Tennessee trying to solve its first-quarter frustrations
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee hasn't figured out exactly why it keeps sputtering through slow starts, but the Volunteers believe they can fix the problem.
The Vols have been outscored 69-16 in the first quarter of games this season and hasn't scored a first-quarter touchdown against a single Football Bowl Subdivision opponent. Tennessee (3-4, 1-3 SEC) will try to avoid digging itself another early hole Saturday when the Vols visit South Carolina (3-3, 2-3).
Chandler’s big day helps Tennessee trounce UTEP 24-0
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt's reaction to Ty Chandler's third-quarter breakaway revealed just how much work the Volunteers still must do as they enter Southeastern Conference competition.
Chandler rushed for 158 yards and had an 81-yard touchdown Saturday to spark a Tennessee offense that had struggled with missed opportunities in a 24-0 victory over UTEP.
KNOXVILLE — Ty Chandler came to Tennessee as not only one of the most recruited players in the state, but in the nation.
The middle Tennessee native flashed why on Saturday. Getting his first extensive run as a Vol in place of the suspended John Kelly, Chandler rushed for a career-high 120 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries.
Did the true freshman’s breakout performance earn him more playing time despite Kelly returning to the field this week?
