Browns QB Taylor practices after concussion, losing job
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Tyrod Taylor's first days as a backup for the Browns have been difficult.
And not just because he lost his job.
Taylor, who was replaced as Cleveland's starter by rookie Baker Mayfield earlier this week, was cleared from concussion protocol and returned to practice Thursday, but was limited by a back injury that could prevent him from being Cleveland's No. 2 quarterback on Sunday in Oakland.
FANTASY PLAYS: Waiver pickups for Week 4 as byes start
With the loss of Jimmy Garoppolo to a season-ending knee injury and the beginning of bye weeks rendering Cam Newton idle, many fantasy players will be looking for quarterback help this week.
If you need a long-term solution at the position, try to make a trade for someone more consistent. Yet there is one possible QB with upside who has the promise to make a real significant impact from the free agency pile.
Pick(ed) 6: Browns name rookie Baker Mayfield starting QB
CLEVELAND (AP) — Baker Mayfield's heard all about the Browns' quarterback misery, the horrid history of failures and flops since 1999.
From Tim Couch to Jeff Garcia to Derek Anderson to Johnny Manziel and so many others, 29 quarterbacks have started in Cleveland before Mayfield, who isn't taking any pride in being No. 30.
Holding Call: Browns delay naming Mayfield new starting QB
CLEVELAND (AP) — The beer-fueled bash spilled into the streets around FirstEnergy Stadium as delirious Browns fans walked — some staggered — while chanting for their new hero, the streak buster.
"Ba-ker May-field," they screamed.
They've named their new starting quarterback. Coach Hue Jackson isn't quite there yet.
Baker Mayfield Era begins as rookie leads Browns past Jets
CLEVELAND (AP) — At some point, Baker Mayfield was going to assume Cleveland's starting job and become the franchise quarterback, the future.
That moment arrived Thursday night.
His days as a backup are over.
Throwing a 14-yard dart to complete his first pass, Mayfield replaced an injured Tyrod Taylor and rallied the Browns from a two-touchdown deficit for a 21-17 win over the New York Jets to end Cleveland's 19-game winless streak — the NFL's second-longest in 48 years.
Won, won and won! Browns beat Jets for first win since 2016
CLEVELAND (AP) — For the first time in 635 days, the Cleveland Browns won.
Baker Mayfield showed them how.
The No. 1 overall pick replaced injured starter Tyrod Taylor and sparked the Browns, who got two 1-yard touchdown runs from Carlos Hyde and beat the New York Jets 21-17 on Thursday night for their first win since Dec. 24, 2016.
"I've just been waiting for my moment," Mayfield said. "I'm just getting started."
Browns rookie Baker Mayfield replaces Taylor in first half
CLEVELAND (AP) — Baker Mayfield's been thrown into the mix for the Browns.
The No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft replaced Tyrod Taylor after Cleveland's starting quarterback sustained a concussion in the first half of Thursday night's game against the New York Jets. Taylor was slow getting up after being sacked for the third time and after being evaluated in the medical tent, was taken to the locker room for treatment.
Jets not taking hungry, still-winless Browns lightly
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Jamal Adams and the Jets are well aware of the struggles going on in Cleveland.
They know the Browns are still looking for their first win since 2016, and New York isn't taking them lightly. If anything, the Jets consider their opponents Thursday night a dangerous, if not desperate, bunch.
"They're definitely out there to get their first win," Adams said Tuesday, "so we've got to come out with our 'A' game."
Steelers LBs Watt, Dupree make a splash after flipping spots
PITTSBURGH (AP) — On the surface, the Pittsburgh Steelers' offseason decision to flip outside linebackers Bud Dupree and T.J. Watt looked a little bit of a reach.
While Watt was steady and occasionally spectacular as a rookie in 2017 for a team that led the NFL in sacks, Dupree has spent much of his first three years in the NFL searching for consistency to justify the first-round pick the Steelers used on him in 2015.
Browns WR Josh Gordon pushes forward after puzzling opener
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Even days later, Josh Gordon's emotions remain jumbled following his first season-opening game since he was a rookie in 2012.
The Browns stopped their 17-game losing streak by tying the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. Gordon still isn't sure how he feels about it.
Ugly tie: Browns coach: Taylor, offense must ‘play better’
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Don't blame Ty for the tie.
Browns coach Hue Jackson defended starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor on Monday as Cleveland's players, coaches and fans digested how a season opener that could have ended with the team's first win since 2016 turned into a painful 21-21 draw against the Pittsburgh Steelers — the NFL's first Week 1 tie in 47 years.
No-win situation: Browns can’t finish in tie with Steelers
CLEVELAND (AP) — When the ball deflected off T.J. Watt's left hand and fluttered to a water-logged landing, well short of the crossbar, there was nothing more the Browns could do.
Their 17-game losing streak was over. Without a win — or a loss. Nothing to celebrate.
Everything goes wrong for Bills in forgettable 2018 debut
BALTIMORE (AP) — One year removed from their first postseason appearance in 17 years, the Buffalo Bills looked nothing like a playoff team in their 2018 debut.
It took exactly one game for the Bills to become embroiled in a quarterback controversy, and it comes after neither of their young QBs played well Sunday in a soggy 47-3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

DETROIT (AP) — Baker Mayfield threw for 138 yards in a dominant first half for Cleveland, and the Browns wrapped up the preseason with a 35-17 victory over the Detroit Lions on Thursday night.
Mayfield completed a 41-yard pass to Devon Cajuste on the first play from scrimmage, and the top overall pick in this year's draft looked sharp throughout his two quarters directing Cleveland's offense.

Browns’ Mayfield ‘very ready’ for preseason start in Detroit
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Baker Mayfield will start for the Browns and then stop — maybe for a while.
The top overall pick — and Cleveland's quarterback of the future — will make his first NFL start and play as much as a half on Thursday night when the Browns visit the Detroit Lions in an exhibition that will feature backups as well as third- and fourth-stringers fighting for precious roster spots before this weekend's cuts.
Browns QB Taylor won’t miss time after dislocating pinky
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Browns escaped a preseason quarterback swap.
Tyrod Taylor isn't expected to miss any time — and is still in line to start the Sept. 9 season opener against Pittsburgh — after dislocating his left pinky and bruising his hand in Thursday's 5-0 win over Philadelphia.
FANTASY PLAYS: Changing fortunes for players on new teams
Changing teams alter a player's value and role in fantasy — the new circumstances change the opportunity for each player and lead to new outlooks on carries, touches and other factors.
As the new season approaches, here is a fantasy look at some players who ended up with new teams this season:
Browns QB Taylor injures left hand, set for more tests
CLEVELAND (AP) — Browns starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor will undergo more tests on a bruised left hand the team hopes isn't seriously injured.
Browns’ Taylor faces Bills; Mayfield-Allen spicy subplots
Cleveland has no quarterback competition. The Browns have made it clear that the starting job is Tyrod Taylor's, but that hasn't quieted the buzz around Baker Mayfield, who had a dazzling preseason debut last week.
The No. 1 overall pick will follow Taylor on Friday night and play up to two quarters against Buffalo in his first game action in front of Cleveland fans hoping he can lead them to a brighter future — just not yet.
Taylor driven by Bills trading QB to Browns
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Tyrod Taylor remembers winning the starting job, throwing touchdown passes and seeing die-hard fans standing in snow at Buffalo's airport on New Year's Eve to celebrate the end of a 17-year playoff drought.
His three years with the Bills were special, filled with long-lasting memories.
Browns ‘sticking’ with plan to start Taylor over Mayfield
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — He's still Baker the backup.
Despite rookie Baker Mayfield's stellar performance in his NFL preseason debut, the Cleveland Browns are not moving the No. 1 overall pick into the starting lineup ahead of Tyrod Taylor.
"National hype," quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese said, downplaying the outside push to elevate Mayfield after one game. "We have our plan, we're sticking to it and when it changes we'll all know."
Mayfield and Barkley show the goods, Browns beat Giants
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — If first indications are accurate, the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants hit it right in taking Baker Mayfield and Saquon Barkley with the top two picks in the NFL draft.
Welcome to the NFL, Baker Mayfield.
And welcome back to the league, Andrew Luck.
While the opening preseason game for most teams carries little intrigue as players from the back end of the roster try to strut their stuff, several story lines will be worth following Thursday night.
Start in the New Jersey Meadowlands and in Seattle.
CLEVELAND (AP) — Baker Mayfield played on a big stage at Oklahoma, so he's not scared of stepping onto football's biggest one.
The Browns rookie quarterback — and perhaps their QB of the future — will make his NFL exhibition debut Thursday night as Cleveland visits the New York Giants in a game that will feature the top two overall picks in this year's draft: Mayfield and Giants running back Saquon Barkley.
Mayfield throws first pick of camp in Browns’ scrimmage
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Baker Mayfield had some typical rookie ups and downs. Tyrod Taylor was his steady self.
Mayfield threw his first interception in training camp while Taylor had a pair of touchdown passes to Jarvis Landry, who made a spectacular, one-handed grab on the second one, as the Browns held their annual intra-squad scrimmage Friday in front of Cleveland fans desperate to see if a team that went 0-16 last season has improved.
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Myles Garrett's rookie season with the Browns was historic — and horrific.
The 0-16 nightmare left him scarred, but determined.
"It drives me a little bit, because I'll never let something like that happen again," the defensive end vowed Thursday as the Browns opened training camp with an infusion of talent and optimism following their forgettable 2017 season. "No matter how long I'm here, there will never be a season like that."
CLEVELAND (AP) — Baker Mayfield's first win was beating the clock.
The No. 1 overall pick in this year's NFL draft signed his rookie contract on Tuesday with the Cleveland Browns, who believe the quarterback from Oklahoma can lead them back to respectability and more.
Mayfield finalized his four-year, $32 million deal a day before Cleveland's players are scheduled to report to training camp and avoided being a holdout. Mayfield's contract includes a $22 million signing bonus.
So (insert name of NFL beat writer) says (fill in name of player) is having a tremendous offseason. This could be the year (repeat name of player) breaks out.
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Baker Mayfield stood 15 yards away from a semicircle of cameras with a member of Cleveland's media relations staff as Browns starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor was peppered with questions.
Mayfield held his ground and waited his turn in line.
For now, this is life for the No. 1 overall draft pick — and the No. 2 QB in Cleveland.
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Baker Mayfield intends to conquer, not divide.
Although drafted by the win-starved Cleveland Browns with the No. 1 overall pick to be their quarterback of the future, Mayfield said Friday he plans to be a leader from the outset even if he doesn't start as a rookie.
Tyrod Taylor is the team's presumptive opening-week starter against Pittsburgh, and while Mayfield intends to compete for the job in training camp, he won't allow personal ambition to get in the way of team goals.
Drafting Mayfield, Dorsey plants his flag: Darcy cartoon
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cleveland Browns drafting Baker Mayfield with the number one pick in the NFL draft should not have surprised anyone.
General Manager John Dorsey telegraphed that he would draft Mayfield when he traded for Tyrod Taylor and traded DeShone Kizer.
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — There's no secret to the Buffalo Bills being in the market for a quarterback.
Even their players will attest to addressing that position being a priority in the days leading up to the NFL draft.
"This is a quarterback-driven league," veteran defensive end Lorenzo Alexander said. "And whether that quarterback is on our roster or it's somebody that we decide we want to move up and get, that's something that you always as an organization want to build around."
NFL Mock Draft 2018: In quarterback-centric class, Pat Shurmur’s Giants could turn everything upside down
Quarterbacks and the teams in desperate need of them will set the drama Thursday night when the first round of the NFL draft is held in Dallas. ¶ Once the Browns make their pick of the Big Four — Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Josh Allen and Baker Mayfield — Pat Shurmur’s Giants are poised to wreck many a mock draft with the second overall pick. ¶ Do they trade the pick to Buffalo or another QB-needy team? Stay put and select the best non-QB on the board? Or take a QB to start grooming behind 37-year-old Eli Manning? ¶ This mock draft projects six QBs to be taken in the first round — two more than any other position.
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Browns continued their quarterback makeover, signing free agent Drew Stanton to a two-year contract.
The veteran is expected to back up Tyrod Taylor, recently acquired in a trade with Buffalo. Cleveland is also expected to draft a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft.
Stanton signed on Friday. He gives the Browns experienced depth and protection in case Taylor gets injured.
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — The McCourty twins are back together.
The Cleveland Browns traded cornerback Jason McCourty to the New England Patriots on Thursday, reuniting him with his brother Devin. The Browns also sent a seventh-round pick to the Patriots to get a sixth-rounder in return.
"Cleveland it's been real!" Jason McCourty wrote on the Twitter account the brothers share. "I wish nothing but the best to the guys in that locker room!"
CLEVELAND (AP) — Call him mobile, dynamic, proven or Buffalo's former quarterback. Don't dare label Tyrod Taylor anything else.
In his first official appearance since coming to Cleveland, Taylor, who ended the Bills' long playoff drought last season, was asked if he could be a one-year stopgap or "bridge" quarterback while the Browns develop a young QB.
Backs on the run: Carlos Hyde is joining the Cleveland Browns; McKinnon to 49ers
The Cleveland Browns' offensive makeover for 2018 — well, save for one small draft detail — might be nearing its completion after former San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde agreed to return to his home state on a three-year deal worth up to $15 million, per Ian Rapoport.
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Bills general manager Brandon Beane wasn't fooling around when saying he had a lot of work to do shortly after Buffalo enjoyed its first playoff appearance in 18 years.
The transformation Beane began during his first season on the job continued into the start of the NFL's free-agency period Wednesday, when Buffalo took the next step in overhauling its quarterback position.
QB AJ McCarron agrees to sign 2-year contract with Bills
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Bills took the first step in restocking their quarterback position by agreeing to a two-year contract with A.J. McCarron.
The 27-year-old spent the past four seasons backing up Andy Dalton in Cincinnati after being selected by the Bengals in the fifth round of the 2014 draft.
