buy one of Cabela's corporate buildings in Sidney — a deal that could provide 150 or more local jobs.
The sales price and other financial details about the MMP Enterprises purchase have not been released. MMP is a logistics management company based in Toronto.

OSHKOSH, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska State Patrol says it's investigating the death of a woman being held in western Nebraska's Garden County Jail.
2 new police dogs join Nebraska State Patrol K9 unit
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska State Patrol has announced the addition of two K9s to the agency following months of training for the dogs. And one has already helped track down a large haul of illegal drugs.
Koda, a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois, is stationed in Norfolk in northeastern Nebraska. Earlier in July, Koda helped find 141 pounds of marijuana in a vehicle.
Amos, a 15-month-old Dutch Shepherd, is stationed in Sidney in southwestern Nebraska.
Man found guilty in fatal Ohio Amish buggy crash
SIDNEY, Ohio (AP) — A man who struck an Amish buggy from behind, killing a woman and injuring three of her family members, has been found guilty of aggravated vehicular homicide in Ohio.
Court records show 43-year-old Steven Hunter pleaded no contest to charges Friday in western Ohio's Shelby County.
Shelby County Prosecutor Tim Sell told the Sidney Daily News that Hunter was drunk and high on marijuana when he drove his SUV into the buggy in April.
SIDNEY, Neb. (AP) — Two Colorado residents have been accused of counterfeiting money in western Nebraska.
The Nebraska State Patrol says 32-year-old Christopher Humphries, of Denver, and 31-year-old Jaclyn Greer-Humphries, of Fort Collins, were arrested July 5 after officers searched their residence in Sidney. The patrol says investigators found counterfeit money and items being used to make the fake cash.
SIDNEY, Iowa (AP) — A man who led officers on a chase from eastern Nebraska into western Iowa has been sentenced to 30 years in prison on several Iowa charges.
Fremont County District Court records show 28-year-old William Stanfill III pleaded guilty July 2 to two counts of assault on an officer, eluding, criminal mischief and two weapons charges. Prosecutors dropped two counts of attempted murder in exchange for Stanfill's pleas.

Driver held on $150,000 bond in fatal Amish buggy crash
SIDNEY, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio driver accused of hitting an Amish buggy in a crash that killed a woman and critically hurt a man and two young children has been jailed on charges including aggravated vehicular homicide.
Steven Hunter, of Sidney, also is charged with failing to stop after the Friday night crash in Shelby County.
A judge on Monday set Hunter's bond at $150,000. Hunter's public defender hasn't returned a message seeking comment.
SIDNEY, Ohio (AP) — Authorities say an Amish buggy has been struck from behind in Ohio, killing a woman and critically injuring a man and two infants.
The Springfield News-Sun reports the Shelby County Sheriff's Office says the buggy was properly lit when it was struck around 9 p.m. Friday. Sidney is about 75 miles northwest of Columbus.
Cheyenne County authorities are investigating the deaths of two Lodgepole residents as a homicides.

Scottsbluff, Sidney nursing homes among 21 placed in receivership after company misses payroll
LINCOLN — State officials scrambled Friday to put a receiver in charge of 21 nursing facilities across Nebraska after the owner failed to make payroll.
The facilities are owned by Cottonwood Healthcare, known as Skyline, based in Wood Ridge, New Jersey.
The company was founded in 2016 and took over a number of nursing homes and assisted living facilities that had been previously operated by Golden Living.
Nearly 700 Cabela’s employees in Sidney volunteer for buyouts; 300 will leave this week
About 300 Cabela’s employees in Sidney have taken Bass Pro’s buyout offer as the outdoors retailer winds down the headquarters operation in Nebraska. They will leave the company this week.
Nearly 400 more Cabela’s workers also “volunteered to exit,” Bass Pro said Thursday, but the company is postponing any action on those people until it determines its needs and what opportunities could be available in Sidney or elsewhere.
SIDNEY, Neb. (AP) — About 300 employees at Cabela's former headquarters in western Nebraska are taking buyouts this week, and afterward, the remaining operation in Sidney will be a fraction of the size it was before rival Bass Pro Shops bought the company.
Another 390 former Cabela's employees also applied for buyouts, but no immediate action will be taken on those. Bass Pro spokesman Jack Wlezian said that after the cuts about 500 employees will remain in Sidney.
Typically, an Eastern Nebraska-Panhandle matchup in the Class B state basketball tournament can offer the unknown. Maybe some uneasy energy, too.
There's a lot of miles between the schools in the west — like the Alliances, Scottsbluffs and Sidneys — and the schools in the east. Rarely do the two sides of the state meet until the state tournament, when the stakes are at their highest.
Authorities: Body of 6-year-old boy swept into creek found
SIDNEY, Ohio (AP) — Authorities say the body of a 6-year-old boy reportedly swept away in a western Ohio creek has been recovered.
Shelby County sheriff's deputies say the body was found in the creek Monday about two miles from where the boy disappeared Sunday. Authorities didn't immediately release the child's name.

Woman accused of sex assault on teen boy gets 3 years
SIDNEY, Neb. (AP) — A Sidney woman accused of sexually assaulting a teenage boy has been given three years in prison.
Court records show 30-year-old Jennifer McKinsey was sentenced Wednesday in Cheyenne County District Court and credited for 77 days already served.
She'd pleaded no contest to intentional child abuse after prosecutors lowered the charge from sexual assault of a minor.
