MONTREAL (AP) — The Carolina Hurricanes allowed more than twice as many shots on goal as they took, but Curtis McElhinney more than made up for it.
McElhinney stopped 48 shots and Carolina beat the Canadiens 2-1 on Tuesday night in Shea Weber's return from injury for Montreal.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Hurricanes and defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk have agreed to a two-year contract worth $4.6 million.
Under terms of the deal announced Thursday, van Riemsdyk will make $2.1 million this season and $2.5 million in 2019-20.
Van Riemsdyk and the team agreed to the deal after the defenseman filed for arbitration. He led the team with a plus-minus rating of plus-9 last season and had a career-best 13 assists.

Hurricanes activate van Riemsdyk from IR after concussion
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Hurricanes have activated defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk from injured reserve.
General manager Ron Francis announced the move about 5½ hours before Thursday night's game at Calgary.
The 26-year-old has missed three games with a concussion suffered in his debut with the team Oct. 7 against Minnesota. He has eight goals and 23 assists in 159 career games.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Hurricanes and defenseman Jaccob Slavin have agreed to a seven-year contract extension.
General manager Ron Francis on Wednesday said the deal begins in 2018-19 and will carry an average annual value of $5.3 million through the 2024-25 season.
Francis says the 23-year-old Slavin is "one of the cornerstones of our team" and "one of the top young defensemen in the NHL today."
Tatar, Howard lead Red Wings past Blackhawks, 4-2.
DETROIT (AP) — Detroit Red Wings fans can wonder all they want about how their season might have turned out differently had Jimmy Howard remained healthy.
The goalie isn't about to play that game.
"You can't think like that," Howard said after making 24 saves in his return to help the Red Wings beat the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday night.
Howard hadn't played in the NHL since injuring a knee Dec. 20.
Tomas Tatar scored twice, and Andreas Athanasiou and Xavier Ouellet added goals for Detroit.
