MADRID (AP) — Simon Yates won his first Grand Tour title after a largely ceremonial ride into Madrid in the final stage of the Spanish Vuelta on Sunday, giving British riders a sweep of the season's three biggest races.
The 26-year-old Englishman was dominant throughout the three-week race across Spain, thriving on the toughest climbs and the flattest routes to secure the victory after a last stage in which riders didn't attack the leaders under cycling tradition.
Simon Yates protects lead, poised to win Spanish Vuelta
SANTUARIO DE CANOLICH, Andorra (AP) — English rider Simon Yates is poised to win his first Grand Tour title after he successfully defended his lead in the Spanish Vuelta through Saturday's 20th stage.
Yates will take his advantage of 1 minute, 46 seconds, over Enric Mas into the final stage, when race custom dictates the riders don't attack the race leaders on the traditional arrival to Madrid.

Yates increases Spanish Vuelta lead ahead of final stages
SANT JULIA DE LORIA, Andorra (AP) — Simon Yates moved closer to winning the Spanish Vuelta for the first time after gaining more than a minute on Alejandro Valverde in Friday's 19th stage, which was won by Thibaut Pinot.
Pinot outlasted Yates at the end of the final climb in the tiny nation of Andorra, crossing the line five seconds ahead of the British rider for his second stage win in this year's Vuelta. Valverde finished eighth, more than a minute behind.
Wallays wins Vuelta stage, Yates leads before decisive tests
LLEIDA, Spain (AP) — Jelle Wallays won the Spanish Vuelta's flat 18th stage on Thursday, while Simon Yates held on to the overall lead ahead of two decisive days in the Pyrenees.
Wallays produced a long breakaway attack before edging out Sven Erik Bystrom and world champion Peter Sagan to win the 186-kilometer (116-mile) leg from Ejea de los Caballeros to Lleida in just under four hours.

Dennis dominated the 32-kilometer (19.8-mile) stage with a time of 37 minutes, 57 seconds, nearly a minute faster than his closest competitors, Joseph Rosskopf and Jonathan Castroviejo.

SABERO, Spain (AP) — Simon Yates cut in half Jesus Herrada's Spanish Vuelta lead in a 13th stage won by Oscar Rodriguez on Friday.
Rodriguez dominated the difficult climb up La Camperona to clinch the victory in the 175-kilometer (109-mile) stage from Carreno to Sabero in northwestern Spain.
The Spaniard broke away in the final kilometer to cross the line 19 seconds in front of Rafal Majka and 30 seconds ahead of Dylan Teuns.
De Marchi wins longest stage of Spanish Vuelta

King stayed ahead of chaser Bauke Mollema on a long breakaway to win the 201-kilometer (125-mile) leg in 5 ½ hours, starting in Talavera de la Reina that crested three categorized passes before the final uphill push.
Tour de France champ Thomas selected for world championships
LONDON (AP) — Tour de France champion Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome have been included in the British squad for next month's road world championships.
The Team Sky riders were selected for both the time trial and the road race in Innsbruck, Austria, from Sept. 23-30. The road race squad also includes twins Adam and Simon Yates.
PRATO NEVOSO, Italy (AP) — Simon Yates remained in the lead of the Giro d'Italia but the British rider's advantage over closest rival Tom Dumoulin was slashed in half after the tough 18th stage on Thursday.

The Italian won a bunch sprint through rain at the end of the hilly, 155-kilometer ride from Riva del Garda to Iseo, holding up four fingers as he crossed the line.

ROVERETO, Italy (AP) — Simon Yates is still in control of the Giro d'Italia after the British rider limited his losses to closest rival Tom Dumoulin in the individual time trial on Tuesday.
Dumoulin was more than two minutes behind Yates heading into the 16th stage and, as a time trial specialist, it was seen as his best chance of taking the pink jersey from the Mitchelton-Scott cyclist.
However, Yates still leads Dumoulin by 56 seconds heading into the final five stages.
As the Giro d'Italia heads into the final week, it's not really surprising that a British rider leads the overall standings.
The surprise is that the leader is Simon Yates and not four-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome.
Froome arrived at the Giro bidding to become the third person to win three Grand Tours in a row. But he crashed in training before the opening time trial, lost time in a split on Stage 4 and injured himself again in a second crash four days later.
