Toxic vapor tests lag at thousands of sites in Michigan
STURGIS, Mich. (AP) — Health and environmental regulators across Michigan are playing catch-up with industrial chemicals that remain in the ground or water long after initially being discovered.
The state has a list of more than 3,000 vapor intrusion sites, according to The Detroit News . More than 40 percent are in metro Detroit.
Sturgis — Daniel Arroyo has lived in this southwest Michigan town for nearly 20 years, unaware his family has been near some of the country's most polluted land until toxic fumes forced state officials in 2016 to evacuate their house.
Lansing — A state environmental official initially was vague about the number of people relocated from a Detroit site for exposure to toxic fumes, claiming "several" people were vacated from the preschool center.
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Institute of Arts is expanding its popular program that places reproductions of artwork outdoors to areas of Michigan that are deemed culturally underserved.
"Inside/Out" installations as part of that effort start in the coming week and will remain on view until October.
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The Michigan House has approved legislation to prohibit a lawmaker who resigns or who has been expelled from office from running in the special election to fill the seat.
The bill passed 72-36 Thursday is a response to former Reps. Todd Courser and Cindy Gamrat running in special elections to finish the remainder of their terms in 2015. He had resigned and she had been expelled after being accused of misusing state resources to try to cover up their extramarital affair.
