"This is another very important step," Herman said. "Winning it would certainly be even bigger."

‘A long 2 years,’ and Texas back contending for Big 12 title
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The last time Texas played in the Big 12 championship, the Longhorns were wrapping a decade of 10 wins every season and appeared set for a future of winning a whole lot more.
The decade that followed included a whole lot of losing and got two head coaches — Mack Brown and Charlie Strong — shoved out the door.

Texas aims for Big 12 title game in return to Kansas
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Tom Herman wasn't on the Texas sideline two years ago, even if a bunch of his players were, when the Longhorns walked out of Memorial Stadium with a head-shaking loss to Kansas.
The defeat ended a string of 13 consecutive wins over the Jayhawks, likely sealed the fate of embattled coach Charlie Strong and ultimately led to Herman's hiring away from Houston.

Ehlinger’s 4th TD lifts No. 15 Texas to 41-34 win at Tech
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Sam Ehlinger had gotten No. 15 Texas down the field with some nifty runs. The sophomore quarterback then took a shot at the end zone — and got the winning pass.
Lil'Jordan Humphrey outleaped a defender inside the 5 and then pulled him along to the end zone for a 29-yard touchdown with 21 seconds left, giving the Longhorns a 41-34 victory over Texas Tech after blowing a 17-point lead in the fourth quarter.
No. 15 Texas hurting on 2-game skid, trip to Texas Tech next
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The second half of the season has turned sour and painful for No. 15 Texas.
The Longhorns have lost two in a row after a 6-1 start to fall out of first place in the Big 12. They had to endure a flurry of "horns down" signs from West Virginia after giving up the winning touchdown and 2-point conversion with just 16 seconds left on Saturday.
Texas finally in a November Big 12 title hunt
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — After years of being a late-season afterthought, Texas coach Tom Herman wanted the Longhorns to be competing for a Big 12 title in November.
Texas is right where he wanted, with a key matchup against West Virginia up next.
The No. 12 Mountaineers (6-1, 4-1 Big 12, No. 13 CFP) and No. 15 Longhorns (6-1, 4-1, No. 17 CFP) play Saturday in a game both need to win to keep a share of the conference lead with an eye toward the conference title game in December.

AP Top 25 Takeaways: Before 1st CFP rankings, field trimmed
The last weekend before the College Football Playoff rankings debut shook loose some hopefuls, clearing the clutter before the last month of the season.
No. 9 Florida? Done. No. 18 Iowa? There will be no Hawkeyes run. No. 6 Texas? Now a fringe contender at best after being on the short end of Saturday's most significant upset, and one of eight ranked teams to lose to unranked teams this past weekend.
No. 6 Texas looks to keep magic going against Oklahoma State
STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — A season that began with disappointment has turned into a possible mission of destiny for No. 6 Texas, with the next challenge coming Saturday night with a game at Oklahoma State.
Surprising Texas, Murray among Big 12′s midpoint best
There is a Big 12 surprise deep in the heart of Texas.
Since the Longhorns lost their season opener to Maryland for the second year in a row, coach Tom Herman's team has a six-game winning streak and is ranked in the top 10 after September for the first time since 2009 — when they were the national runner-up after winning their last Big 12 title.
Big receivers making the big plays for No. 9 Texas
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Facing third-and-long, Lil'Jordan Humphrey caught a quick pass on a play designed to get Texas a few yards.
Then came a load of Longhorns teammates. Next came the surge.
With his legs churning and Texas pushing, Humphrey and the Longhorns moved the pile another 10 yards. The play picked up 19 yards, Texas converted on 4th-and-2 and finished the drive with a touchdown that would prove critical in a 48-45 win over Oklahoma.
At 5-1, No. 9 Texas going all in on Tom Herman
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Game by game, win by win, Texas is going all in on Tom Herman.
AP Top 25 Takeaways: Texas tops Big 12; SEC East revival
Texas has been losing the type of game it won on Saturday for nearly a decade.
The Longhorns since 2009 had mastered the excruciatingly painful loss as they tried to find their way back (that word!) to being nationally relevant and a legitimate contender in the Big 12.
No need to even discuss whether Texas is back after a classic Red River Showdown .
Talk of Texas: Are Longhorns back after big win over OU?
DALLAS (AP) — There was a long pause by coach Tom Herman while considering the obvious questions after Texas extended its winning streak to five games with an impressive victory over three-time defending Big 12 champion Oklahoma in the Red River rivalry.
Are the Longhorns, now a top-10 team again, really back? Ready to be a Big 12 powerhouse again? A playoff contender?
Oklahoma and Texas both ranked adds to prefect fair setting
DALLAS (AP) — It's a perfect setting: Oklahoma and Texas in the middle of the State Fair of Texas on an early fall Saturday with their passionate fans clad in crimson and burnt orange, split 50-50 in the historic Cotton Bowl Stadium.
It's nice that the game carries some national prominence, too.
Texas hold off Kansas State 19-14 to snap road skid
MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Texas coach Tom Herman talked with one of his predecessors, Mack Brown, just as he does every week, and the old Longhorns coach warned him about playing Kansas State in Manhattan.
They're a different team on the road, Brown said. They play with more energy, channeling the will of the crowd, and the team that was trounced by West Virginia last week wouldn't show up Saturday.
"It was very much the way we told our players it would be," Herman said.
Texas assistant Tim Beck hospitalized with infection
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tim Beck has been hospitalized to treat an infection and will miss the No. 18 Longhorns' game Saturday at Kansas State.
Head athletic trainer Anthony Pass said Friday that Beck should return to the team Sunday. No further details were provided. The Longhorns (3-1, 1-0 Big 12) have lost their last five games in Manhattan, Kansas, and haven't won there since 2002.
Time for No. 18 Texas to try to win on the road vs K-State
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The Texas Longhorns have won two big games in front of raucous home crowds not seen at Royal-Memorial Stadium in years.
With postgame chants of "Texas Fight!" and the strains of "Eyes of Texas" still echoing in their ears, the Longhorns returned to the Top 25 at No. 18.
Now they have to go do it on the road and the first stop is a daunting one. Texas (3-1, 1-0 Big 12) plays Saturday at Kansas State (2-2, 0-1), where the Longhorns are 0-5 since their last win there in 2002.
Texas looking to end run of TCU domination in Big 12 rivalry
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas cornerback Kris Boyd said perhaps the last thing Longhorns fans want to hear right now.
"I ain't gonna lie," Boyd said after Texas crushed then-No. 22 USC last week. "I kinda feel like we proved that we're back."
It's time to test that bravado Saturday against No. 17 TCU.
Herman put trust in Texas defense on big goal-line stand
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas coach Tom Herman had a tough choice to make.
Trailing Southern California 14-13, he could leave the Trojans on the Longhorns' 1-yard line or push them back 5 yards because of a penalty, which would give them an extra down at a pivotal moment in the game.
In his ear was defensive coordinator Todd Orlando, pleading with him to trust his defense to keep the Trojans out of the end zone.
"Coach, we got this. We got this. We'll stop 'em," Orlando told Herman.
Ehlinger’s 2 TD passes lead Texas over No. 22 USC 37-14
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The cheers of "Texas Fight!" had likely never sounded louder, and the postgame singing of the "Eyes of Texas" had never sounded sweeter.
At least not for Texas coach Tom Herman and this group of Longhorns.
Texas gave Herman his biggest win in burnt orange and got one of the program's biggest victories in years Saturday night, a 37-14 romp over No. 22 Southern California that saw Texas rally early, dominate late and smother the Trojans after the first quarter.
No. 22 USC and Texas both need win to keep season on course
No. 22 USC (1-1) at Texas (1-1), 8 p.m. ET (Fox).
Line: Texas by 3½.
Series record: USC leads 5-1.
WHAT'S AT STAKE?
A game once billed as a blockbuster is now more about survival. Both teams need a big win to launch their season and keep the fans from pushing the panic button early in the schedule. A road win at Texas would be big boost for Trojans freshman QB J.T. Daniels. Second-year Texas coach Tom Herman needs a victory to keep impatient Longhorns fans off his back.
Ehlinger leads Texas to grinding win over Tulsa 28-21
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Their lead and momentum nearly gone, Texas turned to the arm and legs of sophomore quarterback Sam Ehlinger to avoid a potentially crushing home loss.

Humbled and unranked again, Texas takes on Tulsa
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Humbled again and dropped back out of the Top 25, Texas will try to regroup against Tulsa on Saturday.
If Tom Herman's rebuilding project wants to be taken seriously, the Longhorns can't afford yet another in a game they'll be heavily favored to win.
"We told the guys that this one game will not define us," Herman said of Texas' season-opening loss at Maryland. "Week one will never define anybody."

No. 23 Texas seeks revenge against Maryland team on mend
LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — A year ago, Texas didn't really know what to expect before playing its first game under coach Tom Herman.
"There was an incredible amount of instability when we got here," Herman recalled. "You're talking about three head coaches in four years, four athletic directors in 4 ½ years and two presidents."
In their debut under Herman, the Longhorns were upset by Maryland 51-41. Texas came in ranked No. 23 and never got back in the Top 25.
Herman says he’ll talk to NCAA if asked about strip club
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas football coach Tom Herman said Thursday he's willing to talk to the NCAA about a 2014 visit to a Florida strip club with Zach Smith when both were Ohio State assistants.

Texas looking for more in Year 2 of Tom Herman’s rebuild
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The frustration at Texas is visible in — of all places — the flowing golden curls of senior defensive end Breckyn Hager.
Hager was a freshman when he vowed he wouldn't cut his hair until Texas won the Big 12 Conference. His hair now stretches down to his sternum.
Yep, it's been that long — much longer, really — since Texas mattered in the Big 12.

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Texas has gone from compliant to committed under coach Tom Herman, and is winning again.
When Herman appeared at Big 12 media days for the first time last summer, the Longhorns were coming off three consecutive losing seasons and he had yet to coach a game in Austin.
Texas lined up as Big 12′s top class with defensive adds
Things lined up nicely for coach Tom Herman and the Texas Longhorns to have one of the top signing classes in the nation, not just the best in the Big 12 Conference.
After a winning record on the field in Herman's first season, the Longhorns also made significant strides with his second recruiting class.
Texas hires line coach Hand from Auburn
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas has hired Auburn football assistant Herb Hand as offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator.

Hand spent the last two seasons at Auburn and had previous coaching stops at Tulsa, Penn State, West Virginia and Vanderbilt.

Texas coach Tom Herman’s first season ends as a winner
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Tom Herman's first season at Texas started with a dud that had Longhorns fans fuming, and ended with an on-field shimmy that had them defending him.
Now, Herman looks to turn that shimmy into the full-blown Texas swagger that's been missing for so long.
At 7-6, there are signs it could be coming. At the very least, Herman's first team can be called a winner.
HOUSTON — The day after Texas defeated Missouri in the Texas Bowl at NRG Stadium to finish the season 7-6 — the Longhorns’ first winning record since 2013 — the trending story about the Longhorns wasn’t about their play or their victory.
Instead, a Google or social media search Thursday brought up one thing: Tom Herman’s celebrating by mocking Missouri’s quarterback.
