ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — It has been a difficult season for Southern Methodist University's basketball team, but the Mustangs managed to prolong it for at least another day after defeating the University of Connecticut 80-73 in the first round of the American Athletic Conference tournament.
The Mustangs got 23 points from Ben Emelogu, 21 from Akoy Agau and 19 from Jahmal McMurray, but still needed to make seven of eight free throws in the final 37 seconds to thwart a furious UConn rally.
Milton scores 33, lifts SMU over No. 7 Wichita State 83-78
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — SMU coach Tim Jankovich said his Mustangs would have to be "near perfect" to have a chance against No. 7 Wichita State.

DALLAS (AP) — Ben Emelogu II did not miss, knocking down all five 3-pointers, another field goal and both free throws to amass 19 points as SMU dominated Cal Poly, 84-64 to win its 31st straight home game Tuesday night.
Shake Milton was 4 of 8 from behind the three-point arc, grabbed eight boards and dished six assists for the Mustangs. Overall SMU was 15 of 28 from behind the arc, hitting 53.6 percent of their shots from long range.

DALLAS (AP) — Tim Jankovich never wanted to watch the film of SMU's first-round NCAA Tournament loss last March. The only reason he did this week was because the Mustangs were getting ready to play Southern California again.

DALLAS (AP) — Jarrey Foster scored 19 points, Ben Emelogu II had 17 points and a career-high nine rebounds, and SMU routed Northwestern State 81-35 on Wednesday night.
Northwestern State made only 12 field goals — three coming in the first half— and shot 24.5 percent for the game. The Demons missed 21 straight shots over 17-plus minutes in the first half.

That was an area of concern for SMU entering the game after TCU had forced opponents into 151 turnovers in its first eight games.

Ojeleye leads SMU past Pittsburgh 76-67
NEW YORK (AP) — Until last week, Semi Ojeleye had not appeared in a game for nearly two years and even when he played at Duke, the minutes were limited.
Since then, Ojeleye has been putting in the work away from the court and so far it is paying off much to the delight of SMU coach Tim Jankovich.
Ojeleye continued his torrid start by scoring 20 of his 24 points in the second half and SMU defeated Pittsburgh 76-67 in the first semifinal of the 2K Classic at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night.
Shawn Forrest named assistant coach for Jankovich at SMU
DALLAS (AP) — Shawn Forrest has been named an assistant basketball coach at SMU, his third school since the end of last season.
Mustangs coach Tim Jankovich announced Forrest's hiring Tuesday.
Forrest spent the past three seasons as an assistant at Western Kentucky before head coach Ray Harper resigned. Forrest was named a UTSA assistant in May, but two weeks later left for Louisiana Tech before the unexpected opening at SMU.
DALLAS (AP) — The wait is over for Tim Jankovich to be SMU's head coach.
SMU formally named Jankovich as head coach Monday, three days after Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown abruptly resigned.
"I'm still sad and a little bit emotional about it, but at the same time, incredibly excited about the opportunity here for me and my staff," Jankovich said Monday night. "That part is awfully exciting, and (I'm) feeling all those emotions that you expect."
