Jags’ Sparano returns to Minnesota weeks after dad’s death
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Tony Sparano Jr. directed drill after drill Tuesday, clapping his hands and offering positive feedback to players.
He smiled. He laughed. He joked with Jacksonville's offensive linemen during breaks.
His emotions might be totally different the rest of the week.
EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — As the Minnesota Vikings conducted their first full-team practice of training camp, the offensive linemen, once again, found themselves in the spotlight.
EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — The football field was Tony Sparano's element, just like the coaching peers he left behind.
Walking in the freshly cut, bright green grass on Wednesday while directing the Minnesota Vikings through their first practice of training camp was, naturally, the best place for Mike Zimmer to be.
"It takes a little bit of the sting away," Zimmer said, pausing to recover from a crack in his voice, "of losing a great friend, a great coach, a good man."
Vikings offensive line coach Tony Sparano dies at 56
MIAMI (AP) — Tony Sparano once beat Bill Belichick with the single wing, but wasn't as old as that made him sound.
Sparano was only 56 when he died unexpectedly Sunday. The Minnesota Vikings announced his death in a statement that did not provide a cause.
He had been the Vikings' offensive line coach since 2016.
Vikings’ Joe Berger, content with his career, retires: ‘I’m not trying to pretend I’m not going to miss it’
It was 15 years ago this spring that Michigan Tech decided to end its football program, in a move that Joe Berger figured would end his playing career.
His unlikely story — from a program that opted to drop football before reversing course, to nearly a decade spent mostly as a NFL journeyman and ultimately to a starting job with the Vikings — could have continued for one more season.
Vikings coach Mike Zimmer out vs. Cowboys after eye surgery
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — For the first time in his 23-year NFL coaching career, Mike Zimmer wasn't at the stadium with his team.
When the Minnesota Vikings hosted Dallas on Thursday night, Zimmer was at home resting after emergency surgery to repair a detached retina while special teams coordinator Mike Priefer took over as the interim head coach.
Emergency eye surgery makes Zimmer uncertain for Thursday
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer underwent emergency eye surgery Wednesday night, putting his status in question for the team's game against Dallas.
Vikings general manager Rick Spielman said Zimmer was uncertain to recover in time for the matchup Thursday night against the league-leading Cowboys. Spielman said he'd met with coaches and players to put a contingency plan in place in case Zimmer is unable to coach.
Norv Turner resigns as Vikings offensive coordinator
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Norv Turner has resigned. He's been replaced on an interim basis by Pat Shurmur.
The Vikings announced the news on Wednesday, two days after their second consecutive defeat. They've scored only 10 points in each of those games.
It’s funny how one defeat can drastically change perspective.
Prior to last Sunday’s loss at Philadelphia, the football world was bullish on the Vikings. They were undefeated, Sam Bradford was in the MVP conversation and the defense was being compared to the ‘85 Bears and the 2000 Ravens.
And then the offensive line decided not to show up.
1. Who will start on the offensive line?
The wide-open competition along the line figures to be the most heated of the summer. Matt Kalil and Alex Boone are penciled in as starters on the left side. But there is uncertainty at center, right guard and right tackle. John Sullivan, who has returned to the field after two back surgeries in 2015, will try to reclaim the center job from Joe Berger. Brandon Fusco and Mike Harris will compete at right guard. And Andre Smith is the...
Mention Tony Sparano, and the eyes come to mind. More specifically, its the sunglasses. Day or night, inside or out, theyre providing persistent shade while casting the cool yet combustible 54-year-old as a perfect big-screen wise guy to protect Michael Corleones blind side.
So, at the risk of being strangled with a piano wire, we ask, Hey, Tony, whats up with the sunglasses?
Its a great story, says the new Vikings offensive line coach, whose eyes are being...
