Pack GM: Performance 1st, but all factors weighed in deals
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — In dealing Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Ty Montgomery, the Green Bay Packers traded away two players who spoke in varying degrees in recent weeks about their respective futures with the team.
What happens on the field always comes first, general manager Brian Gutekunst said Wednesday, though other factors aren't ignored either.
Ex-Packer Montgomery runs to ‘fresh start’ with Ravens
OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Less than 24 hours after being traded to the Baltimore Ravens, Ty Montgomery was having a hard time familiarizing himself with his new surroundings.
"I've never spent any time in Maryland before. We are in Maryland, right?" Montgomery said. "This whole part of the country kind of throws me for a loop. I don't know if I'm in Virginia or what."
FANTASY PLAYS: New key roles for those left after NFL trades
This has been one of the more active NFL trade deadlines for fantasy purposes.
Fans of Houston, Philadelphia, and Baltimore are assuredly excited by their new players, picking up Demaryius Thomas, Golden Tate and Ty Montgomery. However, it's the teams that traded those players that will likely provide the most opportunity for fantasy value.
Packers deal RB Ty Montgomery to Ravens
MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Green Bay Packers have traded running back and kick returner Ty Montgomery to the Baltimore Ravens.
Baltimore was sending a seventh-round draft pick to Green Bay in what was a busy trade deadline day for Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst.
Green Bay also traded starting safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to the Washington Redskins for a 2019 fourth-round draft pick. Clinton-Dix, who can become a free agent after this season, was drafted out of Alabama in the first round in 2014.
Montgomery and Gurley both kept Rodgers on the sideline
Ty Montgomery gets the Bonehead Award for Week 8 for keeping Aaron Rodgers on the sideline.
Todd Gurley gets the Egghead Award for Week 8 for keeping Aaron Rodgers on the sideline.
Ensuring Green Bay's clutch quarterback stayed off the field after Greg Zuerlein hit a 34-yard field goal with 2:05 left allowed the Los Angeles Rams to remain the league's only unbeaten team with a 29-27 win Sunday.
Poor return: Packers, Montgomery look to get past fumble
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Ty Montgomery left Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Sunday after his crucial fumble during a kickoff return without talking to reporters. He had plenty to say on Monday.
The Green Bay Packers running back and kick returner talked more about his uncertain role and anonymous criticism from a teammate than about costing his team a chance to beat the Rams.
Wilson’s big hit sends Rams to 8-0 with 29-27 win over Pack
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ramik Wilson was not the most likely candidate on the Los Angeles Rams' superstar-laden roster to make the decisive play late in the fourth quarter of a tight game with Green Bay.
Yet there went the backup linebacker, flying downfield on kickoff coverage and clobbering Ty Montgomery to force a fumble that he recovered himself.
"It was one of the biggest collisions I've been in," Wilson said. "So we both felt it, and he fumbled."
Rams rally to beat Packers to stay unbeaten
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Greg Zuerlein hit a 34-yard field goal with 2:05 left and Ramik Wilson forced and recovered Ty Montgomery's fumble on the ensuing kickoff return, allowing the Los Angeles Rams to remain unbeaten without a late defensive stand in a 29-27 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.
Jared Goff passed for 295 yards and three touchdowns while the Rams (8-0) were sternly tested by the Packers (3-3-1) and Aaron Rodgers, who threw for 286 yards.
Packers lament key mistakes in latest narrow loss
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ty Montgomery's fourth-quarter fumble on a kickoff return was only the final big blow to the Green Bay Packers' hopes of knocking off the unbeaten Los Angeles Rams.
Montgomery's mistake was far from the only error Sunday that left Green Bay's half of the rowdy Coliseum crowd going home unhappy despite an occasionally inspired effort by their team.
The Latest: Rams halfway to 16-0 after comeback against Pack
The Latest on Week 8 in the NFL on Sunday (all times EDT):
Todd Gurley and the Los Angeles Rams are halfway to 16-0 after a comeback victory over the Green Bay Packers.
The Rams remained unbeaten by overcoming their largest deficit of the season to beat Aaron Rodgers and Co. 29-27 despite trailing by 10 points after the first quarter.
And they did it despite a pro-Packers crowd that loudly supported the visiting team at the Coliseum.
Late fumble keeps Rams unbeaten with 29-27 win over Packers
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Aaron Rodgers can't lead a game-winning drive if he never gets the ball.
That was the whole idea when Los Angeles' Ramik Wilson forced a fumble from Green Bay's Ty Montgomery on a late kickoff return. That was also Todd Gurley's thought moments later when he stopped running with a clear path to the end zone, keeping Rodgers stuck on the sideline in the unbeaten Rams' eighth victory.
FANTASY PLAYS: Stick with expensive RBs in daily this week
This is one week to stick with the top running backs in daily fantasy football.
While there are a few high-end receivers in play, the way to approach this Week 7 slate is to go for the players with the absurdly high floors due to their talent and respective matchups.
These are the top backs to target and the cheap complements who make them work on daily rosters:
Bills safety Hyde listed week to week with groin injury
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — A groin injury leaves Bills safety Micah Hyde's status uncertain for Buffalo's game against Tennessee this weekend.
Coach Sean McDermott listed Hyde as week to week on Monday, a day after the starter was hurt in a 22-0 loss at Green Bay. He was hurt during Ty Montgomery's 43-yard catch in the first quarter.
The injury further depletes the team's depth at the position. Buffalo has just two backup safeties on the roster: 10-year journeyman Rafael Bush and rookie Siran Neal.
Packers keep 3 QBs on first roster, just 2 running backs
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The Green Bay Packers are keeping more quarterbacks than running backs on their season-opening roster.
Undrafted free agent Tim Boyle made the roster as the third quarterback behind starter Aaron Rodgers and backup DeShone Kizer. Green Bay's initial 53-man roster lists just Jamaal Williams and Ty Montgomery at running back.

Depth chart thinning at running back for Packers
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Injuries and unexpected developments have left the Green Bay Packers thin at running back with just two camp practices and two games left in the preseason.
Only Ty Montgomery, who has overcome injury issues in the past, and little-known halfback Joel Bouagnon have made it through camp unscathed.
The Packers were forced to sign Bronson Hill and LeShun Daniels over the weekend to replenish depth.
NFL draft preview: Already deep at running back, Packers have too many needs elsewhere
GREEN BAY — No one can predict what Brian Gutekunst’s modus operandi will be in his first draft as the Green Bay Packers’ general manager.
Packers running back Ty Montgomery must stay healthy to put versatility to use
GREEN BAY — Before the Green Bay Packers worry about where they’re going to line Ty Montgomery up this season, their greater concern is where the wide receiver-turned-running back can’t afford to be: the training room.
Montgomery enters 2018 — the final year of his rookie deal after entering the league as a third-round pick out of Stanford in 2015 — having played in just 29 of a possible 48 games in his three seasons.
CLEVELAND — Way back last season, when the Green Bay Packers also had to run the table to have any chance of making the NFL playoffs, coach Mike McCarthy was forced to reinvent his offense because he was pretty much down to Ty Montgomery, a converted wide receiver, at running back.
So McCarthy called on quarterback Aaron Rodgers to throw the ball. And throw the ball. And throw it some more.
The Green Bay Packers signed former Marshall University wide receiver Michael Clark to their active roster Friday after placing running back Ty Montgomery on injured reserve.
Clark had been a member of Green Bay's practice squad. The 6-foot-7, 217-pound rookie signed with the Packers in may as an undrafted free agent. In the preseason, Clark caught four passes for 37 yards and one touchdown.
Rookie cornerback Cam Sutton, a third-round pick activated from injured reserve earlier in the week, will be active for the Steelers' game against the Green Bay Packers Sunday night at Heinz Field.
Also active is running back Fitzgerald Toussaint, who was promoted from the practice squad Saturday.
Linebacker Clay Matthews out for Packers against Steelers
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Green Bay will be without linebacker Clay Matthews when the Packers try to pull an upset in Pittsburgh against the Steelers.
The Packers made Matthews inactive for their prime-time meeting with the AFC North-leading Steelers. Matthews is dealing with a groin injury. Matthews suffered the injury in the first half of last week's loss to Baltimore.
Packers: Sidelined again, Ty Montgomery keeps the faith while awaiting return
GREEN BAY — Ty Montgomery is very open about his faith — his Twitter timeline is filled with Biblical references — but the Green Bay Packers running back’s prayers lately hadn’t been to get healthy after the latest in myriad injuries this season.
Packers: Rookie running back Devante Mays eager for an opportunity vs. Ravens
GREEN BAY — Ben Sirmans does not want any harm to befall Jamaal Williams on Sunday. Not after the number of injuries he’s seen his Green Bay Packers running backs endure over the past two seasons.
With Green Bay Packers’ season on the line, unlikely trio bails them out
CHICAGO — Meet the new Green Bay Packers.
The key drives in Sunday’s upset win over the Chicago Bears featured a 10-play, 26-yard back-breaker led by lead running back Jamaal Williams, followed by a Brett Hundley gem of a 75-yard march in the fourth quarter.
So … which part of that once-unthinkable sentence shall we attack first?
FANTASY PLAYS: The ripple effects of Aaron Rodgers’ injury
The prime topic of conversation around fantasy football this week is clear: How does the broken collarbone injury for Aaron Rodgers affect the Packers and fantasy football for the rest of this season?
Packers S Morgan Burnett sidelined by hamstring injury
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Packers safety Morgan Burnett will miss Sunday's game against Minnesota with a hamstring injury, and Green Bay might be down another starter in the secondary in cornerback Kevin King.
Burnett was ruled out on Friday, and the Packers listed King as doubtful. The rookie cornerback, who is in the concussion protocol, hasn't practiced yet this week.
Injured RB Ty Montgomery appears close to return for Packers
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Injured Green Bay Packers running back Ty Montgomery has a chance to play Sunday at Minnesota.
Montgomery was listed as full participant for a second straight day Thursday while wearing a flak jacket to protect broken ribs sustained against Chicago on Sept. 28. The practice Thursday was the lone padded workout of the week and a key in determining his availability.
Packers: Aaron Rodgers revels in entire first-team offense practicing together
GREEN BAY — Aaron Rodgers was a little confused at practice Wednesday.
The Green Bay Packers quarterback apparently saw something he hasn’t seen in quite a while — his entire offense back together again.
Tom Oates: Rookie running back Aaron Jones signals he could be game-changer
When the Green Bay Packers selected three running backs in the 2017 draft, it looked like overkill.
Now it’s starting to look brilliant.
After allowing oft-injured and chronically overweight Eddie Lacy to walk in free agency and having only converted wide receiver Ty Montgomery in the running backs room in April, the Packers did some late-round saturation drafting at the position.
Packers WR Adams active after scary hit last week
Green Bay receiver Davante Adams is active against Dallas on Sunday, 10 days after he was taken off the field on a stretcher following a helmet-to-helmet hit that led to a suspension for Chicago linebacker Danny Trevathan.
Packers running back is Ty Montgomery inactive after sustaining broken ribs in the win over the Bears. Left tackle David Bakhtiari (hamstring) is out against the Cowboys, but right tackle Bryan Bulaga (ankle) is active.
Packers RB Ty Montgomery doubtful for Cowboys game
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Green Bay Packers running back Ty Montgomery is listed as doubtful to play against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday because of broken ribs.
Montgomery got hurt in last week's win over the Chicago Bears. He appeared to be wearing a flak jacket under his jersey while practicing on a limited basis this week.
Backup running back Jamaal Williams, who hurt his knee in the Bears game, was dropped from the injury report on Friday and should be available against Dallas.
Packers: Almost all injured players practice, but availability still unclear for Sunday
GREEN BAY — Aaron Rodgers loved seeing Davante Adams going out for passes in practice Wednesday. He was happy to have Bryan Bulaga and David Bakhtiari back as part of his protection crew on Clarke Hinkle Field. And he was pleased to see his top two running backs, Ty Montgomery and Jamaal Williams, in uniform.
Packers: With multiple broken ribs, Ty Montgomery yet to decide on status for Sunday
GREEN BAY — Ty Montgomery isn’t ruling himself out for Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys. But the Green Bay Packers running back is promising he won’t do anything stupid, either — like playing with “multiple” broken ribs if the team’s medical staff advises him against it.
Rib injury will test Packers’ RB Ty Montgomery
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Packers running back Ty Montgomery will prepare this week as if he will play on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys.
His broken ribs might keep him out, though.
On the first play of the Packers' 35-14 victory over the Chicago Bears on Thursday night, Montgomery gained 5 yards before being tackled by linebacker Danny Trevathan. As Montgomery and Trevathan hit the turf, defensive lineman Akiem Hicks fell on Trevathan's knee.
Packers: Rookie running back Aaron Jones quickly impressed Aaron Rodgers
GREEN BAY — Aaron Rodgers liked Aaron Jones right away.
While the Green Bay Packers quarterback usually takes a wait-and-see approach when it comes to talking about rookies — including the three running backs the Packers drafted this spring — he’s always observing, always critiquing, always making mental notes about each of them. Why? Because after 13 years around here, he knows that at some point, his draft-and-develop Packers will need them to contribute.
Packers: Tom Oates says Green Bay makes the grade against Bears
Ty Montgomery was off to a great start with 28 yards on five carries before he had to leave. Aaron Jones ran hard and showed quickness. Aaron Rodgers was under intense pressure but moved around and made plays. Tackles Lane Taylor and Justin McCray broke down at times but didn't allow a total jailbreak.
Packers persevere through more injuries, beat Bears 35-14
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Two more key players hurt. A starting cornerback benched. The Green Bay Packers even had to weather a lightning storm delay.
But they just keep finding ways to win.
Aaron Rodgers threw four short touchdown passes, and the injury-riddled Packers converted three of Bears quarterback Mike Glennon's four turnovers into scores in an eventful 35-14 victory over mistake-prone Chicago on Thursday night.
Packers WR Davante Adams taken off field on stretcher
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Packers receiver Davante Adams was taken off the field on a stretcher with about 4 minutes left in the third quarter against the Chicago Bears on Thursday night after getting hit in the head during a tackle by Danny Trevathan.
The game was delayed for about 5 minutes while medical personnel tended to Adams. He gave a thumbs-up signal as he was wheeled off the field.
PHERSY: Another week, another goose egg in the cash column for us, Nate Dogg. At least I can sleep at night knowing I continue to finish ahead of you on a weekly basis. But that's not helping my bankroll. Once again, one good lineup at least helped me break even for the week. That lineup scored 179 points, which is significantly more than I scored a week ago, yet I made less money. Go figure. Anyway Nate, I have a feeling one of us is taking down some big money this week, so let's get after it.
Now full-time RB, Packers’ Montgomery passed backfield test
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Ty Montgomery's transition to running back appears to be going well.
Yes, the converted receiver was listed as the starting tailback on the Green Bay Packers' depth chart to open the season. He spent the offseason preparing as a running back.
Montgomery passed his first test in his first season opener as a full-timer in the backfield.
Packers: Mike McCarthy seeks quicker start on offense against Falcons
GREEN BAY — Mike McCarthy loved the way his Green Bay Packers offense closed out Sunday’s win over Seattle. Now, the Packers’ coach would like to see it a little earlier.
“The last four series when you go touchdown, touchdown, field goal and you run out the clock,” McCarthy said Monday, one day after the Packers opened their season with a 17-9 victory. “That’s the way you finish a game.”
Packers’ defense looks to build on dominating season opener
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The impressive season-opening victory over Seattle for the Green Bay Packers could have bigger implications in a few months when the NFC powers are jostling for playoff seeding.
They wore down the Seahawks in a style befitting grind-it-out, postseason football.
Three Takes: Seahawks 9-17 loss to Green Bay Packers
Leave it up to a strip sack of Russell Wilson near his own goal line to ultimately snag the Seattle Seahawks.
Sure, Aaron Rodgers and his Green Bay cohorts were able to manufacture a couple nice second-half drives in a 17-9 win, but that offense was mostly neutralized through three quarters by Seattle’s suffocating front seven.
GREEN BAY, Wisconsin (AP) — Green Bay defensive lineman Mike Daniels' strip sack of Russell Wilson deep in Seattle territory in the third quarter set up Ty Montgomery's 6-yard touchdown run on the next play to spark the Packers' 17-9 win on Sunday.
Aaron Rodgers was 28 of 42 for 311 yards and added a 32-yard touchdown pass to Jordy Nelson to make it an eight-point game late in the third quarter.
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Mike Daniels can be a man of few words. The defensive lineman's play on the football field speaks volumes as to how important he has become to the Green Bay Packers.
Daniels' strip-sack of Russell Wilson deep in Seattle territory in the third quarter set up Ty Montgomery's 6-yard touchdown run on the next play to spark the Packers' 17-9 win on Sunday over the Seahawks.
GREEN BAY, Wisconsin (AP) — A marquee season opener between two NFC heavyweights turned into a defensive slugfest.
The Green Bay Packers — not the menacing Seattle Seahawks — landed the momentum-swinging punch.
Green Bay defensive lineman Mike Daniels' strip sack of Russell Wilson deep in Seattle territory in the third quarter set up Ty Montgomery's 6-yard touchdown run on the next play to spark the Packers' 17-9 win on Sunday.
