SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil coach Tite has extended his contract until the end of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the national football confederation said on Wednesday.
Tite, 57, who has been in charge since August 2016, is the first Brazil coach to extend his deal after a World Cup since Claudio Coutinho in 1978.
His team was knocked out by Belgium in the quarter-finals in Russia earlier this month but, unlike other national coaches, he has received little criticism since arriving home.
SOCHI, Russia (AP) — It took an angry-looking bird to get Brazilians hooked on their World Cup mascot.
The team's new mascot — a yellow canary with an angry face that represents some of the fans' frustration after having lost the World Cup at home four years ago — has become a huge sensation everywhere it goes in Russia.
Fans unofficially dubbed it the "Canarinho Pistola," which translates to "Pissed Off Little Canary" or "Angry Little Canary."
Brazil coach Tite not a fan of penalty shootouts
KAZAN, Russia (AP) — Brazil coach Tite isn't a fan of penalty shootouts.
He doesn't have any better ideas, though.
"Taking a penalty is something really hard. A football match should never end by taking penalties," Tite said Thursday. "I don't see that as a valid result. But I don't know what to suggest instead."
SOCHI, Russia (AP) — Once a critic of Neymar's antics, Brazil coach Tite now defends the demeanor of his team's star.
"Winning or losing is part of the game," Tite said in 2012 after coaching Corinthians in a match against Santos and Neymar. "But to pretend and try to take advantage, that's not part of the game. That's a bad example for a kid, for my son, for those who are going to watch this and think that it's good to take advantage of others."
MOSCOW (AP) — Worried no more, Brazil is through at the World Cup.
Paulinho and Thiago Silva scored a goal each Wednesday to give the five-time champions a 2-0 victory over Serbia and first place in their group.
Brazil struggled in its opening two matches, first held to a 1-1 draw and then needing late goals to win the other. But they controlled this one, and it was a big relief to Tite.
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) — Neymar will start for Brazil in a mostly unchanged lineup against Costa Rica on Friday at the World Cup.
Although Brazil coach Tite said Neymar still needs time to reach peak shape, he insisted he is not endangering the striker's health.
"Yes, he will be playing. There's no sacrifice here," Tite said through a translator Thursday. "We want to win but the coach is not going to play around with a player's health, the price would be too high to pay."
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) — The liveliest selection debate swirling around Brazil's national team heading into the World Cup has become more intense one game into the tournament.
Should it be Gabriel Jesus or Roberto Firmino in the lone-striker role?

ROSTOV-ON-DON, Russia (AP) — Revered by his players and credited with turning Brazil's national team around, Tite knows he's not perfect.

MOSCOW (AP) — Brazil's quest for World Cup redemption begins Sunday. So does Germany's title defense.
The nations are forever linked by Germany's 7-1 humiliation of host Brazil in the 2014 World Cup semifinals. This year's Brazil squad is stacked with talented strikers as usual, while top-ranked Germany is a threat to become the first repeat winner since Brazil went back-to-back in 1958 and 1962.
