The small crowd was waiting for Taku Tattoo to open its doors at 10 a.m. and begin scheduling appointments for a suicide prevention tattoo special. For Friday, Nov. 30, business card-sized tattoos were $50 with half of the proceeds going toward Juneau Suicide Prevention Coalition.

JUCHITAN, Mexico (AP) — As he traveled with several thousand other migrants through southern Mexico this week with dreams of making it to the U.S. border, Gerson Rivas didn't want the memory of the mother he left behind in Honduras to be carried only in his heart.
So he had her name, Esperanza, tattooed in rudimentary, flowing black script on his left forearm. The name in Spanish means "hope."

In policy change, Scotland Yard gives thumbs up to tattoos
LONDON (AP) — London's Metropolitan Police force is changing its no-tattoo policy for new recruits.
The change announced Wednesday means people with visible tattoos will be able to serve as police officers — although facial tattoos will still be banned.
Commissioner Cressida Dick said the change was made to bring the police "into line with other services." She said many young people had ruled out joining the police because of their tattoos.

MONTREAL (AP) — Rick Genest, a Quebec model known for his head-to-toe tattoos and participation in the Lady Gaga music video "Born This Way," has died, his talent agency said.
Dulcedo Management confirmed on Facebook late Thursday the passing of Rick Genest, who was better known as Zombie Boy. Dulcedo said it "was in shock" and called the 32-year-old represented by the agency an "icon of the artistic scene and of the fashion world."
Beauty queen resigns title rather than cover tattoos
PHELAN, Calif. (AP) — A beauty queen in the Southern California desert community of Phelan has given up her crown rather than cover up her tattoos.
Sierra Leyde didn't have tattoos when she was named Miss Phelan at age 17.
But she celebrated her 18th birthday with tattoos of flowers on her upper arm and shoulder, and a shark on her forearm.
The Phelan Chamber of Commerce then asked her to sign a contract saying she would keep the tattoos covered while in her sash and crown.
Sheriff says guard’s tattoo is not a Nazi reference
WEST BOYLSTON, Mass. (AP) — Massachusetts officials say a jail guard's tattoo is a reference to his college football playing days and is not a Nazi symbol.
A partial picture of the tattoo, with the number 88, went viral after a visitor posted it Wednesday on social media and said it was a reference to Nazi Party leader Adolf Hitler.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — A young Connecticut woman didn't want to ever lose the autograph she got from Tom Brady.
The New England Patriots star signed 19-year-old Megan Uhrynowski's arm after a practice at Gillette Stadium on Monday night that she had attended with a friend.
Uhrynowski, a college student, told WHDH-TV her friend had suggested she turn the autograph into a tattoo.

One morning in 2017, Alex Bonebrake woke up, saw his wife, Catherine, off to work and got on his treadmill to exercise. Shortly into his run, he fell to the floor. He had suffered a stroke.
While there were warning signs, like lightheadedness, dizziness and slurring speech, Bonebrake chalked them up to being the usual anxiety he's always had.
Oregon hospital pursues ‘war on melanoma’
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Oregon Health & Science University has declared a 'war on melanoma' and is recruiting unusual foot soldiers for the job: hair dressers, makeup artists, masseurs, nail technicians and tattoo artists.
Oregon has one of the worst rates of skin cancer in the nation so the idea is to educate professionals whose jobs involve looking at skin to the warning signs of melanoma.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — It was just some leaves and branches, but it brought Andrea Reynolds to tears.
Not so much the tattoo as where it was inked — across her chest, covering up the scars and lumps left in the aftermath of the double mastectomy she had done after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

It's about her daughter Alexa Grace, who died from a rare heart disorder 11 years ago, when she was 8 months old.

Alexa had Ebstein's anomaly, a congenital defect in the heart's chambers. Because of the defect, her heart failed, Babel said.
