WILSON, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina native who became a legendary jazz drummer, composer and educator will perform for the first time in his hometown.
Bill Kaye will perform June 7 during The Jazz Revival Project at the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park in Wilson. The project is a new effort to recognize the jazz heritage of Wilson.
The 85-year-old Kaye also will talk about his life as a musician during a public discussion June 6 at 217 Brew Works.
These days it’s not unusual to hear a lot of jazz at UW-Madison. You can find it in classrooms, practice rooms and concerts featuring any of the Mead Witter School of Music’s six jazz ensembles.

October 10, 2017 marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of trailblazing musician Thelonious Sphere Monk. To commemorate Monk’s centennial, author Robin D. G. Kelley included a new afterword to his definitive 2009 biography, “Thelonious Monk: The Life and Times of an American Original” (Simon & Schuster; $20), the first full biography of legendary jazz musician. Kelley’s book was authorized by Monk’s estate and includes research from the author’s full access to family archives.
Jazz legend’s son sues California brewery over beer label
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The son of late jazz legend Thelonious Monk is suing a California brewery, alleging it is using his father's image on bottles and packaging of a Belgian-style ale and other merchandise without permission.
The lawsuit filed Tuesday in federal court in San Francisco by Thelonious Monk, Jr. accuses North Coast Brewing Co. of trademark infringement and other violations.
CHICAGO (AP) — The 39th Annual Chicago Jazz Festival will celebrate the 100th birthdays of Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, and Ella Fitzgerald.
The Luther College Jazz Orchestra will perform at 7 p.m. Friday at Zumbro Lutheran Church, 624 Third Ave. SW, Rochester.
The 20-piece orchestra, under the direction of Juan Tony Guzman, will perform pieces by Duke Ellington, Oliver Nelson, Thelonious Monk, Bill Holman, Astor Piazzolla, Fred Sturm and others. Jon Ailabouni, of the Luther jazz faculty, will give featured performances on trumpet and flugelhorn.
