Court rejects appeal from British woman on Texas death row
HOUSTON (AP) — Texas' highest criminal court on Wednesday rejected the appeal of a condemned British national who was convicted of arranging the killing of a neighbor so she could take the woman's baby.
The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals upheld the ruling of a lower court, which rejected Linda Carty's arguments that prosecutors had coerced witnesses and improperly hidden information that could have affected the outcome of her capital murder trial.
Hurricane Irma hit Barbuda early Wednesday, thrashing it with high winds as it marched on to other islands along its path on the Caribbean.
The massive Category 5 storm packed winds of up to 185 mph, the US National Hurricane Center said. It aimed at several islands, including Puerto Rico, Antigua, St. Kitts and Nevis, and the US Virgin Islands.

Caribbean nation reviews Springfield lab’s herpes test
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — A health official of a Caribbean nation is investigating a test on a genital herpes vaccine conducted by a Springfield-based company.
Dr. Hazel Laws is chief medical officer of the nation of St. Kitts and Nevis. She confirmed to The (Springfield) State Journal-Register that she is conducting a review of the test by Rational Vaccines.
Caribbean islands begin preparations for Hurricane Irma
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Islands at the eastern end of the Caribbean Sea made preparations Sunday for approaching Hurricane Irma, a Category 3 storm that could threaten the area beginning Tuesday.
Hurricane watches were posted for Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, Monserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Martin, Guadeloupe and the British Virgin Islands.
