Longleat Safari Park said Wednesday that female tiger Shouri died in a fight Tuesday after she entered an enclosure where a pair of mating tigers was being kept.
Officials say an investigation has been launched to determine how she managed to enter the enclosure through an unlocked door. Shouri had spent 12 of her 13 years at the park.
Police: Pot smokers find caged tiger in abandoned house
HOUSTON (AP) — Houston police say some people who went into an abandoned home to smoke marijuana found a caged tiger.
They called the city on Monday and the major offender animal cruelty unit and animal shelter volunteers arrived on the scene. Authorities nicknamed the tiger "Tyson" after the movie "The Hangover."

LONDON (AP) — For ten days, the London Zoo kept its newly arrived male Sumatran tiger Asim in a separate enclosure from Melati, the female tiger who was supposed to become his mate.
Zoologists gave them time to get used to each other's presence and smells, and waited for what they felt would be the right time to let them get together. On Friday, they put the two tigers into the same enclosure — and Asim killed Melati as shocked handlers tried in vain to intervene.
Rare tiger gets acquainted with new home at London Zoo
LONDON (AP) — A rare Sumatran tiger is getting acquainted with his new home after arriving at the London Zoo this week.
Asim, from Ree Park Safari in Denmark, was moved to the zoo Tuesday as a new mate for its resident female, 10-year-old Melati.
The zoo's head tiger keeper, Kathryn Sanders, says "Asim is a handsome, confident cat who is known for being very affectionate with the ladies in his life. We're hoping he'll be the perfect mate for our beautiful Melati."

Havar, Abilene Zoo’s white Bengal tiger, dies
ABILENE, Texas (AP) — Havar, the white Bengal tiger that has been one of the Abilene Zoo's star attractions for 9½ years, has died at an age estimated between 18 and 20 years.
An Abilene Zoo statement says the big cat died Friday morning of natural causes in the presence of the zoo's care team. The zoo said that "although Havar was considered geriatric, his death has come unexpectedly."
Dr. Stephanie Carle, the zoo veterinarian, said Havar "was such an incredible tiger and was loved by us all."

NJ bars circuses, carnivals from using wild, exotic animals
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Gov. Phil Murphy has signed into law a bill to bar traveling acts from using wild and exotic animals such as elephants and tigers.
The measure signed Friday makes it illegal to use such animals in carnivals, circuses, fairs, parades, petting zoos and similar live events.
"These animals belong in their natural habitats or in wildlife sanctuaries, not in performances where their safety and the safety of others is at risk," Murphy said in a statement.
Man charged after tiger cub appears in YouTube star’s video
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Southern California man has been charged with illegally owning and mistreating a tiger cub that appeared in a video with YouTube star Logan Paul.
The Los Angeles city attorney's office announced the charges against 32-year-old Nicholas Perkins on Wednesday.
Investigators say they identified Perkins and the cub by watching one of Paul's videos.
Connecticut zoo receives $1 million for tiger habitat

12-year-old tiger to depart Bridgeport zoo
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) — An Amur Tiger at the Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport is leaving this weekend for a new permanent home.
The 12-year-old tiger named Petya has been in Connecticut for three years since it came from the Indianapolis Zoo. The animals live primarily in southeast Russia and generally live in captivity for up to 22 years.
China postpones on allowing tiger bone, rhino horn trading
BEIJING (AP) — China is postponing its decision to allow trading in tiger and rhinoceros parts a bare two weeks after the easing of the ban had raised fears the country was giving legal cover to poaching and smuggling of endangered wildlife.
The official Xinhua News Agency quoted Cabinet official Ding Xuedong as saying Monday that the change had "been postponed after study."
Oklahoma zookeeper accused of killing 5 tigers, selling cubs
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A former Oklahoma zookeeper and candidate for governor already accused in a murder-for-hire plot has been indicted on 19 new counts accusing him of killing tigers and selling tiger cubs.
A federal grand jury unsealed the charges Wednesday against 55-year-old Joseph Maldonado-Passage, who's known as "Joe Exotic" and formerly operated a zoo in Wynnewood, Oklahoma. Maldonado-Passage ran unsuccessfully for Oklahoma governor this year.
Indian villagers crush tigress to death after she killed man
LUCKNOW, India (AP) — Villagers in northern India have crushed a tigress to death with a tractor after she killed a man, officials said Monday.
Forest officer Mahavir Kaujlagi said that villagers had circled around the tigress after it killed a man working on farmland late Sunday. When the tigress tried to escape, the villagers crushed it under the wheels of a tractor.
Villagers say the tigress also injured a youth in an attack about 10 days ago.
China reverses ban on trade in tiger, rhino products
BEIJING (AP) — China says it will allow trading in products made from endangered tigers and rhinos under "special circumstances," reversing a long-standing ban and bringing condemnation from conservation groups.
A notice from the Cabinet issued Monday avoided mentioning any change in the law, saying instead that it would "control" the trade and that rhino horns and tiger bones could only be obtained from farmed animals for use in "medical research or in healing."
Akron Zoo announces $17 million expansion
AKRON, Ohio (AP) — The Akron Zoo in Ohio has announced a $17 million expansion plan that includes a new exhibit featuring lions and tigers.
Zoo officials say the Pride of Africa area will open in May 2019, and the Wild Asia area will open in summer 2020.

Lion attacks owner in Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez
MEXICO CITY (AP) — A female lion attacked a man who apparently kept her along with another lion and a tiger as pets at his home in the northern Mexico border city of Ciudad Juarez, authorities said Tuesday.
A Juarez police official who was not authorized to be quoted by name said police were called to the house in the upscale Rincones de San Marcos neighborhood on Sunday.
Police found the man bloodied and unconscious. He was taken to a local hospital in serious condition.
Apparent white tiger attack kills keeper at Japan zoo
TOKYO (AP) — Police in southern Japan said Tuesday that they are investigating the death of a zookeeper in an apparent attack by a white tiger.
Police said Akira Furusho was found bleeding from his neck and lying on the floor Monday evening inside a tiger cage at Hirakawa Zoological Park in Kagoshima.
Zoo officials said they believe Furusho was attacked while trying to move a male tiger from its exhibition cage to its night-time cage.

Minot zoo to build new cat habitat
MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Minot's zoo is getting a new cat habitat.
Officials recently broke ground on the new habitat at Roosevelt Park Zoo, the Minot Daily News reported. The habitat will include space for Amur tigers and African lions. The tigers will be located near the zoo's visitor center and the lions will be on the east loop of the zoo where other African species are located.
CINCINNATI (AP) — The Cincinnati Zoo's last white tiger has died.
Zoo officials said Thursday that Popsy has been euthanized due to age-related issues. The female tiger was 22.

Wichita man who tried to buy tiger pelts charged
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A Wichita man who prosecutors say tried to buy two tiger pelts is facing federal charges.
U.S. Attorney Steve McAllister said Thursday that 38-year-old Ret Thach is charged with violating the federal Lacey Act, which prohibits interstate selling or buying of animals protected by the Endangered Species Act.
Thach allegedly agreed to pay $8,000 to a seller in Wisconsin and fund traveling expenses to get the pelts delivered to Wichita.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A 14-year-old tiger has died at Salt Lake City's zoo.
The Hogle Zoo announced Friday that the Amur tiger named Kazek died after zookeepers witnessed rapid deterioration in his health.
The cause of death is still unclear. The zoo says an initial autopsy showed an inflamed gastrointestinal tract and a mass in his small intestine. He had been diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease and was on a special diet to manage the illness.
BERLIN (AP) — Two lions, two tigers and a jaguar were thought to have escaped their enclosures Friday at a zoo in western Germany, sparking a massive search by police and warnings to residents to stay indoors.
