Pelicans sign Bluiett to 2-way contract
METAIRIE, La. (AP) — The New Orleans Pelicans have signed Trevon Bluiett to a two-way contract after the rookie guard averaged 18.3 points in four NBA Summer League games.
The contract, announced by the club on Tuesday, means Bluiett will spend most of the season in the developmental G League, but can be called up periodically for a total of 45 days.
The 6-foot-5 Bluiett joined the Pelicans' Summer League team after going undrafted out of Xavier of Ohio last month.
CINCINNATI (AP) — Forward Kaiser Gates has decided to forego his senior season at Xavier and enter professional basketball, leaving the Musketeers without five top players from the team that won the Big East regular season title last season.
Gates tweeted his decision Saturday. He averaged 7.2 points and 4.6 rebounds as a junior, when he started 18 games.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Coach Chris Mack lifted the trophy that's topped by a silver basketball and realized he'd underestimated its weight. He started to lose his grip, and Xavier's star player was about to get beaned.
"I almost injured Trevon Bluiett," Mack said. "I held that thing up. I'm not as strong as I look, and it's really top-heavy. I saw the silver ball going toward Bluiett's head.
"Fortunately, my quick cat-like reactions stopped it from happening."

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Xavier guard J.P. Macura was booed by the sellout crowd at Prudential Center before playing No. 19 Seton Hall, booed every time he touched the ball and cheered at almost every mistake.
Not only didn't it bother him, he got the final say.
Macura had a spectacular one-handed dunk on a late rebound to highlight a season-high 27 points, and No. 11 Xavier handed Seton Hall its first loss at home by rallying from a 10-point second-half deficit to beat the Pirates 73-64 on Saturday.

CINCINNATI (AP) — A short bench and pesky foe didn't stop No. 9 Xavier from beating Marshall 81-77 in a non-conference home finale Tuesday night.
The injury-depleted Musketeers led by as many as 23 points before Marshall roared back in the second half, pulling within two possessions with 21 seconds left. C.J. Burks' 3-pointer made it a five-point game.
Kerem Kanter made two free throws to help Xavier prevail. A 3 by Jon Elmore at the buzzer ensured the final margin.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Xavier point guard Edmond Sumner announced on Tuesday that he's entering the NBA draft even though he's still recovering from a significant knee injury.
The sophomore tore his left ACL on Jan. 29 and had surgery. He was still using crutches last week while the Musketeers reached the Elite Eight before losing to Gonzaga.

That was the kind of day it was for the Musketeers, whose memorable March run to the third Elite Eight in school history ended with a lopsided 83-59 loss to No. 1 seed Gonzaga on Saturday in the West Regional final.
SAN JOSE, Calif. – Allen Payne stood in a Cincinnati Wal-Mart, staring at the pink container decorated with green flowers and thought, “This is supposed to hold dead people?”
The Xavier graduate assistant had been dispatched on the errand by head coach Chris Mack, who had a notion that his team needed an urn to house the ashes of a February the Musketeers would happily lay to rest.

The 11th-seeded Musketeers dominated third-seeded Florida State 91-66 during Saturday's second round of the NCAA Tournament. Their second upset in the West Region put them back into the regional semifinal round for the second time in two years and eighth time in program history.

After missing his first seven shots and contributing just 3 points in the first half, Bluiett found his rhythm Thursday night to lead No.11 seed Xavier to a 76-65 upset of sixth-seeded Maryland in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Bluiett shot 6 of 7 during the final 20 minutes to finish with 21 points.
