KONYA, Turkey (AP) — Every December, thousands of people make a pilgrimage to the central Turkish city of Konya for 10 days of ceremonies and events commemorating the death of the 13th-century Islamic scholar, poet and Sufi mystic Jalaladdin Rumi.
Among the most visually stunning tributes is a mesmerizing ceremony by the whirling dervishes.
Iran arrests lawyer for criticizing execution
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — An Iranian lawyer has been arrested for "spreading lies" after saying on social media that a Sufi executed this week was wrongfully convicted.
Mohammed Salas was hanged on Monday after ramming police with a bus as they dispersed a Sufi rally in February, killing three police.
The semi-official Fars news agency says Zeinab Taheri, a lawyer, was arrested Wednesday after criticizing the trial and saying Salas was not guilty.
Report: Supporter of Sufi leader sentenced to death
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran's semi-official ISNA news agency is reporting that a supporter of a Sufi Islam leader who rammed a bus into a group of policemen, killing three and injuring 30 before being arrested, has been sentenced to death.
The incident in Tehran took place during February clashes between the Sufi leader's followers and police.
Mohammad Salas testified during hearings in March that he had no intention of killing the policemen but was trying to flee the clashes.
