The Lions officially announced the signing of defensive lineman Mike Daniels on...
Lions rule out Riddick for Sunday, Ansah questionable
DETROIT (AP) — Lions running back Theo Riddick will miss a second straight game with a knee injury when Detroit hosts Seattle on Sunday.
The Lions ruled Riddick out Friday. He has 23 catches on the season.
Detroit listed defensive end Ziggy Ansah as questionable with a shoulder injury, and linebacker Jarrad Davis is questionable with a calf injury.
Dolphins’ Wake might return against Lions; Riddick out
MIAMI (AP) — Miami Dolphins defensive end Cameron Wake is on a course to return Sunday against Detroit from a knee injury that sidelined him the past two weeks.
Wake is listed as questionable but took full part in practice Friday. He coyly declined to say whether he expected to play but added, "It'll be Christmas morning on Sunday."
The return of Wake would be timely because Miami defensive ends Charles Harris (calf) and Jonathan Woodard (concussion) were ruled out.
FANTASY PLAYS: Week 2 pickups good, but no huge players
After the first full week of fantasy football results, there are interesting potential adds on the waiver wire, but it seems unlikely there are any major difference-makers yet that aren't widely owned in leagues. Yet there are certainly some distinctive and helpful targets who can help plug some potential holes.
Lions Preview Capsule

Lions rally from 21-point deficit to beat Buccaneers 33-30
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Starters for both teams were long gone before the Detroit Lions rallied for their first preseason victory under coach Matt Patricia, leaving the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a loss that didn't feel like a loss.
"They keep score, so you want to win the game," Pro Bowl defensive tackle Gerald McCoy said. "But our first two groups played well. ... We've just got to finish the game a little better."
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Lions have desperately tried to improve what has been a weakness, signing and drafting players to improve their running game.
Detroit ranked last in the NFL last season in rushing offense and has been among the league's worst on the ground offensively in recent seasons.
Lions general manager Bob Quinn has made it a priority to fix the problem.
Allen Park — Over the next several days, leading up to the NFL Draft, we'll take a position-by-position look at the Detroit Lions' roster situation and evaluate how the team might address these positions during the event. Today: Running back
■ Current roster: Ameer Abdullah, LeGarrette Blount, Theo Riddick, Zach Zenner, Dwayne Washington, Tion Green
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Lions added depth in the backfield, signing LeGarrette Blount and re-signing Zach Zenner.
Detroit signed both players Friday to compete with Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick for carries this year.
The Detroit Lions have been no better than 28th in the NFL the past four years in rushing yards, finishing dead last twice, including last season.
The way Mel Kiper Jr. sees it, help could be on the way in the NFL draft.
The ESPN draft expert has the Lions selecting LSU running back Derrius Guice at No. 20 in his latest mock draft (pay site), revealed Tuesday. The 5-foot-11, 218-pound Guice rushed for 1,251 yards (5.3 yards a carry) and 11 touchdowns last season for the Tigers.
Cincinnati — Justin Rogers grades the Lions' performance in Sunday's 26-17 loss to Cincinnati Bengals.
Matthew Stafford completed 19-of-35 passes for 203 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He showed good touch on his deep ball, particularly on a pair of tight-window throws to Eric Ebron. Stafford's biggest mistake was an interception when he forced a throw despite a defender hanging on him.
Lions’ Riddick dodges injury as run game accelerates
Allen Park — After an injury scare last Saturday, the Lions were able to breathe a sigh of relief when running back Theo Riddick showed no limitations during the week of practice.
Riddick was removed from last weekend's game against Chicago with a wrist injury. The particular issue raised additional concerns since he suffered season-ending injuries to both wrists last season and required offseason surgery to correct the issue.
Lions coach Jim Caldwell downplayed any long-term concern.
Allen Park — The Detroit Lions got one starting offensive lineman back on the practice field, but remained without two others on Wednesday.
Right tackle Rick Wagner practiced for the first time since injuring his ankle in the team's Week 13 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. The prized free-agent addition had arguably been Detroit's most consistent lineman prior to suffering the injury.
Caldwell doesn’t sound hopeful on status of Lang, Riddick, TJ Jones
Allen Park – Lions coach Jim Caldwell declined to offer any updates on the players who were unable to finish Saturday's game against the Chicago Bears, but struck an ominous tone with his response when asking if there were any long-term concerns with Theo Riddick, TJ Jones or T.J. Lang.
"You'll have to check the report to get a sense of it, but there may be one or two, here or there," Caldwell said.
More:Wojo: Stafford keeps firing, Lions' hopes keep breathing
Detroit – The Lions lost three players to injury in Saturday's victory over the Chicago Bears, including another blow to the team's offensive line.
Guard T.J. Lang, who has been battling a foot injury the past three weeks, had to leave the game early in the second quarter because of the issue, leaving the Lions to rely on three backups the rest of the way. Right tackle Rick Wagner (ankle) and center Travis Swanson (concussion) had been ruled out before the game.
Detroit — Justin Rogers grades the Detroit Lions' performance in Saturday's 20-10 victory over the Chicago Bears:
Matthew Stafford was sharp, completing better than 75 percent of his passes, while showing elusiveness to extend plays on more than one occasion. He missed one key throw, a would-be touchdown to Eric Ebron on a drive on which the Lions settled for a field goal, but was otherwise efficient, not turning the ball over. Grade: A
During the Lions second drive of the game, Darius Slay headed back to the locker room and being evaluated for a concussion.
Allen Park – Not unlike second-round pick Teez Tabor, Detroit Lions rookie tight end Michael Roberts has had trouble getting consistent playing time this season, primarily because the veteran depth in front of him has stayed healthy.
Eric Ebron and Darren Fells haven't missed a game, leaving Roberts to average a little more than 13 snaps per game, which he's primarily served as a blocker.
Wojo and Rogers break down the Lions' game against the Bears on Saturday at Ford Field.
Here are some of the highlights on this week's Lions Lowdown.
► 1:10: Lions' playoff chances back up to 15 percent
Tampa, Fla. — Justin Rogers grades the Detroit Lions' performance in Sunday's 24-21 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
You wouldn't know Matthew Stafford was nursing a hand injury the way he slung it against the Bucs. He completed 81.8 percent of his throws, including his first 12 and final six. The downside to the performance were two throws forced into coverage, intercepted and ended scoring threats. Grade: B
Tampa, Fla. — The Detroit Lions scored their first first-quarter touchdown in more than a month, forced five turnovers, but still barely got by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday at Raymond James Stadium, 24-21.
Detroit's inability to take care of the ball, combined with drive-killing penalties, kept it close before Matt Prater connected on the winning 46-yard field goal with 20 seconds remaining.
Baltimore — The Detroit Lions will be without starting running back Ameer Abdullah against the Baltimore Ravens. He had been listed as questionable for the game, with a neck injury, on Friday.
Abdullah is the team's leading rusher with 505 yards on 150 carries. Theo Riddick is expected to take over the bulk of the workload. He's been successful since the team's bye, averaging 4.5 yards per carry the past five games.
Allen Park — The Detroit Lions got some positive news in their final practice in preparation for Sunday's game against the Ravens with the returns of guard T.J. Lang (foot) and running back Ameer Abdullah (neck) to the field.
Center Travis Swanson (knee) and return man Jamal Agnew (knee) remained sidelined, completing their weeklong absence.
Allen Park — There isn't much going right with the Detroit Lions' ground game, but if you're looking for a spark of hope, look no further than Theo Riddick, who has done well with his opportunities since the team's bye.
In the past five games, Riddick has carried the ball 27 times, averaging 4.5 yards per attempt. It's putting him in line for a bigger role down the stretch.
Detroit — Justin Rogers grades the Detroit Lions' performance in Thursday's 30-23 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
Chicago — Justin Rogers grades the Detroit Lions' performance in Sunday's 27-24 win over Chicago Bears.
Allen Park — Kenny Golladay is back on the field and making an impact.
Despite being held to just 11 snaps Sunday against the Cleveland Browns, Golladay made the most of his time, reeling in back-to-back catches of 14 and 50 yards to set the Lions up in the red zone.
Two plays later, Theo Riddick found himself in the end zone and the Lions tied the game at 24.
Those proved to be Golladay's only two catches of the day, but they were big.
Detroit — There are a lot of reasons the Cleveland Browns are winless, but the team came to town with the NFL's best run defenses. Through eight games, Browns opponents were averaging just 2.9 yards per carry, a half-yard better than next-best team.
The Lions, on the other hand, entered Sunday with one of the NFL's least efficient ground games, averaging only 3.2 yards per attempt. Only the Cincinnati Bengals and Arizona Cardinals were worse.
Justin Rogers’ Lions grades: Stafford, offense get their act together
Detroit – Justin Rogers grades the Detroit Lions' performance in Sunday's 38-24 win over the Cleveland Browns.
Green Bay, Wisconsin — Justin Rogers grades the Detroit Lions' performance in Monday's 30-17 win over the Green Bay Packers.
Matthew Stafford was sublimely accurate in the victory over the Packers, putting the ball right where it needed to be all night. Whether it was hanging on for an extra tick against the blitz to give Theo Riddick extra space on a long screen gain, or lofting two touchdown tosses right into Marvin Jones' wheelhouse, Stafford was on point in the victory. Grade: A
Allen Park — On one hand, Lions offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter notes he's aware of his team's tendencies and doesn't want to be predictable. On the other, the Lions aren't using running back Ameer Abdullah on third downs, despite the back's proven abilities as a pass-catcher.
Allen Park — The trade deadline (and taking the kids trick-or-treating) screwed with the schedule a bit, but here's this week's 10 film study observations from the Lions' 20-15 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
WHAT HAPPENED IN THE RED ZONE
The story from the game has been the Lions' inability to score a touchdown with five trips inside the 20. We'll break them down, trip-by-trip.
Detroit — Justin Rogers grades the Lions' performance in Sunday's 20-15 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Allen Park – Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick are both dynamic, versatile playmakers, but for some reason, the Detroit Lions have been reluctant to have the two running backs on the field at the same time.
Through six games, the two haven't shared the field. In fact, the Lions haven't run any two-back formations this season, unless you count the random usage of a defensive player as a fullback.
Detroit Lions mailbag: Golladay’s impact, Ebron’s targets, Steelers’ big 3
The bye week is over and the Pittsburgh Steelers on deck. What's on your mind Detroit Lions fans?
Golladay ready to step in to Tate's shoes?
— Craig Hawkyard (@Lionshawk) October 23, 2017
Barring a setback with his injured hamstring, I have to imagine Kenny Golladay is back in the lineup this week. And with Golden Tate likely to be sidelined by his shoulder injury, Golladay should see a sizable snap count in his return to action.
Lions Preview Capsule
New faces: OT Rick Wagner, OG T.J. Lang, OT Greg Robinson, DE Cornelius Washington, rookie LB Jarrad Davis, rookie CB Teez Tabor.
Key losses: OT Riley Reiff, OG Larry Warford, LB DeAndre Levy, DE Kerry Hyder, WR Anquan Boldin.
Lions’ Riddick on injured reserve on eve of Packers game
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Lions have put running back Theo Riddick on injured reserve with a wrist injury.
Detroit made the move Saturday, a day before hosting the Green Bay Packers with the NFC North title at stake.
Cowboys DE Gregory active vs Lions after 14-game suspension
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Dallas defensive end Randy Gregory is active for the first time this season against Detroit on Monday night after serving a 14-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.
Gregory was originally suspended four games before a 10-game ban was added during the season for another violation by the second-year player who slid to the second round of the 2015 draft in part because of concerns over marijuana use.
Lions waive Pettigrew, rule out Swanson for Sunday
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Lions have waived tight end Brandon Pettigrew from the reserve/non-football injury list.
The team announced the move Friday.
Pettigrew was drafted in the first round by the Lions in 2009 and had some productive seasons as a pass catcher, but he tore his left anterior cruciate ligament late last year and hasn't played at all this season.
Joique Bell will graduate, may play for Lions this weekend
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — Joique Bell could be headed for one big weekend.
Bell picks up his master's degree in sports administration at Wayne State University on Saturday. The next day, he could make his season debut with the Detroit Lions in his return after they cut him in February.
"It's funny that my first week back here is the same week that I graduate," he said Wednesday.
Desperate for depth in its banged-up backfield, Detroit brought Bell back by signing him Tuesday.
Bing Predicts winner: Vikings (72 percent)Opening line: MIN -7Kickoff time: 1:00 PM ETThe Vikings have lost two straight games, as the offense has sputtered since the team's Week 6 bye. After averaging 23.8 points in its first five games, Minnesota has scored only 10 points in each of its two losses. Sam Bradford has particularly struggled, completing 60.2 percent of his passes with an average of 5.8 yards per attempt. Detroit has allowed a league-worst 113.7 passer rating to opposing quarterbacks, though, so Bradford should be able to bounce back. The Lions saw their three-game winning streak snapped last week in a 20-13 loss at Houston. Theo Riddick became the team's third different leading rusher in as many weeks, totaling 56 yards on 11 carries.
Detroit’s late-game magic runs out in 20-13 loss to Houston
HOUSTON (AP) — The Detroit Lions made a habit recently of rallying late for wins.
On Sunday their latest comeback attempt fell just short in a 20-13 loss to the Houston Texans (5-3).
The Lions (4-4) cut the lead to seven when Theo Riddick connected with Matthew Stafford on a 1-yard touchdown reception early in the fourth quarter.
Lions struggle offensively in 3rd straight loss
CHICAGO (AP) — Theo Riddick had nowhere to run, all day long. Marvin Jones Jr. was bottled up for most of the afternoon. Golden Tate had a costly mistake.
The Detroit Lions have seen what their offense can do when it's clicking. They also have struggled with inconsistency, like Sunday against the Chicago Bears.
Lions RB Ameer Abdullah out 8-plus weeks with foot injury
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — Theo Riddick is about to get a chance to be an every-down running back in the NFL.
The Detroit Lions put running back Ameer Abdullah on the reserve-injured list with a foot injury Wednesday, keeping him out of the lineup for at least eight weeks and pushing Riddick up the depth chart.
Lions potentially have versatile, dynamic duo in backfield
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — A year after having the NFL's worst running game, the Detroit Lions look as if they potentially have a dynamic duo in the backfield.
Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick combined for 120 yards receiving and 108 yards rushing in the Lions' season-opening 39-35 victory at Indianapolis.
Prater gets redemption with late field in 39-35 win at Indy
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Detroit Lions kicker Matt Prater just wanted a second chance Sunday.
Matthew Stafford ensured he got it — and Prater delivered with a 43-yard field goal that gave the Lions a wild 39-35 victory at Indianapolis.
Just four minutes earlier, after Stafford had broken a 28-28 tie with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Theo Riddick, Prater pushed the extra point wide right. So it was 34-28, opening the door for Colts quarterback Andrew Luck to pull off another comeback.
Allen Park -- Welcome to our Detroit Lions mailbag.
While there's a break in the action between the end of training camp and the team's second preseason game, it felt like a good time to field some of your questions.
@Justin_Rogers likelihood we see three players w/ 80 receptions each again this year? And if so, who are the favorites to reach the mark?
