Mattel and Warner Bros. Pictures announced Tuesday that Robbie will star as the iconic doll in the franchise's first-ever live-action film. The 28-year-old "I, Tonya" actress will also co-produce the film under her LuckyChap Entertainment banner.
The Barbie film is the first announced deal to come out of toymaker's newly-established Mattel Films. The Barbie doll debuted at a New York toy fair in 1959.

NEW YORK (AP) — The trappings of success continue to arrive for K-pop sensation BTS, the latest a contract with the toy company Mattel which secured rights to produce dolls of the boy band.
And Mattel is not beyond riding those K-pop coattails. Shares of Mattel Inc. spiked almost 9 percent Monday, a day after the toymaker announced a global licensing agreement that also includes collectible figures and games.

Chicago man, twin boys give toys to Swedish Covenant kids
CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago man who was hospitalized as a 5-year-old with leukemia has been collecting toys for kids in the emergency department of Swedish Covenant Health.
Darin Ortmann hastily organized a toy drive five years ago and collected 101 toys. But the collection has grown with the help of the twin 8-year-old boys to whom he serves as a nanny.
Ortmann is manager at a local pub called Loafers. This year he collected 777 toys with the help of customers, neighbors and friends.
Betis fans shower pitch with stuffed toys for charity
SEVILLE, Spain (AP) — It was raining stuffed toys at the stadium of Spanish club Real Betis on Saturday.
Many of the 49,000 spectators tossed stuffed toys onto the pitch at Benito Villamarin Stadium duing halftime of the match against Eibar in an initiative by the club to collect toys for needy children for the winter holidays.
The result was a colorful cascade of furry animals falling from the stands, and volunteers scrambling to collect them all before the second half.

HIALEAH, Fla. (AP) — When Toys R Us closed, Toys for Tots felt the loss.
The toy giant's decision to close its stores this year left some huge holes for the annual charity drive to fill.
Toys R Us shoppers donated more than 250,000 toys last year and the company gave $5 million in corporate contributions — 40 percent of all corporate giving to the Marine Corps community effort.
Pistons’ owner partners with Toys for Tots for holiday event
DETROIT (AP) — Pistons owner Tom Gores is working with Toys for Tots to supply toys to families at Christmas.
Toys for Tots says approximately 10,000 toys, bicycles and helmets will be distributed to families in Detroit, Flint, Saginaw, Bay City and surrounding area, thanks to a contribution from Gores. His family paid for an event Thursday at Detroit's Eastern Market, where families had a chance to pick toys.

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (AP) — A Virginia man who tried to hold up a fast food fish restaurant on New Year's Eve with a toy gun is set to spend a year in prison.
The Roanoke Times reports that Gary Ray Bishop pleaded guilty to attempted robbery last week and was sentenced to a 10-year prison term that will be suspended after a year.

Omaha police, fire departments helping Toys for Tots program
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The city of Omaha and its fire and police departments are teaming up with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program to help make the holiday season memorable for less-fortunate children.

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — The New Hampshire State Police are starting their annual Toys for Tots Campaign.

Judge to hear arguments in police sex toy harassment case
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A judge is scheduled to hear arguments in a case involving a police department, a sex toy and harassment claims.
Several members of the Mountainside police department claim superiors used the toy to harass them and subjected them to homophobic and racial slurs, according to a lawsuit filed in May.
The lawsuit stated Police Detective Sgt. Andrew Huber would "wave around" a sex toy and throw it at people walking past the detective bureau.
Toys for Tots, holiday food help signup set for Cedar Rapids
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — The Salvation Army in Cedar Rapids is gearing up to help the less fortunate this coming holiday season.

Police say adult, not child shot man while playing with gun
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Authorities say a man who thought he and a child were playing with toy guns accidentally shot another man in a Wichita home.
Wichita police initially said a child had fired the gun. But on Tuesday afternoon officer Charlie Davidson said a 24-year-old man accidentally fired a shot that hit another man in the leg.
Patrol: Child in toy car struck and killed by vehicle
HILLSBORO, Ohio (AP) — The State Highway Patrol says a child apparently was riding a toy car in a street when he was struck by a vehicle and killed in Ohio.
The patrol's Wilmington post says its preliminary investigation indicates the boy entered the street and was hit by a vehicle in Hillsboro about 4 p.m. Sunday. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Authorities did not immediately release the child's name and age.
