The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said Thursday the Asian water monitor lizard measures more than 8 feet (2.5 meters) long.
The lizard is an escaped pet. It was first reported loose in August in a Davie neighborhood. Residents said it lurked in their backyards and scratched at their patio doors.

The American Civil Liberties Union on Wednesday announced the settlement of a lawsuit filed in 2017 against Maplewood, Missouri. The city will change its nuisance ordinance so that crime victims no longer face the threat of fines or eviction.

U.S. District Judge Gershwin Drain issued an order Wednesday in favor of Sterling Heights. An attorney for a group of residents opposing the American Islamic Community Center's mosque is appealing the ruling.
The city denied plans for the mosque in 2015 over what it said were parking, traffic and other concerns.
