Nauseating or just right? NFL officiating in the crosshairs
Mike Pereira was in his customary spot next to Troy Aikman in the Fox Sports broadcast booth for the Bears-Vikings game on the final week of the regular season, ready to chime in when needed on any close calls on the field.
Instead, he got one in the booth when Aikman declared the officiating for the game to be "nauseating."
"I turned away because I didn't know if he was going to throw up on me or not," the former NFL officiating guru turned TV analyst said with a laugh.
Maccagnan sticking around, so it’s on GM to turn Jets around
NEW YORK (AP) — It wasn't long after Todd Bowles was fired as the Jets' head coach that frustrated fans started asking the inevitable question:
What about Mike Maccagnan?
The general manager was hired a day before Bowles in 2015, the two linked together — but separately in the team's reporting structure — for the next four seasons that featured lots of losing and disappointment.
Players hate to see coaches fired, but at least they’re paid
DENVER (AP) — Every year, while a dozen NFL head coaches are preparing their teams for the playoffs, nearly as many coaches are called into their general manager's office and told they're fired for not being one of those dozen coaches who are preparing their teams for the playoffs.
Eight coaches lost their jobs in 2018, including Mike McCarthy in Green Bay and Hue Jackson in Cleveland, long before the holidays rolled around.
Jets keeping reporting structure as search for coach begins
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Christopher Johnson's first major decision running the New York Jets didn't come easily for him.
The next one will shape the future of the franchise.
"Absolutely," the team's acting chairman and CEO said Monday. "And it's not being taken lightly."
Johnson knew it was time to part ways with coach Todd Bowles, who went 24-40 in four disappointing seasons that included no playoff appearances.

NEW YORK (AP) — Todd Bowles' tenure with the New York Jets began four years ago with plenty of promise. It ended with too many losses and no playoff appearances.

Jets’ Trumaine Johnson held out for ‘in-house matter’
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Trumaine Johnson's tough first season with the New York Jets hit another rough patch.
The team's top cornerback was held out of practice Wednesday for what coach Todd Bowles called "an in-house matter."
Both Bowles and Johnson declined to discuss details of their conversation or why the player was kept off the field. Johnson says he "of course" expects to return to practice Thursday and play at New England in the season finale Sunday.
Todd Bowles mum on future with Jets despite rumors
NEW YORK (AP) — Todd Bowles is concerned about only one thing regarding his future with the New York Jets: the team's next opponent.
Despite all the rumors and expectations that the game Sunday at New England will be his last as coach of the franchise, Bowles refuses to publicly fuel any of the speculation that has seemed like an inevitable ending for weeks.
"I do not talk about my job," Bowles said during a conference call Monday.
Seeing Yellow: Jets’ Bowles blasts officials for penalties
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Todd Bowles simply couldn't believe his eyes.
The yellow flags kept flying all game, and his New York Jets were being called for penalties at crucial moments against the Packers. There were a whopping 16 in all for a team-record 172 yards, according to ESPN Stats & Info, during Green Bay's 44-38 overtime victory Sunday.
"I thought we were playing two teams," a noticeably angry Bowles said. "I thought we were playing the Packers — and the striped shirts."

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets wide receiver Quincy Enunwa will miss his second straight game because of an ankle injury.

Darnold shines, nearly delivers Jets another victory
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Sam Darnold nearly pulled off another one.
Six days after leading the New York Jets to the first fourth-quarter comeback victory of his young career, the rookie quarterback almost did it again — falling just shy in a 29-22 loss to the Houston Texans on Saturday night.
"To go out there against a good Texans team, it would've been awesome to be able to get that win," Darnold said, "but we just came up short."
Jets RB Crowell, WR Enunwa out vs. Texans with injuries
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets will be without two key playmakers on offense against the Houston Texans.
Starting running back Isaiah Crowell and wide receiver Quincy Enunwa will not play because of injuries that kept them out of practice all week.
Crowell, who is dealing with a toe ailment, leads the Jets with 685 yards rushing and six touchdowns. The game Saturday will mark the first the durable running back has missed in his five-year NFL career.
Jets’ Bowles remains steady despite facing uncertain future
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Todd Bowles' days as coach of the New York Jets are numbered in many people's minds. To some fans and media, his time has long been up.
The embattled Bowles appears likely to be among those looking for new jobs the day the NFL's regular season ends, if not sooner. That uncertainty has not affected the coach's approach, even as rumors swirl about what many deem an inevitable unhappy ending.
Bowles mum on Jets starter, but all signs point to Darnold
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets' starting quarterback against the Buffalo Bills is ... still to be determined.
All signs indicate it will be rookie Sam Darnold under center after he was a full participant at practice all week following missing three games with a strained right foot. Coach Todd Bowles declined, however, to announce Friday whether it will be Darnold or Josh McCown.
"We'll decide that on Sunday," Bowles said. "Between him and Josh, they both had good weeks."
Bills, Jets futures on display with rookie QBs set to start
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — The only time rookie quarterbacks Josh Allen and Sam Darnold got on the field when the Bills faced the Jets a month ago was to shake hands following Buffalo's lopsided victory.
On Sunday, much more is anticipated from both when the two AFC East teams meet in Orchard Park.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Sam Darnold is one step closer to returning from his foot injury.

"That remains to be seen," coach Todd Bowles said during a conference call Monday. "I expect him to be out there. We'll evaluate him as he goes out there."

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Todd Bowles is running the quarterback sneak until Sunday.
The New York Jets coach declined Friday to announce whether Sam Darnold or Josh McCown will start at Tennessee against the Titans.

Jets QBs Darnold, McCown limited again at practice
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets' starting QB is TBD for Sunday.
Sam Darnold and Josh McCown were both limited at practice for the second straight day, leaving it uncertain who will be under center at Tennessee.

"We'll see who's the healthiest," Bowles said. "All of them are taking reps right now and we'll make that decision as the week goes."
Jets place left guard James Carpenter on season-ending IR
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets placed left guard James Carpenter on the injured reserve list Wednesday with a shoulder injury, ending the season for one of the team's most reliable players.

Jets’ McCown has sore thumb, Darnold uncertain to practice
NEW YORK (AP) — Josh McCown might be in for at least one more start for the New York Jets.
The 39-year-old quarterback banged his hand on a helmet, causing a cut during New York's 27-13 loss to New England on Sunday. He had a heavy wrap on his hand as he left the locker room, but it isn't expected to keep him out of practice Wednesday.
Jets lose again, but at least put up a fight vs. Patriots
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Any athlete will state firmly that a loss is a loss, regardless of the quality of performance.
Still, the way the New York Jets fell to the New England Patriots 27-13 on Sunday didn't have a terrible look or feel. Certainly not how their 41-10 debacle against weak sister Buffalo felt in the Jets' most recent game before their bye.
Jets QB Darnold suits up for practice, but sits out again
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Sam Darnold had his jersey and helmet back on, a positive sign for the New York Jets rookie quarterback.
He still sat out team drills again Wednesday, making it more likely that he'll miss his second straight game.
Darnold suited up for practice for the first time since injuring his right foot nearly three weeks ago, and coach Todd Bowles said he's progressing. But it's uncertain if he'll be healthy enough to play Sunday against New England.

Bowles’ sinking Jets bottom out with 41-10 loss to Bills
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — The locker room was eerily quiet as New York Jets players got dressed, packed their bags and headed for the exits.
Their 41-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday was as ugly as it gets. And it further cast doubts on the future of coach Todd Bowles.

Jets promote QB Davis Webb, place TE Neal Sterling on IR

Jets injured WRs Anderson, Enunwa closer to returning
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets wide receivers Robby Anderson and Quincy Enunwa are moving closer to returning from their ankle injuries and are listed as questionable to play at Miami on Sunday.

Anderson missed last Sunday's game at Chicago; Enunwa has been sidelined two games.
Time for struggling Jets to ‘dig ourselves out’ of 3-5 hole
NEW YORK (AP) — All those good feelings and positive vibes from a two-game winning streak are long gone. Two straight losses have the Jets scrambling for answers — again — and they need to find them fast.
Todd Bowles' bunch is 3-5 after eight games for the third straight season. New York finished 5-11 in each of the past two, and a repeat performance might not sit well with ownership — or the fans.
Jets could be without WR Anderson, CB Johnson, C Long
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets will be short-handed in Chicago.
Wide receiver Robby Anderson is doubtful for Sunday's game because of an ankle injury that kept him out of practice all week. Receiver Quincy Enunwa was previously ruled out with a high ankle sprain.
That leaves rookie quarterback Sam Darnold without two top receivers.
