Steve Fisher gets warm welcome at Michigan with 1989 team
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Steve Fisher was given a warm welcome back at Michigan on Sunday, returning to be honored with the 1989 national championship team he led as interim coach. He acknowledged...
Dutcher, SDSU stir up MWC by beating Musselman’s Wolf Pack
SAN DIEGO (AP) — A couple of coaches' sons have a pretty good rivalry going on in the Mountain West Conference, and so far, Brian Dutcher's San Diego State Aztecs have dominated Eric Musselman's...
With McDaniels back, expectations high again for Aztecs
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Expectations are high once again at San Diego State, thanks to a remarkable run to the NCAA Tournament and Jalen McDaniels' decision to return for his redshirt sophomore season.
Although the Aztecs are the decided second choice behind No. 7 Nevada to win the Mountain West Conference regular-season title, they showed last year they can play well when they're focused.
SDSU extends coach Brian Dutcher’s contract through 2022-23
SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego State coach Brian Dutcher has signed a one-year contract extension through the 2022-23 season.
The extension announced Wednesday comes five months after Dutcher, in his first season in charge, led the Aztecs back to the NCAA Tournament after a two-year absence. The Aztecs, who also won their 11th Mountain West Conference title, finished 22-11.
With their surprising run this season, Michigan is making its eighth trip to the Final Four in school history. While only one of those finished with a national championship, many of them were unanticipated runs.
The title team of 1989 started the NCAA Tournament with some turmoil, as head coach Bill Frieder opted to take the coaching job at Arizona State, opening the door for interim coach Steve Fisher to lead that team to the national title.
Michigan ready for Houston in West Region’s second round
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — No. 3 seed Michigan (29-7) vs. No. 6 Houston (27-7)
Second round, Midwest Region; Wichita, Kansas, Saturday, 9:40 p.m. ET.
BOTTOM LINE: The Wolverines, who plodded through an ugly win over Montana in the opening round, will try to advance to their fourth Sweet 16 under John Beilein when they face Houston. That would tie Beilein with Steve Fisher for the most in school history.
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — John Beilein believes it's time for Steve Fisher to assume his rightful place in Michigan lore.
It was Fisher who led the Wolverines to the 1989 national championship, then brought together the Fab Five for two more runs to the title game before becoming persona non grata around the school's Ann Arbor campus following a scandal that led to his firing more than two decades ago.
First-time NCAA Tournament head coaches leading 15 teams
Fifteen teams are being led by first-time NCAA Tournament head coaches. All but one is a double-digit seed, so let's just say a run to the championship is improbable.
Just don't say impossible.
Kevin Ollie's seventh-seeded UConn team won the 2014 title in his first tournament as a head coach. The previous coach to win it all as a newbie was Steve Fisher, who was promoted at Michigan in 1989 after Bill Frieder was famously fired after he agreed to take another job following the season.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Four weeks ago, when San Diego State was 13-10 and in eighth place in the Mountain West Conference, even a berth in the NIT seemed farfetched in the Aztecs' first season under coach Brian Dutcher.
There were rumblings that maybe Dutcher hadn't been the right guy to replace Steve Fisher, even though the longtime loyal lieutenant had been the "head coach in waiting" since 2011.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Going to the NCAA Tournament used to be almost a birthright at San Diego State, starting with Kawhi Leonard's freshman season.
SDSU made it to six straight NCAA tourneys, including its first two Sweet 16 appearances.
Then it stopped.
Two years removed from their last go-round with March Madness, the Aztecs need to win the Mountain West Conference tournament this week in order to secure a bid in Brian Dutcher's first year as coach.
Kell, McDaniels lead SDSU to 72-70 upset of No. 12 Gonzaga
SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego State got the signature win so far in the Brian Dutcher era when senior Trey Kell and redshirt freshman Jalen McDaniels came up big in the second half of a 72-70 upset of No. 12 Gonzaga on Thursday night.
Kell scored 10 of his 14 points in the final 2:56 and McDaniels scored 10 of his 15 points in the second half and had 10 rebounds, which overcame poor shooting and benefited from 16 Zags turnovers
The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame could have a decided Michigan flavor.
Several players and coaches with local ties are nominees for the Hall of Fame, announced Thursday, and could be enshrined in the Class of 2018.
Nash, Kidd, Hill, Allen eligible for basketball Hall of Fame
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash, fellow star point guard Jason Kidd, Grant Hill and Ray Allen are among six first-year candidates for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
The Detroit Pistons backcourt of Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton also became eligible after the Hall changed its rules to allow players to reach the ballot after three years of retirement.
SDSU gets easy win in Dutcher’s first game as head coach
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Brian Dutcher was pretty low-key after his first game — and win — as a head coach.
Maybe because it was such an easy win, 91-52 against outmanned San Diego Christian, an NAIA team that doesn't have its own gym.
Or maybe it was because he's simply seen a lot of basketball, mostly spent at Steve Fisher's side.
Dutcher takes over SDSU program he helped Fisher build
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Brian Dutcher finally gets to move over one seat on San Diego State's bench.
He spent 18 years as assistant to Aztecs basketball coach Steve Fisher, the last six with the "head coach in waiting" designation. He's waiting no longer after Fisher retired in April.
There was a time when Dutcher could have moved on to another program, but the "head coach in waiting" showed he was serious about eventually succeeding Fisher, whom he'd been with since 1989 at Michigan.
Wyoming announces Mountain West basketball schedule
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — The Wyoming 2017-18 Mountain West Conference men's basketball schedule features nine home contests and nine on the road.
The league schedule was released Tuesday.
Highlighting the Cowboys' conference home schedule will the annual Border War with Colorado State on Saturday, Jan. 13. Wyoming will also host defending conference champion Nevada on Wednesday, Jan. 24.
Steve Fisher is retiring from a basketball coaching career that includes a national championship at Michigan, directing the Fab Five and then turning San Diego State from a laughingstock into a West Coast power. Two people with knowledge of the situation say that the 72-year-old is retiring after 18 seasons at SDSU. The school has scheduled a news conference for today.
Steve Fisher retires: ‘San Diego State is my legacy’
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Steve Fisher will always be the "Michigan man" who was promoted to head coach on the eve of the 1989 NCAA Tournament and led the Wolverines to the national title.
He coached the Fab Five.
And then he went off and did something few people thought was possible. He put San Diego State on the college basketball map.
Fisher announced his retirement from coaching Tuesday after spending 18 seasons at SDSU, which he turned from a laughingstock into a West Coast power.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Steve Fisher is retiring from a basketball coaching career that includes a national championship at Michigan, directing the Fab Five and then turning San Diego State from a laughingstock into a West Coast power.
Two people with knowledge of the situation said Monday that Fisher, 72, is retiring after 18 seasons at SDSU.
The people spoke on condition of anonymity because Fisher's decision hasn't been announced by the school.
The school scheduled a news conference for Tuesday.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Steve Fisher's San Diego State Aztecs aren't used to being in this position.
Here they are though, having won only 17 games and being forced into a play-in game in the Mountain West Conference Tournament after finishing just sixth in the regular-season standings.
It was a jarring drop-off for SDSU, which had won or shared the last three regular-season titles.
Shrigley, Kell lead SDSU to 51-38 win vs Air Force
SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego State coach Steve Fisher chose to accent the positives for his Aztecs on Wednesday night.
There weren't many, other than the Aztecs beating Air Force 51-38 on Senior Night in a matchup of horrible-shooting teams.
That means the Aztecs are on track to earn the No. 5 seed for the Mountain West Conference tournament and avoid a play-in game on Wednesday if they can beat New Mexico on the road on Saturday night.
Return of Pope boosts SDSU to 74-55 win vs Utah State
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Malik Pope was back with San Diego State for the first time since Dec. 22, giving the Aztecs the kind of boost they'll need the rest of the season.
Sidelined for six games with a knee injury, the 6-10 junior forward played a solid 23 minutes to help the Aztecs beat Utah State 74-55 Saturday night. He had nine points and five rebounds, while Matt Shrigley and Jeremy Hemsley scored 14 points apiece and Trey Kell had 12.
Pope scores 16, SDSU breezes to 73-41 win vs Alabama State
SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego State Aztecs didn't pay much attention to Alabama State's record.
They just knew that a fourth straight loss would have been nightmarish for a program not used to faltering badly.
Malik Pope scored 16 points and the San Diego State Aztecs breezed to a 73-41 victory against the Hornets on Monday night to snap a three-game losing streak.
The Aztecs (5-4) needed a laugher after losing at Loyola and Grand Canyon, and at home to Arizona State.
The Menzies Effect planting roots at UNLV
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Marvin Menzies leaned in to the group and, intimating there was more of the story that could be told, asked with a laugh: "You want the off-the-record-version or the real version?"
One reporter was working on a story, so on the record it was.
UNLV's first-year coach spent the next few minutes inside a Las Vegas hotel conference room describing the ruse he used to help convince San Diego State coach Steve Fisher to hire him as an assistant.
Cheatham, Shrigley lead Aztecs to 100-67 victory vs Tigers
SAN DIEGO (AP) — With San Diego State leading Savannah State 99-65 with a minute left, the Aztecs' student section started chanting "One more point!"
They got it when Valentine Izundu made the front end of a one-and-one with 46 seconds left to finish off a 100-67 victory.
"We did what we were supposed to do and we did it in nice fashion," San Diego State coach Steve Fisher said.
Hemsley scores 15, San Diego State beats Cal, 77-65
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Leading California by 18 points midway through the second half, San Diego State's Jeremy Hemsley thought he and his teammates became a little complacent.
Coach Steve Fisher didn't see it that way and was more focused on the outcome — a big win for the Aztecs, one week after they got blown out by 14th-ranked Gonzaga.
The San Diego State Aztecs are the prohibitive preseason favorite in the Mountain West and just outside the Top 25 and regarded as one of the nation’s deepest teams, with 13 players who can make legitimate claims for playing time.
They open the season Friday night at Viejas Arena with seven, possibly eight, healthy scholarship players.
“We’ve never had this many injuries at the same time,” said Coach Steve Fisher, who begins his 18th season at SDSU.
Hemsley, Kell, lead Aztecs to 69-59 win against Toreros
SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego State Aztecs probably didn't need any more reminders about their embarrassing loss to cross-town rival San Diego last year at Petco Park, home of baseball's Padres.
Coach Steve Fisher gave them one anyway. Before leaving the locker room for Friday night's season-opener against USD, Fisher showed his players the cover of the Toreros' media guide, which features a photo of Brett Bailey celebrating his emphatic dunk with 1.1 seconds left in USD's stunning 53-48 win.
