Utah is looking for its 15th win in its last 16 bowl games dating to the 1999 Las Vegas Bowl. The Utes are 11-1 in bowl games under coach Kyle Whittingham. Whittingham played in the first four Holiday Bowls, for BYU. Northwestern is looking for school-best three-game bowl winning streak.
Pac-12 South champ Utah looks to extend win streak over BYU
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah had to travel a rocky road to finally claim the school's first Pac-12 South title.
The No. 18 Utes navigated a tough conference schedule and survived season-ending injuries to quarterback Tyler Huntley and running back Zack Moss. Still, Utah did not stumble before the finish line in November like in past seasons.
Shelley, Shyne help Utah beat Oregon 32-25
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Jason Shelley may be a freshman and undersized for a major college quarterback, but he doesn't lack confidence.
"We know what we can do. We know we can play. We're here for a reason," Shelley said. "We couldn't wait to prove it."
In his first start, Shelley ran for two touchdowns and Armand Shyne had 174 yards rushing to power Utah past Oregon 32-25 on Saturday.
Utah will debut new starting quarterback against Oregon
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The big question facing Utah when it hosts Oregon is whether Jason Shelley can pick up where Tyler Huntley left off.
Shelley, a redshirt freshman, will make his first career start Saturday against the Ducks in place of Huntley, who broke his collarbone in the third quarter of Utah's 38-20 loss last week to Arizona State.
Utah back Zack Moss suffers season-ending knee injury
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah running back Zack Moss will miss the rest of the season after injuring a knee injury in practice Wednesday.
"So many emotions. So many tears. I'm coming back stronger. God's plan," Moss tweeted Thursday night after learning that his injury would end his season and that he would need surgery.
Oregon visits Utah with implications for the Pac-12 South
Here are some things to watch in the Pac-12 Conference this week:
Wilkins, Harry lead Sun Devils past No. 16 Utah 38-20
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona State's Manny Wilkins, N'Keal Harry and Eno Benjamin shredded the No. 1-ranked defense in the Pac-12 and in the process threw the Pac-12 South race into a free-for-all.
On an awful Saturday afternoon in the desert, No. 16 Utah lost sole possession of first place in the Pac-12 South and, worse yet, lost starting quarterback Tyler Huntley with a broken collarbone.
Utah dominates USC for a 41-28 win
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah has made a living out of punishing other teams with aggressive defense. Now it looks like those opponents have equal reasons to fear the Utes on offense.
Tyler Huntley threw for 341 yards and four touchdowns on 22-of-29 passing to lead Utah to a 41-28 victory over Southern Cal on Saturday night.
Huntley matched a career-high in passing yards to help the Utes beat the Trojans for the third straight time at home. Zack Moss added 136 yards rushing on 25 carries.
Huntley passes, runs, catches for TDs, Utah rolls Arizona
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Tyler Huntley is flashing his familiar gap-toothed smile a lot more often these days.
"Man, that was pretty tight," Huntley said with a wide grin after he threw for two touchdowns, ran for another and caught a 58-yard TD pass, leading Utah past Arizona 42-10 on Friday night.
Utah visits No. 14 Stanford seeking 1st Pac-12 win

No. 10 Washington shuts down Utah in 21-7 victory
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Washington's defense is as strong as advertised once again.
The No. 10 Huskies smothered Utah for the better part of four quarters on the way to a 21-7 victory on Saturday night.
Nothing the Utes did on offense had a real impact as the game progressed, and Washington pounded and bruised Utah.
Three turnovers and a trio of fourth-quarter, fourth-down stops offered proof of Washington's defensive strength.
Interception return for TD helps Utah beat N. Illinois 17-6
DEKALB, Ill. (AP) — Utah's offense remains a work in progress.
The Utes (2-0) were shut out in the first half on Saturday night before rallying in the final two quarters en route to a 17-6 nonconference victory over Northern Illinois (0-2).
Utah QB Tyler Huntley aims to expand his game
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Making more plays with his arm rather than his legs has become a primary goal for Utah quarterback Tyler Huntley as he enters a new season.
Huntley begins his second year as a starter when the Utes host Weber State on Thursday night. He made a name for himself as a sophomore with dual-threat abilities. In 10 starts, Huntley averaged 294.8 yards of total offense. He ranked third overall in the Pac-12 in that category.
Utah poised to make a move in the Pac-12 South
If any team has a path to make a move up in the Pac-12 South, it's Utah.
While the two Los Angeles teams adjust to new quarterbacks, and the Arizona teams (and UCLA) break in new coaches, steady Utah has nine starters back on offense, including quarterback Tyler Huntley and running back Zack Moss. Not to mention continuity at the helm with coach Kyle Whittingham.

Utah QB Huntley continues to search for risk-reward balance
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Tyler Huntley is calling this the hardest stretch of his football life.
Utah has lost five of six games and the quarterback is coming off a three-interception, one-fumble effort in a loss to No. 15 Washington State.
The quarterback isn't solely to blame for the struggles and the sophomore is continuing to grow in first-year offensive coordinator Troy Taylor's new system.
The Pac-12’s 2016 recruiting class of quarterbacks has already provided a major splash at a few schools.
It also resulted in a couple of misses that left teams without much depth at that position.
Huntley throws for 4 TDs, Utah rolls to 48-17 win over UCLA
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah talked all week about getting its swagger back after four consecutive demoralizing losses. The Utes did exactly that, led by a pair of Florida high school teammates in Tyler Huntley and Zack Moss.
Huntley had 327 total yards and four passing touchdowns as Utah defeated short-handed UCLA 48-17 on Friday night.
The Utes (5-4, 2-4 Pac-12) snapped a four-game losing streak and are one win away from becoming bowl eligible.
Oregon snaps 3-game slide with 41-20 victory over Utah
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Oregon senior receiver Charles Nelson told coach Willie Taggart this week that the one thing he always wanted to do was throw a touchdown pass.
Nelson got his wish on Saturday. Oh, and it was his birthday, too.
Nelson got tripped up on a reverse but regained his footing to throw a 22-yard touchdown to Jacob Breeland and Oregon went on to beat Utah 41-20 to snap a three-game losing streak.
Arizona State, Utah meet in Pac-12 South showdown
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah coach Kyle Whittingham has practically been begging his running backs to run more aggressively this season. He finally got it last week.
The Utes' new pass-first offense immediately improved the aerial attack but the running game didn't have the same kind of pop as in the past. Quarterback Tyler Huntley was the team's leading rusher through three games as the new scheme included a lot more called QB runs.
Utah searching for answers at QB after offensive struggles
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah pass offense has reverted to its average ways from previous years since starting quarterback Tyler Huntley went down six quarters ago.
The regression now has coach Kyle Whittingham considering other options, including No. 3 quarterback Cooper Bateman.
Williams likely to start at QB for No. 20 Utah vs. Stanford
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — All signs point to Troy Williams starting at quarterback when No. 20 Utah hosts Stanford on Saturday, though coach Kyle Whittingham isn't tipping his hand.
Sophomore starter Tyler Huntley was injured in the second quarter of a 30-24 victory over Arizona on Sept. 22. He was taken to the locker room and later returned to the sideline with his throwing arm in a sling. Utah typically does not disclose injuries unless they end a player's season.
Utah QB Huntley injured, senior backup Williams stayed ready
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — It's not clear when Utah will get starting quarterback Tyler Huntley back, but the Utes have a more than capable backup.
Huntley left the field in the second quarter of last Friday's 30-24 win over Arizona and later returned with his right arm in a sling. Coach Kyle Whittingham said no season-ending injuries were suffered in the game but declined to provide more details. Utah typically does not disclose injuries unless they end a player's season.
Notes, quotes and stats from the Arizona Wildcats’ 30-24 loss to No. 23 Utah

No. 23 Utah recovers late fumble to hold off Arizona
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — When Utah quarterback Tyler Huntley went down with a shoulder injury in the second quarter, the Utes had an experienced and reliable alternative ready.
Troy Williams, a senior who started 13 games last season, came on and guided the No. 23 Utes to a 30-24 victory over Arizona on Friday night in the Pac-12 opener for both schools.
Here are three things to watch in the Arizona Wildcats’ game vs. Utah at Arizona Stadium (Friday, 7:30 p.m., FS1), plus a score prediction and some pertinent preview links:
No. 23 Utes head to Arizona to open Pac-12 season
Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez loves a good running quarterback and he has one in Brandon Dawkins.
Unfortunately for the Wildcats, they will face one who might be at least as good when they take on No. 23 Utah in their Pac-12 opener Friday night in Tucson, Arizona.
The once-methodical Utes (3-0) have revved up their offense this season behind quarterback Tyler Huntley, and so far so good, with victories over North Dakota, BYU and San Jose State.
No. 23 Utah faces first big test at Arizona
No. 23 Utah (3-0, 0-0 Pac-12) at Arizona (2-1, 0-0), Friday, 10:30 p.m. ET (FS1)
Line: Arizona by 3 ½.
Series record: Utah leads 21-19-2.
WHAT'S AT STAKE
In the Pac-12 opener for both teams, Utah faces its first big test after beating three teams it was supposed to beat, sandwiching blowout wins over North Dakota and San Jose State with a close victory over BYU. Arizona hopes to build upon its blowout victory over UTEP last week after losing to Houston.
Huntley’s 4 TD passes carry Utah past San Jose State 54-16
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Darren Carrington admitted it was premature but he said Utah sophomore quarterback Tyler Huntley reminds him of his former Oregon teammate Marcus Mariota.
"He reminds me of a quarterback I had in the past, a young version of him. I think, when it's all said and done, he's going to be one of the greats," Carrington said.
Utah offense looks to keep growing against San Jose State
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Quarterback Tyler Huntley and receiver Darren Carrington have flourished in Utah's new spread offense, but the scheme has room for improvement before Pac-12 play begins at Arizona on Sept. 22.
The Utes will have a chance to tinker against San Jose State, which ranks 114th in scoring defense in the nation.
Tyler Huntley shines but Utah looking for more from offense
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah quarterback Tyler Huntley put on a one-man show in a six-point win over rival BYU but there are some long-term concerns about the inherent risks when he keeps the ball and the overall status of the running game.
Huntley totals 389 yards, Utah beats rival BYU 19-13
PROVO, Utah (AP) — Utah players danced in the corner of BYU's stadium Saturday night as red-and-white clad fans shouted, "Seven! Seven! Seven!"
Utah quarterback Tyler Huntley combined for 389 total yards and a touchdown as the Utes beat rival BYU 19-13.
The victory was the seventh straight in the series for Utah (2-0) and 16th in the last 19. The last time Utah won seven in a row in the matchup was from 1951-57.
Huntley, Utah offense focused on faster start vs BYU
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — There was a moment of terror for Utah fans Saturday as their worst fears came to life. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Huntley, making his first start, threw an interception to end the first drive of the game on Utah's own 24-yard line.
Huntley leads Utah to 37-16 win over North Dakota
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Zack Moss has seen this before.
The sophomore running back started in the Utah backfield alongside sophomore quarterback Tyler Huntley, his Hallandale (Fla.) high school teammate, and the pair shined in the Utes' season opener on Thursday night.
Huntley threw for 227 yards, rushed for 70 and accounted for three touchdowns as the Utes overwhelmed FCS North Dakota 37-16.
Growth, consistency help Utah’s Huntley earn starting QB job
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Tyler Huntley was a bit of a wild man on the field as a freshman quarterback for Utah. The elite athleticism was there, but he wasn't really running the offense.
Utes coaches say that's the biggest difference for the now-sophomore, who was named the 2017 starter over a returning two-time captain in senior Troy Williams.
Sophomore Tyler Huntley named Utah starting quarterback
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Sophomore Tyler Huntley will be Utah's starting quarterback after beating out returning starter Troy Williams.
The decision to start Huntley was a bit of a surprise since Williams, a senior, started all 13 games last season and was voted an offensive captain last week. Williams threw for 2,757 yards and 15 touchdowns with eight interceptions last season.
Utah football notes: As lone backup QB on scholarship, Tyler Huntley ready for anything
The competition was fierce at times, freshman Tyler Huntley admits, but he never wanted to see Brandon Cox leave.
After Huntley earned a backup job to starter Troy Williams this fall, Cox decided to transfer to Hampton. And Huntley, who was mentored by Cox throughout the offseason, said it was a blow.
“It was like losing a brother,” he said. “I’m going to miss him a lot. He taught me a lot. He took me under his wing.”
Quarterback Tyler Huntley and receiver Tim Patrick stood about 20 yards apart from one another in the hot late-morning sun after a recent Utah practice. Both were tired, huffing and puffing. Both were still padded up, decked in their gear. Both were sweated through, looking as though they had walked in front of a fire hose, having paid the required toll for passage through another day.
Utah football: Sub-par defense in practice showing leads to frustration
Since Signing Day in February, there has been buzz about how the Utes have signed one of their best recruiting classes under Kyle Whittingham.
By Wednesday morning, cornerbacks coach Sharrieff Shah had heard enough of that.
“These kids are highly recruited kids, four and five stars,” he said, his voice rising. “They’ve been heralded as the next-best — well then, show us. Stop climbing in a cave, and let’s go. I’m looking for who is their own self-starter.”
Donavan Thompson made the tough decision this offseason to shear off the dreadlocks he grew for years in Miami.
But now a freshman linebacker at Utah, Thompson, 19, decided that a fresh start deserves a fresh cut.
“Toughest part is mainly the altitude and learning a new system again, and starting from the bottom,” he said. “I’m just trying to do my best to get on the field and do whatever it takes to contribute to the team.”
