Republican Guest joins Mississippi congressional delegation
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi's newest member of Congress, Republican Rep. Michael Guest, says he will "uphold the morals and values" of his community, state and nation.
Guest said in a speech in Washington that he will "remain humble," take his responsibilities seriously and "represent the people of Mississippi in a way that brings honor and glory to our Heavenly Father."
Mississippi lawmakers announce $930M contract for shipyard
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Lawmakers say a Mississippi shipyard has been awarded a $930.8 million contract to build the 10th and 11th U.S. Coast Guard National Security Cutters.
U.S. Sens. Cindy Hyde-Smith and Roger Wicker and U.S. Rep. Steven Palazzo, in a news release, said the U.S. Department of Homeland Security contract award to Huntington Ingalls in Pascagoula has a total potential value of $1.7 billion.
Mississippi’s 3rd District stays GOP, incumbents win
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi saw its highest federal midterm voter turnout ever on Tuesday.
More than 880,000 Mississippians cast ballots in the special U.S. Senate election that resulted in a Nov. 27 runoff between Democrat Mike Espy and Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith, according to unofficial results compiled by The Associated Press. Thousands of provisional ballots are likely to be added to totals before counties certify elections to the Secretary of State next week.
Democratic youth meets GOP experience in Mississippi race
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Incumbent U.S. Rep. Steven Palazzo says he's building experience that will benefit south Mississippi's 4th Congressional district, warning that "You can't just come in and light the world on fire" in Congress.
But that's exactly what Democratic challenger and state Rep. Jeramey Anderson of Moss Point is trying to do.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — The federal government is providing $7.3 million to build safe rooms where people can gather during severe weather.
The eight rooms will be built in south Mississippi's Forrest County. Four will be in Petal, three in Hattiesburg and one in Brooklyn.
The rooms will be designed to withstand winds of up to 200 mph (322 kph).
GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi Gulf Coast city is receiving a $2.6 million federal grant to construct a pedestrian and bus bridge over a major highway.
The Federal Transit Administration announced the grant Thursday. It will partially pay for the projected $9.8 million cost of the bridge in Gulfport.
Marine agency to get new leader as current boss shifts
BILOXI, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi's Department of Marine Resources will get a new leader Dec. 20, as the current executive director shifts to the state economic development agency.
Gov. Phil Bryant said Wednesday that he was naming Joe Spraggins, the department's chief operations officer since 2013, as its executive director.
Democratic state lawmaker says he’s running for Congress
MOSS POINT, Miss. (AP) — A Democratic member of the Mississippi Legislature says he's running for the U.S. House.
Rep. Jeramey Anderson of Moss Point said Friday he will seek his party's nomination next year in south Mississippi's 4th Congressional District.
Republican Steven Palazzo won the 4th District seat in 2010, and is preparing to seek another two-year term.
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A Texas congressman said a gunman first fired shots at Mississippi Rep. Trent Kelly and missed before shooting a Louisiana congressman while the Republicans practiced for a charity baseball game in a Washington suburb.
Rep. Joe Barton of Texas was at the practice Wednesday morning and witnessed the shootings that wounded Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise and several others in Alexandria, Virginia.
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi's entire congressional delegation is supporting a request for federal disaster aid after an outbreak of tornadoes.
Gov. Phil Bryant submitted the request to President Donald Trump last week.
Twenty-nine tornadoes were confirmed to have hit the state April 30. One man died, and 20 counties reported damage.
Spokesman: Palazzo fulfilled military drill requirements
BILOXI, Miss. (AP) — A retired officer says a Mississippi congressman frequently missed National Guard drills, but a spokesman for U.S. Rep. Steven Palazzo says he completed the drill requirements away from his unit.
Multiple news organizations report that retired Staff Sgt. Rolan Wade appeared Monday at a news conference with Ric McCluskey, a Libertarian candidate who's one of three candidates challenging Republican Palazzo in the Nov. 8 election.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Several top Republicans in Mississippi are standing by presidential nominee Donald Trump as he denies accusations that he groped and kissed some women against their will.
Republican Gov. Phil Bryant and U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker both say they want a Republican president to make the next nominations to the U.S. Supreme Court.
U.S. Rep. Steven Palazzo says that electing Trump and keeping a Republican-controlled House will block "the worst parts of the liberal agenda."
