Man sentenced to prison for making machine guns
TORRINGTON, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut man has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for making machine guns and selling them to felons.
Sean Dey, of Torrington, was sentenced Wednesday after he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to engage unlawfully in the business of selling firearms and unlawful possession and transfer of a machine gun.
Prosecutors say the 40-year-old man manufactured AK-47-style and AR-style guns, suppressors and other firearms.
Winter festival to feature ice fishing, ice sculpting
TORRINGTON, Conn. (AP) — Ice fishing, ice sculpting and winter hikes for the public are planned during Connecticut's annual No Child Left Inside Winter Festival.
The free festivities are scheduled for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Burr Pond State Park in Torrington.
The No Child Left Inside program is aimed at getting children outside to learn about nature, environmental conservation and preservation.

Man charged in 2015 police shootout agrees to plea deal
TORRINGTON, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut man charged with shooting at police during a 14-hour standoff four years ago has agreed to plead no contest in an agreement with prosecutors.
Timothy Ventry pleaded no contest Tuesday to attempted first-degree assault with a firearm.
The Republican-American reports in exchange the 64-year-old Torrington man is expected to be sentenced to 15 years, suspended after four years behind bars and three years of probation when he returns for a hearing on April 18.
Students leave out hats, scarves for the homeless and needy
TORRINGTON, Conn. (AP) — Students at a Connecticut school are leaving out bright yellow scarves and hats for people experiencing homelessness and those who are in need.
Ainsley Todd, a 12-year-old student at Torrington's St. Peter/St. Francis School, says students also wrote a small message for the people who need the winter clothing during the cold upcoming weekend.
Wyoming inmate, 24, dies of apparent suicide
TORRINGTON, Wyo. (AP) — Authorities say a 24-year-old Wyoming inmate died of an apparent suicide.
The Wyoming Department of Corrections says John Manuel Garcia, an inmate at a medium correctional facility in Torrington, died after paramedics took him to a hospital early Wednesday. Investigators have not said how he killed himself.
Garcia was sentenced in Carbon County on Sept. 24 to three to five years in prison for property destruction, a felony.
Second person dies after Torrington house fire
TORRINGTON, Conn. (AP) — A man who was rescued from a house fire in Connecticut has died just days after his wife.
Fire officials say 65-year-old John Needham died at a hospital burn unit Wednesday, five days after his 68-year-old wife, Donna Needham, died.
Fire crews were called to the Needhams' home in Torrington Jan. 3 after receiving a report of two people possibly trapped in a burning building.
Man pleads guilty to sexually abusing 2 young girls
TORRINGTON, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut man has pleaded guilty to sexually abusing two young girls and will be sentenced to serve 12 years in prison.
Jose Martinez acknowledged in court Tuesday the state has enough evidence to convict him at trial, pleading guilty under the Alford doctrine to first-degree and second-degree sexual assault.
Officials identify woman who died after house fire
TORRINGTON, Conn. (AP) — Police have identified a woman who died after being rescued from a house fire in Torrington, Connecticut.
Fire officials say 68-year-old Donna Needham died Friday from injuries suffered in the Thursday fire at the home she shared with her 65-year-old husband, John.
John Needham remains hospitalized in critical condition.
State gives $3.6M to municipalities to redevelop brownfields
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The state is awarding a combined $3.6 million to eight cities and towns to assess, remediate and revitalize blighted properties.
Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said Wednesday the redevelopment of brownfields presents a huge economic potential, with once contaminated former industrial land and buildings being repurposed to meet the needs of today's businesses and communities. These new projects encompass 59 acres of redevelopment.

Police and officers from the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection responded when a bag of white powder was found Tuesday at Torrington High School. Students were told to hold in place while officials worked to identify the substance, which was later identified as corn starch.

2 motorcyclists killed in separate weekend crashes
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut police are investigating two fatal motorcycle accidents over the weekend.
Authorities say 19-year-old Jacob Gasper was killed in a crash in Torrington late Saturday morning.
Police say they were called to the scene around 11:45 a.m. and found the motorcycle had gone off the road and into a wooded area. Gasper was found nearby.
