Toby Keith to open new 8,500-seat amphitheater in Sparks
SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — The company that owns the Nugget Casino Resort in Sparks says a new 8,500-seat amphitheater it's building across the street from the hotel-casino will be open in time to host a concert by country singer Toby Keith in June.
Marnell Gaming announced Tuesday that Keith will perform the first act in the new events center June 15 on the former site of the Bourbon Square casino just north of Interstate 80.
The Sparks Planning Commission approved the plans for the amphitheater Jan. 3.
2 drown, 1 survives Topaz Lake boat accident at NV-CA line
MINDEN, Nev. (AP) — A search rescue team has recovered the bodies of two Sparks men from Topaz Lake near the California-Nevada line after they apparently drowned over the weekend in a boating accident.
A third man was treated and released at Carson Valley Medical Center after the boat capsized on Saturday in the lake in southern Douglas County.
The victims were identified as 45-year-old Bert Pederson and 50-year-old Jesse Gregory, both of Sparks. Scott Wise survived.
Sparks Mayor Ron Smith battling pancreatic cancer

He says he may miss a few meetings and events, but that the disease was caught early and that both he and his doctors are "very positive" he will respond well to treatment.
Smith was sworn in as Sparks' 25th mayor in early November. He succeeded Mayor Geno Martini, the city's longest serving mayor.

Police said Monday they arrested 29-year-old Alexis Alegria on Friday. She was booked into the Washoe County Jail on suspicion of two counts of open murder.

Authorities investigate cause of fatal Sparks house fire
SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — Authorities are investigating the cause of a fatal house fire in Sparks.
Flames and smoke were pouring from the house when firefighters arrived about 9:50 a.m. Thursday at the two-story residence in east Sparks near the Northern Nevada Medical Center.
One person was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. But firefighters were unable to search the home thoroughly because the fire had severely damaged its structural integrity.

SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — Police have arrested a 27-year-old suspect in a Northern California homicide after he allegedly fired multiple gunshots through the windows of a northern Nevada convenience store.
Anthony Bradley was being held in the Washoe County Jail in Reno Monday on $100,000 bail on a fugitive warrant. He also was booked on suspicion of six counts of assault with a deadly weapon, robbery, felon in possession of a firearm and discharging a gun at an occupied building.
Body pulled from Lahontan Reservoir was missing Sparks man
SILVER SPRINGS, Nev. (AP) — A body found in the Lahontan Reservoir has been identified as a Sparks man who'd been missing for nearly a year.
Churchill County Sheriff Ben Trotter says 77-year-old Antonio Garcia-Armendarz's decomposed body and pickup truck were pulled from the manmade lake Aug. 31 near Silver Springs south of Fernley.
Trotter says someone noticed the submerged vehicle at the end of the boat ramp near the Carson Highway when the water level began to drop during the summer.
Med tech company bringing 200 jobs, $40M facility to Sparks
SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — A California-based medical device company has announced plans to move its U.S. operations from the San Francisco Bay area to a facility in northern Nevada that's expected to bring 200 jobs to the Reno-Sparks area.
New Deantronics announced Tuesday it plans to invest more than $40 million building the 200,000-square-foot facility at the Spanish Springs Business Center in Sparks. It's expected to open in 2020.

Video surveillance captured him concealing the money and box on his person before he walked out.
Sparks man, 68, died in motorcycle-school bus crash
SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — Authorities have identified the motorcyclist who was killed in a crash with a school bus on the north edge of Sparks.
The Washoe County sheriff's office said Tuesday 68-year-old Robert Martin of Sparks was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after colliding with the bus Monday morning.
No children were on the bus and the bus driver wasn't hurt in the accident in Spanish Springs near the intersection of the Pyramid Highway and La Posada at about 8:30 a.m.

The girl says a man with a handgun got into her vehicle shortly after 9:00 p.m. Saturday in Sparks and demanded she drive him to south Reno. The girl complied, and was able to return home unharmed after dropping the man off.
