Review: ‘High Flying Bird’ is an exhilarating fast break
Straight, "no chaser" is how NBA agent Ray Burke (Andre Holland) likes his news in "High Flying Bird," and the same could be said for the cinematic preferences of director Steven Soderbergh, whose...
At Oscar nominees luncheon, a pitch for brevity
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — Winners at this year's Oscars will need to be quick, both in their walks to the stage and their acceptance speeches.
Steven Soderbergh's "Ocean's Eleven" remake is a hard movie to live up to. Its starry charm was backed by a breezy and deceptively dense script full of memorable characters, dizzyingly complex logistics and lively filmmaking that Soderbergh himself couldn't even recreate in the two sequels. But it is undeniable that even the near-perfect "Eleven" was missing something pretty major: Women. You know, besides Julia Roberts, that blackjack dealer and the one exotic dancer.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Oscar-winning film editor Anne V. Coates, widely considered one of the greatest in her field whose many credits include such disparate works as "Lawrence of Arabia," ''The Elephant Man" and "Fifty Shades of Grey," has died. She was 92.
A representative from Coates' talent agency WME Entertainment said Wednesday that she passed away Tuesday at the Motion Picture Country Home and Hospital in Woodland Hills, California.
Benicio del Toro is to preside over the jury of Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival.
The 51-year-old actor - who previously served on the festival's competition jury in 2010 - has succeeded Uma Thurman in presiding over the jury, which awards the coveted accolades.
del Toro already has a strong association with the event, having won the Best Actor gong in Cannes for his performance as Che Guevara in Steven Soderbergh's 'Che'.
Mindy Kaling is "so proud" of 'Ocean's 8'.
The 38-year-old actress stars as Amita in the all-female spin-off to the 'Ocean's' trilogy and, although she has only seen a "cut of it", Kaling has said it is "fantastic" and said it's a movie people will "want to see".
In an interview with Collider, Kaling said: "I saw a cut of it and it's so good! I'm so proud of it. If you know the names of the people in the cast and you know a little bit about the premise, it's a movie you'll want to see.
Steven Soderbergh is a prolific producer, but his directorial resume is quite impressive as well — from “Ocean’s Eleven” to his more recent film “Logan Lucky,” which, unfortunately, flew under the radar with both critics and viewers.
Claire Foy of 'The Crown' stars in Steven Soderbergh's smart thriller
The latest chapter in a long, winding and always interesting career, Steven Soderbergh's "Unsane" is an unnerving psychological thriller with classic B-movie DNA.
You’re never sure what the prolific, ever-rebellious Steven Soderbergh is going to do next. But from “Sex, Lies and Videotape” to “Erin Brockovich” to the “Ocean’s Eleven” franchise, you know it’s going to be different.
Movie Minute: 'Pacific Rim: Uprising' looks to dethrone 'Black Panther'
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Could "Pacific Rim: Uprising" be the film that ends King T'Challa's reign at the box office?
The sci-fi sequel starring John Boyega ("Star Wars: The Last Jedi") is on track for an opening weekend of $22-29 million. That could be enough to remove "Black Panther" from its perch atop the charts for the first time in five weeks.
Steven Soderbergh, who briefly retired from Hollywood after lamenting its timid small-mindedness, has shot his second post-hiatus film entirely on an iPhone.
"Unsane," a pulpy psychological thriller, is an exercise in both genre and technology. It's a B-movie iMovie. And it's 98 minutes of proof that the laborious apparatus of filmmaking can be not only light on its feet, but fit snuggly inside your pocket.
Soderbergh: ‘I’m a better filmmaker than five years ago’
Sharon Stone had a "five per cent chance" of living when she was struck by a brain haemorrhage.
The 59-year-old actress had to re-learn "everything" when her life was "wiped out" as a result of the ruptured blood vessel in 2001, and she believes work dried up following her recovery because she was considered to be a "broken person".
Whether you stream, buy or rent, here’s a look at what’s new or notable in home video. Movies are available on streaming sites such as iTunes, Amazon and Vudu unless otherwise noted.

A person could spend years and even decades waiting for a Western as immersive and satisfying as Godless, Scott Frank's seven-part drama for Netflix. True to the genre in almost every way (and yet refreshingly modern in providing strong, vital roles for women), it plays like a seven-hour film without wasting a glorious, gritty, panoramic minute. And as a bonus, not a single character is one of Westworld's subservient cyborgs. This here's the real McCoy.
Box Office Top 20: ‘Hitman’s Bodyguard’ wins slow Labor Day
LOS ANGELES (AP) — "The Hitman's Bodyguard" once again reigned over a slow weekend at the box office, topping the charts for a third weekend with $10.5 million. With no major releases across the Labor Day holiday weekend, holdovers populated the top five, with the horror pic "Annabelle: Creation" in second with $7.5 million.

Box Office Top 20: ‘The Hitman’s Bodyguard’ hits No. 1
LOS ANGELES (AP) — "The Hitman's Bodyguard" stole the weekend from the heist pic "Logan Lucky." Starring Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds, "The Hitman's Bodyguard" opened to $21.4 million, easily topping the weekend which continued the downward spiral of the summer movie season compared to last year.
LeAnn Rimes has admitted singing 'American Beautiful' on 'Logan Lucky' was the "easiest thing" she's ever done.
The 34-year-old star was asked to perform the hit song on the film after director Steven Soderbergh watched her sing the US national anthem at the Indy 500 motorsport event at Speedway, Indiana in May 2014 - and she only needed to belt out the track twice on the set.
As observed in a line from the film, “Logan Lucky” is “Ocean’s 7-Eleven.” But it’s also a lot of fun and a throwback to the “Thunderbolt and Lightfoot” era of quirky American crime caper films grounded in genuine economic hardship.
When Steven Soderbergh announced his retirement from feature films with the release of "Side Effects," it became an instant cliché to say that he picked a good way to go out. Now, four years later, Soderbergh is back with "Logan Lucky," but it's not a happy return. It's his weakest film in years and one of his least characteristic.
"Populist Pictures" reads the buzzer to Steven Soderbergh's Tribeca office. You might easily mistake it as ironic. It's a grand title for a little nameplate on an otherwise nondescript Manhattan building.

Unretired, Soderbergh wants to pull a fast one on Hollywood

Ah, August. It’s that time of year when you can head to your local multiplex to see Matthew McConaughey as an interplanetary David Copperfield who’s trying to use his “magics” to destroy a looming tower that protects the universe from ready-to-invade hordes of demons that linger just outside the universe. So, I guess, pretty far out there in space.

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — Steven Soderbergh was never a big NASCAR fan despite growing up in the South.
But the Academy Award winning director has become one after working on his new film "Logan Lucky," depicting a theoretical heist at Charlotte Motor Speedway during the Coca-Cola 600.
