Higher Education Notes: Film based on UNL alum’s book wins Sundance award
University of Nebraska-Lincoln alum Emily Danforth’s 2012 novel has led to an award-winning film.
Her book, “The Miseducation of Cameron Post,” is the basis for the film of the same name. The film won the Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize, the top honor of the event, on Jan. 31.
Danforth received her doctorate through the UNL English department’s creative writing program. She is currently on sabbatical from teaching at Rhode Island College.
There was a different feel to the 2018 Sundance Film Festival this year, which ended last weekend. The streets weren't as crowded with pedestrians. The traffic was much less congested. And the lines to attend the films didn't seem too terribly long. Perhaps the addition of "The Ray" theater and better traffic management explains this calmer, quieter feeling. Or has attendance dropped precipitously from last year? Either way, I can attest to the fact that the energy level certainly seemed less intense overall.

With few breakouts or Oscar pics, the Sundance market cools
The 2018 Sundance Film Festival had a lot of cultural forces working in its favor with #MeToo and a batch of the previous year's films celebrating Oscar nominations. But as the annual indie film showcase inches to a close, Sunday, with few big deals and even fewer potential breakouts, it seems the excitement has cooled and a marketplace is in flux.
Park City, Utah The Sundance Film Festival, launchpad for some of the most innovative American directors working today, is kind of like Forrest Gumps eclectic box of chocolates. You never know what youre gonna get.
The 2018 edition, which ends Sunday, is framing 110 independent films from 29 countries and feels even more miscellaneous.
